    Abstract Objective: To explore the mechanism of Miao ethnicity medicine formula of Oxalis corniculata against chronic non-bacterial prostatitis. Methods: The rat model of chronic abacterial prostatitis was induced by stimulation with 2% sterile carrageenan solution. After modeling, the rats were randomly divided into two groups, Model control group (Model group) and oxalis group. Another normal control group was set up. The rats in the Model group and the normal control group were given 0.01ml/g normal saline by gavage, and the rats in the oxalis alis group were given 1ml/100g (1 g/kg) of Oxalis corniculata L warm water decoction by gavage once a day for 28 days. Twenty-four hours after the last administration, 10ml blood was collected from the abdominal aorta of the rats, and prostate tissue samples were collected from the rats. hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was used to observe the morphological structure of the prostate in normal and prostatitis rats. ELISA was used to detect the levels of serum and prostate cytokines. The protein expressions of 4-HNE , ALDH2 and FGF2 were detected by Western blot. Results: Compared with the blank group, the model group showed obvious hyperplasia of fibrous tissue in the interstitium of the prostate tissue, disordered glandular structure, papillary hyperplasia of epithelial cells in the acini, infiltration of a small amount of lymphocytes, monocytes and other inflammatory cells in the acini, and increased pathological scores. The protein expressions of 4-HNE , ALDH2 , MCP-1 and FGF2 in prostate tissue were significantly increased. Compared with the model group, the prostate tissue of the oxalis group was slightly damaged, with a small amount of fibrous hyperplasia and inflammatory cell infiltration. The protein expressions of 4-HNE , ALDH2 , MCP-1 and FGF2 were decreased in prostate tissue. Conclusion: Oxalis corniculata L can effectively repair the pathological morphology of prostate tissue in rats with CNP, and its mechanism may be related to activating 4-HNE protein and reducing oxidative stress injury of prostate tissue in rats.

    Abstract Since 1949, the Miao nationality in China has encountered historic opportunities for development. This paper reviews four aspects of the historical achievements of the Miao nationality in China: education, youth organizations, cultural heritage, and new media and women’s empowerment.By analyzing official statistics and autoethnographic data, we demonstrate that the agency of the Miao has contributed to these historical achievements. We argue that the Miao have seized many chances to promote development. Moreover, this paper emphasizes that the Miao have diverse cultures and an imbalance in development in various areas. These diverse features demonstrate that a single criterion cannot be used to measure the complicated situation and we call for further transdisciplinary research.

    Abstract Both diabetes and Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) are seriously harmful to human health, and they are closely related. It is of great significance to find drugs that can simultaneously treat diabetes and COVID-19. Based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine for treating COVID-19, this study first sorted out the compounds of Guizhou Miao medicine with "return to the lung channel" and "clear heat and detoxify" effects in China. The active components against COVID-19 were screened by molecular docking with SARS-CoV-2 PLpro and angiotensin-converting enzyme II as targets. Furthermore, the common target dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) of diabetes and COVID-19 was used as a screening protein, and molecular docking was used to obtain potential components for the treatment of diabetes and COVID-19. Finally, the mechanism of potential ingredients in the treatment of diabetes and COVID-19 was explored with bioinformatics. More than 80 kinds of Miao medicine were obtained, and 584 compounds were obtained. Further, 110 compounds against COVID-19 were screened, and top 6 potential ingredients for the treatment of diabetes and COVID-19 were screened, including 3-O-β-D-Xylopyranosyl-(1-6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl oleanolic acid 28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl ester, Glycyrrhizic acid, Sequoiaflavone, 2-O-Caffeoyl maslinic acid, Pholidotin, and Ambewelamide A. Bioinformatics analysis found that their mechanism of action in treating diabetes and COVID-19 may be related to regulating the expression of DPP4, angiotensin II type 1 receptor, vitamin D receptor, plasminogen, chemokine C-C-motif receptor 6, and interleukin 2. We believe that Guizhou Miao medicine is rich in potential ingredients for the treatment of diabetes and COVID-19.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: A famous traditional oral Chinese medicine formula, Si-Miao-Yong-An decoction, has been used to treat thromboangiitis obliterans from the Qing Dynasty. Because its therapeutic principles including clearing away heat, detoxification, accelerating blood circulation and relieving pains are consistent with acute radiation-induced cutaneous wounds in traditional Chinese medicine, we tried to add herbs and improve them into an external dosage form, called Jia-Wei-Si-Miao-Yong-An Fang (JWSMYA). However, its mechanism on radiation-induced cutaneous wounds is still unknown.
    Aim of the study: This study evaluated the therapeutic effect of JWSMYA and investigated the mechanism of repair and anti-fibrosis on acute radiation-induced cutaneous wounds with JWSMYA.
    Materials and methods: Firstly, we prepared JWSMYA, and determined the composition through UHPLC LC-MS/MS. Then we used ionizing radiation to make a cutaneous wound model of rats, and observed wound healing through their skin injury score, wound contraction percentage and histological staining. In addition, immunohistochemical staining, Western blot analysis, qRT-PCR and Elisa were used to explore wound rehabilitation and anti-fibrosis mechanisms.
    Results: An in vivo assay revealed that JWSMYA promoted the repairment of acute radiation-induced cutaneous wounds, facilitated MAPK/ERK phosphorylation, inhibited PI3K/AKT activation, reduced the level of alpha-smooth muscle actin (a-sma), collagen type-I alpha 2 (Col1a2) and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) in cutaneous tissues. However, no statistical difference was found in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
    Conclusion: JWSMYA accelerated the repair of acute radiation-induced cutaneous wounds, which might be associated with the MAPK/ERK pathway. In addition, PI3K/AKT might be associated with the inhibition of fibrosis and the promotion of high-quality wound healing.

    Abstract Aims: We assessed the efficacy of the traditional Chinese medicine formulation Jia-Wei-Si-Miao-Yong-An decoction (HJ11) in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome and evaluated its impact on the intestinal microbiota and their metabolites.
    Methods: An acute coronary syndrome model was established in rats, which were randomly assigned to the model, HJ11 treatment, and atorvastatin treatment groups. Rats were then administered saline solution (model and sham operation control groups) or drugs by oral gavage for 28 d. Echocardiography was performed and serum creatine kinase-MB and cardiac troponin I levels were monitored to examine the cardiac function. Inflammation was evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin staining of heart tissue, and serum interleukin-2, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein measurements. Gut microbiota composition was analyzed
    Results: HJ11 improved cardiac function and attenuated inflammation in rats with acute coronary syndrome. Relative to the untreated model group, the HJ11-treated group presented normalized Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and reduced abundances of the bacterial genera

    Abstract Background: To investigate the active ingredients and the mechanisms of Si-miaoyong- an Decoction (SMYA) in the treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD) by using network pharmacology, molecular docking technology, and in vitro validation.
    Methods: Through the Chinese Medicine System Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP), Uniprot database, GeneCards database, and DAVID database, we explored the core compounds, core targets and signal pathways of the effective compounds of SMYA in the treatment of CHD. Molecular docking technology was applied to evaluate the interactions between active compounds and key targets. The hypoxia-reoxygenation H9C2 cell model was applied to carry out in vitro verification experiments. A total of 109 active ingredients and 242 potential targets were screened from SMYA. A total of 1491 CHD-related targets were retrieved through the Gene- Cards database and 155 overlapping CHD-related SMYA targets were obtained. PPI network topology analysis indicated that the core targets of SMYA in the treatment of CHD include interleukin- 6 (IL-6), tumor suppressor gene (TP53), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), phosphorylated protein kinase (AKT1) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). KEGG enrichment analysis demonstrated that SMYA could regulate Pathways in cancer, phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) signaling pathway, hypoxiainducible factor-1(HIF-1) signaling pathway, VEGF signaling pathway, etc. Results: Molecular docking showed that quercetin had a significant binding activity with VEGFA and AKT1. In vitro studies verified that quercetin, the major effective component of SMYA, has a protective effect on the cell injury model of cardiomyocytes, partially by up-regulating expressions of phosphorylated AKT1 and VEGFA.
    Conclusion: SMYA has multiple components and treats CHD by acting on multiple targets. Quercetin is one of its key ingredients and may protect against CHD by regulating AKT/VEGFA pathway.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: The Si Miao Formula (SMF), a traditional Chinese medicine, originated from the "Cheng Fang Bian Du" during the Qing Dynasty and is commonly employed for the treatment of gout and hyperuricemia. We have demonstrated the anti-NAFLD effect of SMF by regulating hepatic lipid metabolism in high fat and high sucrose (HFHS) feeding mice in our previous report. However, the material basis of SMF for its anti-NAFLD effect remains unknown.
    Aim of the study: To compare the effeciacy of different components of SMF and identify the material basis for its anti-NAFLD effect.
    Materials and methods: In the present study, a "Leave-one out" strategy was adopted by removing one herb from SMF each time, and the anti-NAFLD effects of four decomposed recipes containing three herbs were evaluated in C57BL/6J mice fed with an HFHS diet for 16 weeks. The chemical components of SMF and the absorbed entities in serum were assayed using UHPLC-Q-Exactive-Orbitrap HRMS. Finally, a new chemical combination with four compounds (berberine, betaine, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, 2:2:1:1) were generated (SMF component composition, SMF_CC), and its anti-NAFLD effect was evaluated by comparing with the original SMF in the mouse model.
    Results: Varified effects on NAFLD mice were observed among the decomposed recipes of SMF, while the original SMF showed advantages over its decomposed recipes. A total of 111 chemicals were identified from SMF, and 21 of them were detected in serum after oral administration of SMF. Comparing to SMF, SMF_CC showed comparable anti-NAFLD effect in HFHS-diet-fed mice, which was associated with the inhibition of hepatic fatty acid synthesis and transport, as well as inflammation.
    Conclusion: Our current results suggested that the original SMF was better than its decomposed recipes in NAFLD management, and the derived SMF_CC was also effective in inhibiting NAFLD formation, highlighting its potential of being a novel natural agent for NAFLD therapy.

    Abstract Headings ethnopharmacological relevance: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease. Er miao San (EMS) has been shown to have good anti-inflammatory effects and is widely used in the clinical treatment of RA. However, the exact mechanism is not completely understood.
    Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to explore that EMS-containing serum affects M1/M2 polarization of macrophages and may be mediated through the microRNA (miRNA)-33/NLRP3 pathway, thereby elucidating the molecular mechanism of EMS treatment of RA.
    Materials and methods: We screened for safe concentrations of EMS-containing serum by using CCK-8 measurement. RAW264.7 cells were cultured with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (100 ng/mL) and interferon-γ (20 ng/mL) for 24 h to induce M1-type macrophages. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) (5 mM) was added in the last 30 min to activate NLRP3. The content of miR-33 was detected by RT‒qPCR after transfection of the miRNA-33 mimic. The protein expression levels of NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) and Arginase-1 (Arg-1) were detected by Western blot. The contents of IL-1β, IL-10, TNF-α, TGF-β and IL-18 in serum and cell supernatant were determined by ELISA. The fluorescence intensity of CD86 and CD206 was detected by immunofluorescence.
    Results: The results showed that EMS-containing serum promoted the protein expression level of Arg-1 and the secretion levels of TGF-β and IL-10, inhibited the levels of iNOS, IL-1β and TNF-α, and regulated the balance of pro-inflammatory factors and anti-inflammatory factors. RT‒qPCR results showed that EMS-containing serum could reduce the level of miRNA-33. EMS-containing serum could reduce the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome-related proteins and downregulate the expression levels of IL-1β and IL-18. These results suggest that EMS exerts its effect on macrophage polarization through the miRNA-33/NLRP3 pathway.
    Conclusion: EMS-containing serum inhibits the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome by downregulating miRNA-33, thus preventing the polarization of M1-type macrophages.

    Abstract As the dominant indigenous minority in southern China, Hmong-Mien-speaking Miao people were thought to be the descendants of Neolithic Yangtze rice farmers. However, the fine-scale population structure and genetic profile of the Miao populations remain unclear due to the limited Miao samples from southern China and Southeast Asia. We genotyped 19 individuals from the two largest Miao tribes in Guizhou Province (Southwest China) via SNP chips and co-analyzed the data with published modern and ancient East Asians. The Guizhou Miao displayed a closer genomic affinity with present-day and Neolithic to Iron Age southern East Asians (SEAs) than with most northern East Asians (NEAs). The genetic substructure within Miao groups was driven by different levels of genetic interaction with other ethnolinguistic groups: Hunan Miao (Central China) harbored higher proportions of NEA-related ancestry; Guizhou Miao (Southwest China) and Vietnam Miao (mainland Southeast Asia) received additional gene flow mainly from surrounding groups with Tai-Kadai-related ancestry. There were also more complex admixture events in the newly studied groups between Guizhou Xijiang Miao and surrounding populations compared with Guizhou Congjiang Miao. The qpAdm model further demonstrated that the primary ancestry of Hunan Miao, Guizhou Miao studied here, and Vietnam Miao derived from ancient SEA-related ancestry (represented by coastal early Neolithic SEA Liangdao2), with the additional gene flow from ancient NEA-related ancestry (represented by spatiotemporally inland Yellow River farmers), with slightly different proportions. Our genomic evidence reveals the complex and distinct demographic history of different Miao tribes.
