Abstract Global climate change affects the soil temperature and moisture in permafrost soils thus influencing active layer freeze-thaw processes. While warming of Arctic permafrost has been well documented, changes in the soil energy content and seasonal freeze-thaw processes have generally received less attention. In this study, we focus on the variability of the active layer freeze-back onset and duration at an Arctic research site on Samoylov Island at the Lena Delta in Northeastern Siberia. Samoylov is underlain by continuous permafrost and characterized by a polygonal tundra landscape. Continuous measurements of soil parameters and meteorological conditions have been conducted at this site since 1998. We analyzed data on soil temperature and moisture from 2012 to 2021 with respect to the polygon’s microtopography. We estimated the timing of freeze-back at different depths in both the elevated rim and water-logged center of the polygon. During the study period, the freeze-back onset was relatively stable with an interannual variability of approximately 10 days. We observed a clear increase in freeze-back duration at all measured depths of both, the polygon rim and center. Close to the surface, the duration increased by more than 200%. Due to differences in soil moisture, freeze-back at the polygon center started approximately one week later and took about 10 days longer than at the rim. The results of our study highlight the importance of changes in freeze-thaw processes in addition to soil temperature trends in gaining a more complete understanding of active layer conditions.

Abstract Accurate seismic hazard assessment requires high quality and complete seismic catalogs. Anthropogenic events such as quarry blasts, rock bursts, explosions can introduce significant errors in statistical analyses, especially in areas with low background seismicity rates such as Mainland France. The BCSF-Renass, a national service of observation in seismology, characterizes the seismicity of the Mainland France, and makes available to the scientific community its seismic catalog. Until 2012, only natural seismicity was localized but since 2012, other types of events are localized and manually discriminated, in particular quarry blasts, marine explosions (demining operation), induced seismicity. These last years have seen a huge increase of new seismological stations installed in the Resif-EPOS framework. The main consequence is the location by the BCSF-Renass of many low magnitude events, most are quarry blasts (around half in 2022). The work of the analysts is considerably impacted, firstly by a huge increase of events to be processed and secondly by the difficulty of determining the events' origins with the issue of catalog contamination. This is why the BCSF-Renass, in early 2022, has developed a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) tool to automatically discriminate earthquakes from quarry blasts. The learning step was done on the 3 components seismogram spectra on the year 2021 events. The performances are more than 99% for precision and recall, and take well into account the different regions and geological contexts of France. Moreover, this discrimination also worked well for marine explosions, and allowed us to highlight landslides or rock falls.

Abstract Introduction: The physician's role in the healthcare delivery system extends beyond patient care to include numerous critical leadership roles in healthcare. In addition to treating patients, physicians manage multidisciplinary teams and influence policies to optimise public health. Yet, leadership education is not currently emphasised as part of undergraduate medical education. The purpose of this pilot study was to survey US allopathic medical schools about their current leadership curricula for medical students, including aspects that promote or inhibit effective curricular implementation.
Methods: A survey was developed and administered to representatives at US allopathic medical schools regarding the presence and nature of leadership curricula for medical students currently in place, as well as barriers to effective implementation.
Results: A total of 41 of 144 medical schools (28%) responded to the survey. Of the schools that responded, 25 schools reported the presence of a leadership curriculum. Primary competencies and goals were similar among these institutions, but the structure of the curriculum and how it is being implemented varied. The study did not identify consistent methods of assessing student leadership competencies. Themes of improved communication and integration within the curriculum emerged as actions promoting successful implementation. Financial restraints and buy-in among stakeholder groups (eg, faculty, staff and students) were mentioned most frequently as barriers to the effective implementation of leadership curricula.
Conclusions: Although leadership education within undergraduate medical education is emphasised by a variety of groups, including the Association of American Medical Colleges, medical schools do not appear to universally address this topic. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the primary accrediting body for medical schools, does not currently require leadership education as a core topic for accreditation. To provide effective education on leadership to medical students, administrative bodies could improve their support for this topic by considering the factors identified that both hinder and promote implementation.

Abstract Postparturient hemoglobinuria is a sporadic disease characterized by intravascular hemolysis and hemoglobinuria in early lactating dairy cows. The condition has empirically been associated with phosphorus (P) deficiency or hypophosphatemia; however, the exact etiology remains obscure. This paper summarizes two controlled studies investigating the effect of P deprivation during the transition period. In Study I, 36 late pregnant dairy cows were randomly assigned to either a diet with low, or adequate, P content from four weeks before calving to four weeks after calving. In Study II, 30 late pregnant dairy cows were again assigned to either a diet with low, or adequate, P for the last four weeks before calving only. Pronounced hypophosphatemia developed during periods of restricted P supply. In early lactation, a subtle decline of the red blood cell count occurred independently of the dietary P supply. In Study I, anemia developed in 11 cows on deficient P supply, which was associated with hemoglobinuria in five cases. Neither erythrocyte total P content nor osmotic resistance of erythrocytes were altered by dietary P deprivation. Restricted dietary P supply, particularly in early lactation, may lead to postparturient hemoglobinuria, but more frequently causes clinically inapparent hemolysis and anemia in cows.

Abstract Restricted dietary P supply to transition dairy cows has recently been reported to beneficially affect the Ca balance of periparturient cows. The objective of the present study was to determine whether this effect on the Ca balance can be reproduced when limiting the P-restricted feeding to the last 4 wk of gestation. A total of 30 dairy cows in late pregnancy were randomly assigned to a dry cow diet with either low or adequate P content (0.16 and 0.30% P in DM, respectively) to be fed in the 4 wk before expected calving. After calving, all cows received the same lactating cow ration with adequate P content (0.46% P in DM). Blood was collected daily from 4 d antepartum until calving, at calving (d 0), 6 and 12 h after calving (d +0.25 and d +0.5, respectively) and on days +1, +2, +3, +4 and +7 relative to calving. Blood gas analyses were conducted to determine the concentration of ionized Ca in whole blood ([Ca

Abstract Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) risk stratification is essential in guiding therapeutic decision. Multiparametric magnetic resonance tomography (mpMRI) holds promise in the prediction of adverse pathologies (AP) after prostatectomy (RP). This study aims to identify clinical and imaging markers in the prediction of adverse pathology.
Methods: Patients with PCa, diagnosed by targeted biopsy after mpMRI and undergoing RP, were included. The predictive accuracy of mpMRI for extraprostatic extension (ECE), seminal vesicle infiltration (SVI), and lymph node positivity was calculated from the final histopathology.
Results: 846 patients were involved. Independent risk parameters include imaging findings such as ECE (OR 3.12), SVI (OR 2.55), and PI-RADS scoring (4: OR 2.01 and 5: OR 4.34). mpMRI parameters such as ECE, SVI, and lymph node metastases showed a high prognostic accuracy (73.28% vs. 95.35% vs. 93.38%) with moderate sensitivity compared to the final histopathology. The ROC analysis of our combined scoring system (D'Amico classification, PSA density, and MRI risk factors) improves the prediction of adverse pathology (AUC: 0.73 vs. 0.69).
Conclusion: Our study supports the use of mpMRI for comprehensive pretreatment risk assessment in PCa. Due to the high accuracy of factors like ECE, SVI, and PI-RADS scoring, utilizing mpMRI data enabled accurate prediction of unfavorable pathology after RP.
