    Abstract Candida albicans (C. albicans) is one of the most common opportunistic fungi worldwide, which is associated with a high mortality rate. Despite treatment, C. albicans remains the leading cause of life-threatening invasive infections. Consequently, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are potential alternatives as antifungal agents with excellent antifungal activity. We previously reported that Css54, found in the venom of Centrurodies suffusus suffusus (C. s. suffusus) showed antibacterial activity against zoonotic bacteria. However, the antifungal activity of Css54 has not yet been elucidated. The objective of this study was to identify the antifungal activity of Css54 against C. albicans and analyze its mechanism. Css54 showed high antifungal activity against C. albicans. Css54 also inhibited biofilm formation in fluconazole-resistant fungi. The antifungal mechanism of action of Css54 was investigated using membrane-related assays, including the membrane depolarization assay and analysis of the membrane integrity of C. albicans after treatment with Css54. Css54 induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in C. albicans, which affected its antifungal activity. Our results indicate that Css54 causes membrane damage in C. albicans, highlighting its value as a potential therapeutic agent against C. albicans infection.

    Abstract Abstract We aimed to examine the association between serum folate levels and hypertension in Korean adults. Our study population was 6343 Korean adults whose blood pressure and folate levels were measured in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016–2018. We aggregated the study populations into quintiles according to serum folate levels (1.5–4.3, 4.4–5.7, 5.8–7.5, 7.6–10.3, and 10.4–35.9 ng/mL). Multivariable logistic and linear regression models were used to analyze the relationships between serum folate levels, blood pressure, and hypertension. The weighted average of serum folate levels was 7.4 ng/mL, and the weighted prevalence of hypertension was 30.4% in the study populations. After adjusting for all potential confounders, compared to those in the lowest quintile of serum folate levels, systolic and diastolic blood pressure of the people in the other quintiles were not significantly different. The linear relationship between serum folate levels and blood pressure was not statistically significant. The odds for hypertension were not significantly different across the quintiles of serum folate levels. This study showed high serum folate levels was not significantly associated with lowering hypertension in Korean adults.

    Abstract The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae strains causes severe problems in the treatment of bacterial infections owing to limited treatment options. Especially, carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is rapidly spreading worldwide and is emerging as a new cause of drug-resistant healthcare-associated infections. CRKP also has been announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the most pressing antibiotic resistance threats. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are drawing considerable attention as ideal antibiotic alternative candidates to combat MDR bacterial infections. In a previous study, Osmin is composed of 17 amino acids and is isolated from solitary bee (Osmia rufa) venom. Herein, we evaluated the potential of Osmin to be used against drug-resistant K. pneumoniae as an alternative to conventional antibiotics. Osmin exhibited significant antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity and lower toxicity than melittin, a well-known bee venom peptide. Additionally, we confirmed that it possesses a bactericidal mechanism that rapidly destroys bacterial membranes. Osmin was relatively more stable than melittin under the influence of various environmental factors and unlike conventional antibiotics, it exhibited a low bacterial resistance risk. During in vivo tests, Osmin reduced bacterial growth and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and fibrosis-related genes in mice with CRKP-induced sepsis. Overall, our results indicate a high potential for Osmin to be used as a valuable therapeutic agent against drug-resistant K. pneumoniae infections.

    Abstract Periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are inflammatory diseases that share many similarities. We aimed to investigate the associations of periodontitis and oral hygiene status and behaviors with RA in a nationwide general population cohort. Participants from the National Health Screening cohort database of Korea who underwent oral health screening by dentists between 2003 and 2004 were included. The occurrence of RA was analyzed according to the presence of periodontitis, oral health examination findings, and behaviors. Overall, 2,239,586 participants were included. During a median of 16.7 years, RA occurred in 27,029 (1.2%) participants. The risk for incident RA was higher when participants had periodontitis (hazard ratio (HR) 1.2, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.08-1.24) and an increased number of missing teeth (HR 1.5, 95% CI, 1.38-1.69). In contrast, better oral hygiene behaviors, such as a higher frequency of daily tooth brushing (HR 0.76, 95% CI 0.73-0.79,

    Abstract Factors affecting rainwater resource management for the present and future include population growth, urbanization, and climate change. Rainwater harvesting (RWH) allows multiple urban water-related issues to be mitigated. In this study, a spreadsheet-based daily water balance model was developed to analyze the existing laws and regulations regarding the storage tank size of RWH facilities. Six buildings at different locations were selected for this study. Two are office buildings, two are school buildings, and two are sports buildings. The term “RWH facility evaluation criteria” is collectively used for rainwater supply satisfaction rate, rainwater guarantee rate, and rainwater utilization rate. A green roof can hold the rainwater for some time, reducing the peak flow and runoff volume. The results provide evidence that, among the selected studied buildings, buildings having a combination of a green roof and RWH facility score the highest in terms of RWH facility evaluation criteria, even though the actual tank size is much smaller than the standard tank size. This is the case with the Yesan County Office, in which a green roof connected to a small (66 m 3 ) rainwater storage tank is installed. As a green roof can decrease the runoff volume, the rainwater can be managed efficiently with less pumping energy and only a small storage tank.

    Abstract Abstract Recently, weather data have been applied to one of deep learning techniques known as “long short-term memory (LSTM)” to predict streamflow in rainfall-runoff relationships. However, this approach may not be suitable for regions with artificial water management structures such as dams and weirs. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the prediction accuracy of LSTM for streamflow depending on the availability of dam/weir operational data across South Korea. Four scenarios were prepared for 25 streamflow stations. Scenarios #1 and #2 used weather data and weather and dam/weir operational data, respectively, with the same LSTM model conditions for all stations. Scenarios #3 and #4 used weather data and weather and dam/weir operational data, respectively, with the different LSTM models for individual stations. The Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and the root mean squared error (RMSE) were adopted to assess the LSTM’s performance. The results indicated that the mean values of NSE and RMSE were 0.277 and 292.6 (Scenario #1), 0.482 and 214.3 (Scenario #2), 0.410 and 260.7 (Scenario #3), and 0.592 and 181.1 (Scenario #4), respectively. Overall, the model performance was improved by the addition of dam/weir operational data, with an increase in NSE values of 0.182–0.206 and a decrease in RMSE values of 78.2–79.6. Surprisingly, the degree of performance improvement varied according to the operational characteristics of the dam/weir, and the performance tended to increase when the dam/weir with high frequency and great amount of water discharge was included. Our findings showed that the overall LSTM prediction of streamflow was improved by the inclusion of dam/weir operational data. When using dam/weir operational data to predict streamflow using LSTM, understanding of their operational characteristics is important to obtain reliable streamflow predictions.
