Abstract Background: Radiolucencies found at the root apex in patients with cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) may be mistaken for periapical cysts (PC) of endodontic origin. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of quantitative texture analysis using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to differentiate between COD and PC.
Methods: Patients who underwent CBCT at Wonkwang University Daejeon Dental Hospital between January 2019 and December 2022 and were diagnosed with COD and PC by clinical, radiologic, and, if necessary, histopathologic examination were included. Twenty-five patients each were retrospectively enrolled in the COD and PC group. All lesions observed on axial CBCT images were manually segmented using the open-access software MaZda version 4.6 to establish the regions of interest, which were then subjected to texture analysis. Among the 279 texture features obtained, 10 texture features with the highest Fisher coefficients were selected. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U-test, Welch's t-test, or Student's t-test. Texture features that showed significant differences were subjected to receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis to evaluate the differential diagnostic ability of COD and PC.
Results: The COD group consisted of 22 men and 3 women, while the PC group consisted of 14 men and 11 women, showing a significant difference between the two groups in terms of sex (p=0.003). The 10 selected texture features belonged to the gray level co-occurrence matrix and included the sum of average, sum of entropy, entropy, and difference of entropy. All 10 selected texture features showed statistically significant differences (p<0.05) when comparing patients with COD (n=25) versus those with PC (n=25), osteolytic-stage COD (n=11) versus PC (n=25), and osteolytic-stage COD (n=11) versus cementoblastic-stage COD (n=14). ROC curve analysis to determine the ability to differentiate between COD and PC showed a high area under the curve ranging from 0.96 to 0.98.
Conclusion: Texture analysis of CBCT images has shown good diagnostic value in the differential diagnosis of COD and PC, which can help prevent unnecessary endodontic treatment, invasive biopsy, or surgical intervention associated with increased risk of infection.

Abstract Objectives: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a heterogeneous group of tumors that arise at various sites throughout the body. The gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) tract is the most common site of NETs. We investigated the clinicopathologic features of patients with GEP-NETs and the utility of digital image analysis, which was compared to eyeball estimation, a conventional method used to determine the Ki-67 labeling index.
Methods: The clinicopathologic data of GEP-NET patients at Gangnam Severance Hospital from January 2008 to October 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Each case was reclassified according to the 2019 World Health Organization classification system, to which the classification of grade 3 was added. Comparisons between eyeball estimation and the digital image analysis method for Ki-67 index assessment were performed by calculating Cohen's kappa (k) coefficient.
Results: In total, 345 patients with GEP-NETs were enrolled. The mean age was 49.3 (range 13-79) years, with more male (61.1%) than female patients. The primary tumor sites were the rectum (70.1%), pancreas (12.5%), stomach (6.7%), and duodenum (5.8%). Overall, 298 (86.4%), 35 (10.1%), 2 (0.6%), and 10 (2.9%) patients exhibited grade 1, 2, and 3 and neuroendocrine carcinoma, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed that age > 50 years, tumor size > 2 cm, and presence of lymphovascular invasion, nodal metastasis, and distant metastasis were significantly associated with short overall survival. Additionally, 283 patients underwent digital image analysis of the Ki-67 index, and substantial agreement was found between the two methods (κ value: 0.765).
Conclusions: Eyeball estimation revealed non-inferior results compared with digital image analysis. Further research is needed to evaluate the possibility of using digital image analysis as an alternative analysis method.

Abstract This study investigated the IGF-1 signal in specific tissues using Pacific oysters artificially matured via water temperature elevation. Pacific oysters were subjected to water temperature elevation from March to June, and 20 were randomly sampled each month. The condition index (CI) and tissue weight rate (TWR) were examined by measuring shell length, shell height, shell width, and soft tissue weight. The IGF-1 signal in tissues (adductor muscle, digestive glands, gills, labial palps, mantle edges, and gonads) was analyzed by sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Western blotting. From April to June, the TWR of females and males increased from 19.1±2.9 to 21.0±3.6 and 18.2±2.0 to 19.2±2.5, respectively, while the CI remained the same. The IGF-1 signal in each tissue differed. IGF-1 was expressed in the adductor muscle, while tyrosine was expressed in all tissues. The phosphor (p)-ERK and p-AKT activities were high in the adductor muscle, mantle edge, and gonads. IGF-1 signaling affected the growth and maturity of the Pacific oysters examined.

Abstract Numerous studies have been dedicated to genetically engineering crops to enhance their yield and quality. One of the key requirements for generating genetically modified plants is the reprogramming of cell fate. However, the efficiency of shoot regeneration during this process is highly dependent on genotypes, and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we identified microRNA396 (miR396) as a negative regulator of shoot regeneration in tomato. By selecting two genotypes with contrasting shoot regeneration efficiencies and analyzing their transcriptome profiles, we found that miR396 and its target transcripts, which encode GROWTH-REGULATING FACTORs (GRFs), exhibit differential abundance between high- and low-efficiency genotypes. Suppression of miR396 functions significantly improved shoot regeneration rates along with increased expression of

Abstract This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in treating emotional problems in women with infertility. We searched for randomized controlled trials using acupuncture treatment for emotional problems in women with infertility using 11 databases from their inception to 30 June 2023. The control intervention included no treatment, sham acupuncture treatment, and conventional treatment. The primary outcome was emotion-related rating scales, and the secondary outcomes were total effectiveness rate, quality of life, clinical pregnancy rate, and adverse events. Twelve randomized controlled trials involving 1930 participants were included. A meta-analysis of these studies indicated that, as compared to the control treatment, acupuncture significantly improved the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Self-rating Anxiety Scale, Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale, and Self-rating Depression Scale scores, which were the primary emotion-related outcomes. Furthermore, the meta-analysis demonstrated that acupuncture treatment had a significant effect on the clinical pregnancy rate, which was the secondary outcome. No adverse events were reported in any of the studies. Our findings demonstrate the potential of acupuncture for treating emotional problems in women with infertility. However, well-designed and high-quality randomized clinical trials are required to confirm the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture treatment. The protocol of the current study was registered in PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42020166119).

Abstract Concrete structures often fail to perform their original functions due to problems such as deterioration and damage over time. Therefore, various repair materials have been studied to maintain deteriorated concrete structures. This study experimentally investigated the mechanical properties of high-early-strength cement-based repair materials for spraying. For spraying, the cement-based materials should have adoptable fluidity and strength: 200 ± 100 mm for flow; 20 MPa at 24 h and 40 MPa at 28 days for compressive strength, and 8 MPa at 28 days for flexural strength. Wollastonite mineral fibers (3-5 wt.%) and styrene-butadiene (SB) latex (5-7 wt.%) were studied to enhance this requirement. Fluidity was evaluated by flow test and measuring the heat of hydration; mechanical properties were evaluated in terms of compressive and flexural strength. The cement-to-silica sand ratio (C:S ratio) was also applied differently to adjust the pot life of polymer cement-based material (1:1 and 1:1.5) as a binder. Because wollastonite mineral fibers and SB latex affect workability, the water-to-binder ratio was regulated to reach the target flow according to the amount of wollastonite mineral fibers and SB latex. Regardless of the C:S ratio, all studied mixtures met the target 28 day compressive strength at 24 h, decreasing in strength with increasing amounts of wollastonite mineral fibers and latex. Flexural strength also fulfilled the target value, and it increased with increasing amounts of wollastonite mineral fibers and latex, unlike compressive strength. The optimal mix proportion of high-early-strength cement-based repair materials constituted 3 wt.% wollastonite mineral fibers and 5 wt.% SB latex as the binder in a C:S ratio of 1:1.5.
