    Abstract Autophagy is a highly conserved process that plays a crucial role in adaptation of plants to stress conditions. Melatonin and abscisic acid (ABA) share an antagonistic relationship; however, both are reported to elevate autophagy individually. Here, we report that melatonin alleviates drought stress effects like wilting and stunted growth in 18-day-old plants of drought-sensitive variety of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and improves the plant growth, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic efficiency, and sugar metabolism and transport. Melatonin priming increased the endogenous melatonin content (5.02-times) but decreased the ABA (2.63-times) by reducing NCED3 expression as compared to unprimed plants under drought. Also, elevated expression of ATG8c and ATG8f correlated with higher lipidated-ATG8 levels and modulation of RAPTOR1 suggesting a higher occurrence of autophagy and regulation of plant growth in primed stressed plants. Additionally, decreased TPS63 and increased TPP22 expression could have lowered the accumulation of trehalose-6-P (T6P) in primed stressed plants thus contributing to autophagy progression. Priming also enhanced the expression of MAPK6 and RAF18, and increased the transcript/protein levels of SnRK2.6 and KIN10, which is pointing towards melatonin's beneficial effect on autophagy under drought. Despite higher ABA content, elevated TPS63 and downregulated TPP22 could have hindered autophagy induction in unprimed stressed plants. Although fluridone treatment reduced the ABA content, the expression of SnRK2.6 and KIN10 remained unaltered in fluridone-treated and untreated primed plants indicating the ABA-independent expression. These results suggest that the melatonin-mediated activation of MAPK contributes to the ABA-independent activation of SnRK2, consequently, SnRK1 and autophagy under drought.

    Abstract Background: Endovascular repair of blunt thoracic aortic injury (BTAI) has dramatically reduced the morbidity and mortality of intervention. Injuries requiring zone 2 coverage of the aorta traditionally require left subclavian artery (LSA) sacrifice or open revascularization. Furthermore, these injuries are associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality and long-term morbidity. Here we report 1-year outcomes of total endovascular repair of BTAI with the GORE® TAG® Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis for LSA preservation.
    Methods: Across 34 investigative sites, 9 patients with BTAI requiring LSA coverage were enrolled in a nonrandomized, prospective study of a single-branched aortic endograft. The thoracic branch endoprosthesis device allows for graft placement proximal to the LSA and incorporates a single side branch for LSA perfusion.
    Results: This initial cohort included 8 male and 1 female patient with a median age of 43 (22, 76) and 12 months of follow-up. Five total years of follow-up are planned. All participants had grade 3 BTAI. All procedures took place between 2018 and 2019. The median injury severity score was 2 (0, 66). The median procedure time was 109 min (78, 162). All aortic injuries were repaired under general anesthesia and with heparinization. A spinal drain was used in one patient. Post-deployment balloon angioplasty was conducted in one case at the distal landing zone. There was one asymptomatic LSA branch occlusion 6 months after repair. It was attributed to the purposeful proximal deployment of the branch stent to accommodate an early vertebral takeoff. The occlusion did not require revascularization. There were no strokes, mortalities, or aortic adverse events (migration, endoleak, native aortic expansion, dissection, or thrombosis) through 12 months of follow-up.
    Conclusions: Initial cohort outcomes suggest that endovascular repair of zone 2 BTAI is feasible and has favorable outcomes using the thoracic branch device with LSA preservation. Additional cases and longer-term follow-up are required for a definitive assessment of the device's safety and durability in traumatic aortic injuries.

    Abstract Purpose: We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional study in central and western China to explore the association between inflammatory diet and stomach cancer odds.
    Patients and methods: Participants from five hospitals in the central and western regions were collected. All participants completed the questionnaire we provided before the gastroscopy examination, which includes inquiries about risk factors for stomach cancer and food frequency. All participants underwent gastroscopy, and a mucosal biopsy was confirmed pathologically. Pathological findings were classified as chronic gastritis group, precancerous lesions group and stomach cancer group. Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) scores were calculated based on the frequency of food occurrences in the questionnaire, and finally SPSS was used to calculate the correlation between variables.
    Results: A total of 1162 patients were included in this study, including 668 cases of chronic gastritis, 411 cases of precancerous lesions, and 83 cases of cancer. A single factor analysis was conducted to examine the risk factors of stomach cancer, revealing a significant association between a pro-inflammatory diet and the stomach cancer odds (p value < 0.05). The results of binary classification analysis further confirmed that a pro-inflammatory diet is a risk factor for stomach cancer 【odds ratio (OR) =7.400)】.     Conclusion: Pro-Inflammatory diet is a risk factor for stomach cancer, and may accelerate the progression of stomach mucosal disease.

    Abstract Background: Previous studies have found a relationship between hypertension or cardiovascular disease and simple renal cysts (SRCs) in health check-up population, but SRCs incidence is still controversially associated with serum uric acid (SUA) concentration in the nondiabetic participants. In this single-centre nest case-control study, serum uric acid levels were examined in relation to the incidence of SRCs in nondiabetic individuals.
    Method: Participants who underwent at least two renal ultrasound examinations with an interval of more than 12 months were enrolled. The results of clinical examinations, laboratory tests and abdominal ultrasound tests were recorded for each participant and analysed in this retrospective observation study.
    Result: A total of 144 control and 144 SRC patients were ultimately confirmed and included in further analysis. Hyperuricaemia (OR 2.846, 95% CI 1.519-5.332, p = 0.001) was significantly correlated with SRC formation according to multivariable analysis. In both the male and female groups, SRC patients had significantly higher serum uric acid levels compared with control subjects. In 54 SRC patients with cyst puncture, the serum uric acid concentration was positively correlated with the uric acid concentration in cyst fluid (r = 0.6144, p < 0.0001). The serum uric acid concentration was positively correlated with the maximum cyst diameter in the SRC patients (r = 0.4531, p < 0.0001).
    Conclusion: In a nondiabetic population, hyperuricaemia was significantly independently associated with a higher SRCs incidence. In SRC participants with cyst puncture, the SUA level had a significantly positive correlation with the uric acid level in cyst fluid. In SRC patients, the SUA level had a significantly positive correlation with cyst maximum diameter.

    Abstract The computation efficiency and flexibility of the accelerator hinder deep neural network (DNN) implementation in embedded applications. Although there are many publications on deep neural network (DNN) processors, there is still much room for deep optimization to further improve results. Multiple dimensions must be simultaneously considered when designing a DNN processor to reach the performance limit of the architecture, including architecture decision, flexibility, energy efficiency, and silicon cost minimization. Flexibility is defined as the ability to support as many multiple networks as possible and to easily adjust the scale. For energy efficiency, there are huge opportunities for power efficiency optimization, which involves access minimization and memory latency minimization based on on-chip memory minimization. Therefore, this work focused on low-power and low-latency data access with minimized silicon cost. This research was implemented based on an ASIP (application specific instruction set processor) in which an ISA was based on the caffe2 inference operator and the hardware design was based on a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) architecture. The scalability and system performance of our SoC extension scheme were demonstrated. The VLIW was used to execute multiple instructions in parallel. All costs for data access time were thus eliminated for the convolution layer. Finally, the processor was synthesized based on TSMC 65 nm technology with a 200 MHz clock, and the Soc extension scheme was analyzed in an experimental model. Our design was tested on several typical neural networks, achieving 196 GOPS at 200 MHz and 241 GOPS/W on the VGG16Net and AlexNet.

    Abstract Objective: Retrograde false lumen perfusion has limited the utility of aortic stent grafting for chronic aortic dissection. It is unknown whether balloon septal rupture can improve the outcomes for endovascular management of chronic aortic dissection.
    Methods: Included patients underwent false lumen obliteration and creation of a single-lumen aortic landing zone using balloon aortoplasty during thoracic endovascular aortic repair. The distal thoracic stent graft was sized to the total aortic lumen diameter, and septal rupture was performed within the stent graft with a compliant balloon in the region 5 cm proximal to the distal fabric edge. Clinical and radiographic outcomes are reported.
    Results: Forty patients, with an average age 56 years, underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair with septal rupture. Seventeen patients (43%) had chronic type B dissections, 17 of 40 patients (43%) had residual type A dissections, and 6 of 40 patients (15%) had acute type B dissections. Nine cases were emergency, complicated by rupture or malperfusion. Perioperative complications included 1 death (2.5%) due to rupture of the descending thoracic aorta and 2 (5%) instances each of stroke (neither permanent) and spinal cord ischemia (1 permanent). Two (5%) stent graft-induced new injuries were seen. Average postoperative computed tomography follow-up was 1.4 years. Thirteen patients (33%) had a decrease in aortic size, 25 of 39 patients (64%) were stable, and 1 of 39 patients (2.6%) had an increased aortic size. Partial and complete false lumen thrombosis were achieved in 10 of 39 patients (26%) and 29 of 39 patients (74%), respectively. Midterm aortic-related survival was 97.5% at an average of 1.6 years.
    Conclusions: Controlled balloon septal rupture offers an effective endovascular method to treat aortic dissection in the distal thoracic aorta.

    Abstract Objective: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair has emerged as the dominant paradigm for treatment of patients with descending thoracic aortic aneurysms. For aneurysms involving the aortic arch in the region of the left subclavian artery (LSA), branch vessel preservation to maintain blood flow to the LSA is recommended. Branched aortic endografts are an alternative to surgical revascularization of the LSA.
    Methods: Across 34 investigative sites, 84 patients with zone 2 aneurysms were enrolled in a nonrandomized, prospective study of a single branched aortic endograft. The thoracic branch endoprosthesis device allows for graft placement proximal to the LSA and incorporates a single side branch for left subclavian perfusion.
    Results: More than one-half of the patients were male (63%). Their average age was 70 ± 11 years. The aneurysm morphology was fusiform in 43 and saccular in 41 patients. The mean aneurysm diameter at screening was 56.2 mm. The mean follow-up was 30 months (range, 2.6-50.7 months). Reported here are the patient outcomes at 1 and 12 months. Predefined technical success with implantation of the device in landing zone 2 was achieved in 92% of patients (n = 77). There were no cases of aortic rupture, lesion-related mortality, or new-onset renal failure. There was no perioperative (30-day) mortality. A single case each of permanent paraplegia and paraparesis occurred. Three patients experienced a procedure-related stroke. Through 12 months, four patients died; none of the deaths were adjudicated as related to the device or procedure. One aortic reintervention was required. A single case of aortic enlargement (core laboratory) was reported at 6 months. Type I (n = 3) and III (n = 5) endoleaks occurred in 9.8% of patients, of which one (type III) required reintervention.
    Conclusions: Results from this device study in patients with zone 2 aneurysms demonstrate that early safety and efficacy outcomes are maintained up to 12 months after the endovascular procedure with low mortality and reintervention rates and an acceptable frequency of procedural complications, including neurologic complications.

    Abstract Background: Long term peritoneal dialysis leads to peritoneal epithelial-mesenchymal transformation (EMT), angiogenesis, and ultrafiltration failure. Although recent evidence suggests that inhibiting STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3) can prevent kidney fibrosis, and that STAT3 can enhance glucose metabolism, the effect of STAT3 in peritoneal fibrosis (PF) has not been clarified.
    Methods: Our study determined the effects of STAT3 on EMT and key glycolysis enzymes in mesothelial HMrSV5 cells by knockdown and overexpression of STAT3. In addition, we established a rat PF model to examine the role of pharmacologic inhibition of STAT3 or 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2, 6-bisphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3) in this process.
    Results: High glucose (HG) caused the upregulation of α-smooth muscle actin and transforming growth factor beta 1 and the downregulation of E-cadherin, and induced STAT3 activation in HMrSV5 cells. In addition, HMrSV5 cells cultured in high glucose showed high expression of key glycolysis enzymes, which could be inhibited by STAT3 siRNA. Furthermore, treating mesothelial cells with 3PO, the PFKFB3 inhibitor, could attenuate high glucose-induced EMT. Moreover, daily administration of dialysis fluid could induce peritoneal fibrosis. The peritoneal fibrosis was accompanied by enhanced phosphorylation of STAT3 and the upregulation of PFKFB3. The administration of BP-1-102 or 3PO prevented fibrosis and inhibited angiogenesis in PF rats.
    Conclusions: si-STAT3 attenuated the HG-induced EMT and hyperglycolysis, and the overexpression of STAT3 could induce EMT in HMrSV5 cells. 3PO could markedly attenuate HG-induced EMT by decreasing PFKEB3 in HMrSV5 cells. In addition, we demonstrated that inhibiting STAT3 signaling or peritoneal hyperglycolysis could attenuate peritoneal fibrosis and angiogenesis in vivo. Our findings linked the STAT3/PFKFB3 signaling to the development of PF. HG/STAT3/PFKFB3 might promote the progression of PF through regulating profibrosis and angiogenesis.
