    Abstract The study aimed to analyze the functional outcome and mobility in stroke patients depending on their cognitive state. 180 patients after first stroke were divided into four groups: 48 patients without symptoms of cognitive impairment (G1); 38 with mild cognitive impairment without dementia (G2); 47 with mild dementia (G3); 47 with moderate dementia (G4). The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Barthel Index (BI), Sitting Assessment Scale (SAS), Berg Balance Scale, Trunk Control Test and Test Up & Go were used. The tests were carried out at the time of admission to the ward (T1) and at the time of discharge (T2). A statistically significant improvement was demonstrated in all parameters in almost all groups. No significant difference was observed only in groups G1 and G4 in SAS head. Statistically significant differences in BI results in T2 between groups G1 and G4 were noted. The lowest change in BI was observed in the G4. Regression analysis showed that MMSE and BI at T1 and MMSE score at T2 explained the functional status at T2. Cognitive dysfunction at the time of admission to the ward and discharge may determining the patient's functional status at the time of discharge from the ward.

    Abstract The search for new antibacterial compounds is still a huge challenge for scientists. Each new chemotherapy drug is not 100% effective when introduced into treatment. Bacteria quickly become resistant to known structures. One promising group of new compounds is thiosemicarbazides. In the presented work, we looked for the relationship between structure and antibacterial activity within the group of thiosemicarbazide derivatives. This is a continuation of our previous work. Here, we decided to check to what extent the position of the 3-methoxyphenyl substituent affects potency. We obtained new structures that differ in the positions of the substituent in the thiosemicarbazide skeleton. Based on the obtained results of the biological tests, it can be concluded that the substituent in position 1 of thiosemicarbazide derivatives significantly determines their activity. Generally, among the substituents used, trifluoromethylphenyl turned out to be the most promising. The MIC values for compounds with this substituent are 64 µg/mL towards

    Abstract Windthrows lead to the formation of a characteristic land microtopography and they provide new habitats and substrata for species. The present study is novel, because it concerns different taxonomic groups of organisms and effects of various variables on species composition, richness and abundance within root plate-pit-mound (RPM) complexes. For the first time we studied lichens, liverworts, mosses and vascular plants on RPM complexes across major vegetation types, from deciduous to coniferous forests. We analyzed 164 RPM complexes which included in total 268 components: 115 root plates, 80 pits and 73 mounds. Besides the vegetation types and component types the following variables were also considered: dimensions (area, size), age (decomposition degree), species of the uprooted tree, shade, and elevation. The research revealed that root plates, pits and mounds had their own indicator species, but the key factors for the species composition were the species of uprooted trees and the vegetation type. Furthermore, the type of component and the vegetation type were also the most main variables determining the richness and abundance of the studied taxonomic groups of species. Analyses revealed the greatest species richness and abundance of lichens on root plates, and the highest richness of liverworts and vascular plants in pits. The type of component had no effect on the species richness of mosses. However, they were most abundant on mounds. The response of individual groups to the vegetation types and other variables varied. Findings from the study indicated that the presence of uprooted trees with different features (size and age, species of uprooted tree) is important for the biodiversity of mountain forests. We recommend leaving uprooted trees in forest communities for natural colonization, preferably large objects. Moreover, in managed forests a mosaic of forest communities that mimic the structure of natural unmanaged forests should be supported.

    Abstract All researchers agree that aphasia is a serious consequence of a stroke, but they also report contradictory data regarding the functional outcome. The aim of this study was, therefore, to assess the functional outcomes of stroke patients with and without aphasia, who were undertaking a regular rehabilitation programme.
    Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 116 post-stroke patients, including 54 patients without aphasia (G1) and 62 patients with aphasia (G2). The following tests were used before (T1) and after (T2) rehabilitation measurement points: Barthel Index (BI), Sitting Assessment Scale (SAS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Trunk Control Test (TCT), Test Up & Go (TUG) and the Timed Walk Test (TWT).
    Results: The group of post-stroke patients with aphasia had a significantly longer time since a stroke on admission, a significantly longer length of stay in the ward and significantly worse SAS and TCT scores at T2, compared to patients without aphasia. Both groups achieved significant improvement in all studied parameters (SAS, TCT, BI, BBS, TUG and TWT). Aphasia was a predictor of functional status in the stroke patients group, but only at the time of admission to the ward.
    Conclusions: Patients with and without aphasia have an equal likelihood of improving their functional status and returning to independence. Aphasia should not be an absolute factor that excludes stroke patients from research studies on their functional status.

    Abstract In living organisms, carotenoids are incorporated in biomembranes, remarkably modulating their mechanical characteristics, fluidity, and permeability. Significant resonance enhancement of Raman optical activity (ROA) signals of carotenoid chiral aggregates makes resonance ROA (RROA), a highly selective tool to study exclusively carotenoid assemblies in model membranes. Hence, RROA is combined with electronic circular dichroism (ECD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), molecular dynamics, and quantum-chemical calculations to shed new light on the carotenoid aggregation in dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposomes. Using representative members of the carotenoid family: apolar α-carotene and more polar fucoxanthin and zeaxanthin, the authors demonstrate that the stability of carotenoid aggregates is directly linked with their orientation in membranes and the monomer structures inside the assemblies. In particular, polyene chain distortion of α-carotene molecules is an important feature of J-aggregates that show increased orientational freedom and stability inside liposomes compared to H-assemblies of more polar xanthophylls. In light of these results, RROA emerges as a new tool to study active compounds and drugs embedded in membranes.

    Abstract Natural polyether ionophore salinomycin (Sal) has been widely used in veterinary medicine as an antibiotic effective in the treatment of coccidian protozoa and Gram-positive bacteria. Moreover, chemical modification of the Sal structure has been found to be a promising strategy to generate semisynthetic analogs with biological activity profiles improved relative to those of the native compound. In this context, we synthesized and thoroughly evaluated the antibacterial potential of a library of C1/C20 singly and doubly modified derivatives of C20-epi-salinomycin, that is, analogs of Sal with inversed stereochemistry at the C20 position. Among the synthesized analog structures, the most promising antibacterial active agents were those obtained via regioselective O-acylation of C20-epi-hydroxyl, particularly esters 7, 9, and 11. Such C20 singly modified compounds showed excellent inhibitory activity against planktonic staphylococci, both standard and clinical strains, and revealed potential in preventing the formation of bacterial biofilms. In combination with their non-genotoxic properties, these Sal derivatives represent attractive candidates for further antimicrobial drug development.
