Abstract We communicate a feasibility study for high-resolution structural characterization of biomacromolecules in aqueous solution from X-ray scattering experiments measured over a range of scattering vectors (q) that is approximately two orders of magnitude wider than used previously for such systems. Scattering data with such an extended q-range enables the recovery of the underlying real-space atomic pair distribution function, which facilitates structure determination. We demonstrate the potential of this method for biomacromolecules using several types of cyclodextrins (CD) as model systems. We successfully identified deviations of the tilting angles for the glycosidic units in CDs in aqueous solutions relative to their values in the crystalline forms of these molecules. Such level of structural detail is inaccessible from standard small angle scattering measurements. Our results call for further exploration of ultra-wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements for biomacromolecules.

Abstract Pixian broad bean paste (PBBP) is an indispensable food widely used in many East Asian countries, yet the knowledge about bioactive peptides released from parent proteins by enzymatic hydrolysis is limited. A total of 5867 low-molecular weight peptides were identified in the highly bioactive subfractions of the PBBP alcalase hydrolysates using traditional and peptidomics approaches. 19 short peptides (3-5 amino acids) were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, including 5 tripeptides, 8 tetrapeptides, and 6 pentapeptides. 5848 medium-sized peptides (6-10 amino acids) were characterized using the peptidomics approach, including 1484 hexapeptides, 1217 heptapeptides, 1634 octapeptides, 927 nonapeptides, and 586 decapeptides. The comprehensive method can be used for the investigation of bioactive peptides in complex food matrices.

Abstract Cordyceps represent a valuable class of medicinal fungi with potential utilization. The overexploitation and resource scarcity of Cordyceps sinensis (CS) have led to the emergence of Cordyceps such as Cordyceps militaris (CM) and Cordyceps cicadae (CC) as substitutes. The medicinal value of CS is often considered superior to other Cordyceps , potentially owing to differences in active ingredients. This study aimed to evaluate the differences in the composition and abundance of the primary and secondary metabolites of CS and its substitutes by untargeted metabolomics. A total of 4671 metabolites from 18 superclasses were detected. CS and its substitutes were rich in amino acids, lipids, organic acids, and their derivatives. We statistically analyzed the metabolites and found a total of 285 differential metabolites (3′-Adenylic acid, O-Adipoylcarnitine, L-Dopachrome, etc.) between CS and CC, CS and CM, and CM and CC, which are potential biomarkers. L-glutamate and glycerophospholipids were differential metabolites. A KEGG enrichment analysis indicated that the tyrosine metabolic pathway and tryptophan metabolism pathway are the most differentially expressed pathways among the three Cordyceps . In contrast, CS was enriched in a higher abundance of most lipid metabolites when compared to CM and CC, which may be an indispensable foundation for the pharmacological functions of CS. In conclusion, systematic, untargeted metabolomics analyses for CS and other Cordyceps have delivered a precious resource for insights into metabolite landscapes and predicted potential components of disease therapeutics.

Abstract We demonstrated a diode-pumped continuous wave and passively Q-switched Nd:Lu(x)Y(1-x)VO4 laser at 1.34 μm with V3+:YAG as the saturable absorber. The crystal Nd:Lu(x)Y(1-x)VO4 with equal ionic ratio (x = 0.5) shows better laser performance. The maximum continuous wave output power of 1.45 W was obtained with the optical efficiency of 20.1% and the slope efficiency of 24.5%. For the pulsed operation, the minimum pulse width achieved was 42 ns with the pulse repetition frequency of 142 kHz, and the single pulse energy and the peak power were estimated to be 6.62 μJ and 157.6 W, respectively.

Abstract In identical exposure and processing conditions, we compare the exposure characteristics of soft-x-ray film, SIOFM-5FW, with Kodak101-05 and Ilford Q-plates in the soft-x-ray and extreme UV region below 100 nm, using D-19 and Phenisol developers. The experimental results show that for radiation greater than 10 nm, the response of SIOFM-5FW lies between the Kodak101-05 and the Ilford Q-plates but is closer to the former. For radiation of less than 10 nm, the SIOFM-5FW is more sensitive than the Kodak101-05 plate, with a higher saturated optical density, a higher dynamic range, and an obvious carbon K absorption edge structure in the spectra obtained. The effects of the two developers used on the exposure characteristics are discussed.

Abstract We report a rare case of small-cell lung carcinoma with long-term survival treated in the Department of Oncology, Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The pathological-clinical features and diagnosis-treatment progress were analyzed, and the comprehensive treatment strategies, tumor heterogeneity and prognosis of this tumor type were discussed by comparing with other previous studies. The 62-year-old patient was diagnosed with small-cell lung carcinoma and received surgery, radiotherapy and multi-line treatment, and had survived for 13 years after the surgery. The heterogeneity of small cell lung carcinoma should be carefully evaluated to improve the prognosis of the patients.

Abstract Hepatolenticular degeneration is common among rare diseases. China has a higher incidence rate than Western countries, and it is increasing year by year. The disease is easy to overlook and misdiagnose due to its complexity and non-specific clinical manifestations. Therefore, the British Association for the Study of the Liver has recently issued practice guidelines for the evaluation and treatment of hepatolenticular degeneration in order to aid clinicians in improving the clinical decision-making process regarding diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up management. Herein is a brief introduction and interpretation of the content of the guideline, with aim of facilitating its application in clinical practice.
