Abstract Background: Although current therapy for patients with early-stage squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) is potentially curative, the recurrence rate is high. Patients with recurrent or metastatic (R/M) SCCHN have a poor prognosis and substantial disease burden, including impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL), productivity loss and indirect costs, such as need for caregiver support. The aim of this study was to characterize the impact of R/M SCCHN and its first-line treatment on patient and caregiver quality of life, daily activities and work productivity using real-world evidence from Europe.
Methods: This was a multicentre retrospective study of patients with R/M SCCHN in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom incorporating patient and caregiver surveys, and a physician-reported medical chart review, conducted between January and May 2019. Patients aged 18 or over with a physician confirmed diagnosis R/M SCCHN completed four validated measures of disease activity and its impact on quality of life and work productivity, while caregivers also completed questionnaire to assess the burden of providing care. Physicians provided data for clinical characteristics, patient management, testing history and treatment patterns.
Results: A total of 195 medical/clinical oncologists provided data for 937, predominantly male (72%) patients, with almost half of patients aged over 65 years. The most frequently reported symptoms were fatigue (43%), weight loss (40%), pain (35%) and difficulty swallowing (32%). The EXTREME regimen was the most common first line therapy in over half of patients, who reported moderate or extreme pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression, and problems with self-care resulting in a diminished health status compared with the general population. Only 14% were employed with high absenteeism or presenteeism, and over half of patients had a caregiver for whom the burden of care was substantial.
Conclusion: Our results provide real-world insight into the multi-faceted burden associated with R/M SCCHN. The combination of poor HRQoL and the impairment in daily activities, social life and employment illustrates the wider impact of R/M SCCHN on patients and their caregivers, and highlights a need for novel 1 L treatment regimens to improve the humanistic and productivity burdens of this cancer.

Abstract Phosphatases and kinases maintain an equilibrium of dephosphorylated and phosphorylated proteins, respectively, that are required for critical cellular functions. Imbalance in this equilibrium or irregularity in their function causes unfavorable cellular effects that have been implicated in the development of numerous diseases. Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) catalyze the dephosphorylation of protein substrates on tyrosine residues, and their involvement in cell signaling and diseases such as cancer and inflammatory and metabolic diseases has made them attractive therapeutic targets. However, PTPs have proved challenging in therapeutics development, garnering them the unfavorable reputation of being undruggable. Nonetheless, great strides have been made toward the inhibition of PTPs over the past decade. Here, we discuss the advancement in small-molecule inhibition for the PTP subfamily known as the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphatases (MKPs). We review strategies and inhibitor discovery tools that have proven successful for small-molecule inhibition of the MKPs and discuss what the future of MKP inhibition potentially might yield.

Abstract Background: and Purpose: Complex Interpersonal Trauma is a phenomenon with great impact on the American population. Persons who have survived complex interpersonal traumas can experience symptoms beyond what is captured in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual's (DSM-5) diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Yoga is an ancient practice that has been found to have healing benefit for persons impacted by complex interpersonal trauma. The purpose of this study is to further the body of clinical research in support of yoga as a therapeutic intervention.
Materials and methods: This study uses transcendental phenomenology methodology to gain a deeper understanding of the experience of yoga for those who have survived complex interpersonal trauma. Narrative interviews were used to gather data, yielding insight that aligns with current findings in literature supporting yoga as a healing intervention. The sample size for this study was five participants.
Results: This study's findings shed light on the benefits of yoga for persons with complex interpersonal trauma. Themes discovered include transformation through yoga, comparing holistic benefits through opposing yoga styles, community and relationships, and trauma healing.
Conclusion: This study and its findings offer implications for clinical social work practice to incorporate yoga as a therapeutic intervention for trauma.

Abstract Introduction: Optimising clinical education in radiography is crucial to ensure competent graduates provide safe and effective patient care. Radiographers play a vital role in student supervision undertaken in the complex clinical environment. A greater understanding of factors influencing their ability to undertake this role effectively is needed. The study aimed to explore radiographers' attitudes and perceptions of confidence in undertaking clinical supervision and perceived barriers in a 'real-life' clinical department.
Methods: The lens of Bandura's social-cognitive theory was utilised to assist the exploration of the desired constructs. An anonymous online survey was developed and circulated among qualified radiographers in Ireland. Descriptive (frequencies and percentages) and inferential statistical testing was undertaken. Thematic analysis was conducted on optional free-text comments.
Results: 217 responses were received. Although most radiographers reported a positive attitude (73.3%), a significant minority reported not being confident across survey items related to the tasks required (ranging from 20.7%-29.1%). Time pressures from clinical workload, perceived lack of organisational support, and lack of guidance on expectations were highlighted challenges.
Conclusion: The survey has enabled first-hand identification of some challenges radiographers encounter in undertaking students' clinical supervision. Radiographers must be supported to optimise the clinical learning environment where both students and educators are valued.
Implications for practice: The findings highlight impact on educational support, practice, policy and future research. Effective clinical supervision is dependent on collaborative engagement and support being evident at all levels, including the clinical department, academic and healthcare institutions, and national organisations.
