Abstract Alexithymia is widely recognized as the inability to identify and express emotions. It is a construct which consists of four cognitive traits such as difficulty in identifying feelings, describing feelings to others, externally oriented thinking, and limited imaginative capacity. Several studies have linked alexithymia to cognitive functioning, observing greater alexithymia scores associated with poorer cognitive abilities. Despite Alzheimer’s disease (AD) being a neurodegenerative pathology characterized by cognitive troubles from the early stages, associated to behavioral and emotional disturbances, very few investigations have studied the alexithymia in AD. These studies have shown that alexithymia scores—assessed with Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS)—were greater in AD patients than healthy participants. The objective of the study was to investigate if the alexithymia was present in patients with mild AD. We hypothesized that the AD group would show more alexithymia features than the control group. We evaluated 54 subjects, including 27 patients diagnosed with mild AD and 27 normal healthy controls, using the Shalling Sifneos Psychosomatic Scale (SSPS-R) and a neuropsychological test battery. Using non-parametric statistical analyses—Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney U tests—we observed that the SSPS-R scores were similar in the AD and control groups. All participants showed SSPS-R scores below to 10 points, which means no-alexithymia. We did not find significant correlations between SSPS-R scores and cognitive variables in both groups ( p > 0.22), but we observed a negative association between name abilities and alexithymia, but it does not reach to significance ( p = 0.07). However, a significant correlation between SSPS-R score and mood state, assessed using Zerssen Rating Scale, was found in both groups ( p = 0.01). Because we did not find a significant difference in the alexithymia assessment between both subject groups, pot hoc analyses were computed for each item of the SSPS-R. We made comparisons of ...

Abstract Objectives: The aim of this study was to adapt and validate the Schizophrenia Caregiver's Quality of Life Questionnaire (S-CGQoL) for use in the Hispanic-American population from the caregiver's perspective.
Methods: A cross-sectional instrumental model was used, with a sample of 253 caregivers of patients suffering of Schizophrenia in Bolivia, Peru and Chile. The psychometric properties of the S-CGQoL were tested through construct validity, reliability and some aspects of external validity. In addition, in order to assess the nature of the different items across the three countries, a Differential Performance Analysis (DPA) was conducted.
Results: A confirmatory factor analysis showed that the scale structure was well correlated to the initial structure of the QoL-MDS. The results confirmed the existence of adequate reliability indicators (α>.70 and ω>.80) and the absence of FIDs supporting the invariance of item calibrations among the three Latin American countries.
Conclusions: The adaptation and validation of the S-CGQoL questionnaire demonstrate adequate psychometric properties to assess the quality of life of caregivers in samples of middle-income countries in Latin America.

Abstract Purpose: Adolescence is considered a period in which individuals are particularly at risk of negative consequences related to sexual health. Increased knowledge levels have traditionally been used as an indicator of the effectiveness of educational programs, but attitudes are not addressed and are a key element for the success of such programs. The aim of this study is to determine the level of knowledge and attitudes toward the use of contraceptive methods among nursing students. A multicenter cross-sectional study was carried out. In total, 2914 university students (aged 18–25 years) enrolled in the study. Participants completed two validated scales to measure knowledge level and attitudes toward contraceptive use. Nursing degree students who received training about contraceptives obtained a success rate of over 70%, compared to 15.3% among students who had not received such training ( p < 0.001). The mean attitude score was 43.45 points (10–50), but there were no significant differences in terms of student training ( p = 0.435), although they were significantly higher among students who used contraceptives at first or last sexual intercourse ( p < 0.001). There was a significant weak correlation between the level of knowledge and attitudes toward the use of contraceptives. An adequate level of knowledge about sexuality and contraceptive methods does not correspond to positive attitudes toward their use, although having an excellent attitude toward contraceptive use is related to their use during youth and adolescence.

Abstract In this work, a dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment at mild conditions was employed to fractionate brewer’s spent grain (BSG) with the aim of achieving high carbohydrate recovery. A Box-Behnken experimental design was used with temperature (110–130 °C), acid concentration (1–3% w/v) and time (10–40 min) as independent factors, the objective being to determine the best conditions for the release of glucose (following enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated solids) along with that of hemicellulosic sugars in the liquors. The optimal pretreatment conditions were found to be 130 °C, 1% H2SO4 and 26 min, which allowed the recovery of 94% of the sugars in raw BSG. Next, the effect of substrate concentration on the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process of the pretreated solid was studied. Likewise, the fermentability of the resulting prehydrolysate was evaluated with two xylose fermenting microorganisms, Scheffersomyces stipitis and Escherichia coli. The overall proposed BSG bioconversion process yielded 22.9 L bioethanol from 100 kg of dry biomass.

Abstract Objective: To perform a systematic review of all cases of the association between Kikuchi's disease (KD) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and to ascertain the clinical and laboratory characteristics of this association (KD-SLE).
Methods: We conducted a systematic search of the scientific literature until 31 January 2016. For study purposes, only patients aged >14 years, with histologically proven KD, definite SLE and adequate clinical data were included. To compare KD-SLE against isolated KD and SLE, we selected 2 large series of patients with KD and 4 series of SLE patients.
Results: The search found 158 adults with proven KD-SLE. Of these, 113 with sufficient clinical information were included; 86 were women (female:male ratio = 5.0); mean age at diagnosis was 34 years (range: 14-56 years); and an ethnic distribution of 50.5% Asian, 34% Caucasian, and 15% other. KD-SLE patients differed significantly from patients with isolated KD, presenting with a higher frequency of high fever (90%), severe KD (88%), and extranodal manifestations. When compared to patients with SLE, those with KD-SLE presented with a higher frequency of fever and systemic symptoms and a lower frequency of lupus nephritis (22%). SLE had been diagnosed before KD in 18% of cases, simultaneously in 51%, and after KD in 31%. No significant differences were found in terms of time of diagnosis.
Conclusions: While KD-SLE patients share many clinical and laboratory manifestations with SLE, they differ in a lower frequency of lupus nephritis. The relative time of diagnosis of each disease did not affect the clinical expression of KD-SLE.
