    Abstract The 624.15 m glaciomarine sedimentary succession recovered in the CRP-2/2A drillcore comprises lower Oligocene (<c. 31 Ma) to lower Miocene (18.5 Ma) strata that are overlain by a thin succession of Pliocene and Pleistocene strata. The age model for the CRP-2/2A drillhole, as presented in this paper, is based on combined microfossil biostratigraphy. 40Ar/39Ar age on volcanic material, 87Sr/86Sr analyses on mollusc shells, and correlation of a magnetic polarity zonation to the magnetic polarity time scale (MPTS). Between 25.92 and 109.05 metres below sea floor (mbsf), several alternative correlations to the MPTS are possible, all of which suggest that sediment accumulation rates averaged ~180 <mark>m/m.y. between unconformities, although actual sedimentation rates may have been higher. Between 109.05 and 306.65 mbsf, the age model is straightforward and average sedimentation rates were much higher (>1000 m/m.y.). Between 306.65 mbsf and the bottom of the drillcore (624.15 mbsf), fewer datums are available to constrain the age model and unique correlation with the MPTS is not possible, although high average sediment accumulation rates are likely. A significant unconformity is identified at 306.65 mbsf, which may represent as much as 5 m.y. of missing time. Additional unconformities at 25.92 and 130.27 mbsf account for c. 16 and 2.5 m.y. of missing time, respectively. The Oligocene-lower Miocene interval documented in the CRP-2/2A drillcore spans about 13 million years, however, it is possible that more time is missing in sequence-bounding unconformities than is represented in the stratigraphic record recovered in the CRP-2/2A drillcore.

    Abstract The major ion chemistry of the ocean has been assumed to be controlled by river input, hydrothermal circulation at mid-ocean ridges, carbonate production, and low-temperature alteration of seafloor basalt, but marine chemical budgets remain difficult to balance. Here we propose that large-scale groundwater flow and diagenetic reactions in continental shelf sediments have been overlooked as an important contributor to major ion budgets in the ocean.     Abstract Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease with both genetic and environmental risk factors. Efforts to understand the growing incidence and prevalence of PD have led to several state PD registry initiatives in the United States. The California PD Registry (CPDR) is the largest state-wide PD registry and requires electronic reporting of all eligible cases by all medical providers. We borrow from our experience with the CPDR to highlight 4 gaps to population-based PD registries. Specifically we address (1) who should be included in PD registries; (2) what data should be collected in PD case reports; (3) how to ensure the validity of case reports; and (4) how can state PD registries exchange and aggregate information. We propose a set of recommendations that addresses these and other gaps toward achieving a promise of a practical, interoperable, and scalable PD registry in the U.S., which can serve as a key health information resource to support epidemiology, health equity, quality improvement, and research.

    Abstract Genetic diversity plays a vital role in the adaptability of salmon to changing environmental conditions that can introduce new selective pressures on populations. Variability among local subpopulations may increase the chance that certain advantageous genes are passed down to future generations to mitigate susceptibility to novel diseases, warming oceans, loss of genetic stocks, and ocean acidification. Class I and II genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are crucial for the fitness of Chinook salmon due to the role they play in disease and pathogen resistance. The objective of this study was to assess the DNA sequence variability among wild and hatchery populations of Alaskan Chinook salmon at the class I α1 and class II β1 exons of the MHC. We hypothesized that the 96 wild samples taken from the Deshka River would display greater levels of observed heterozygosity (Ho) relative to expected heterozygosity (He) in suggesting that individuals with similar phenotypes mate with one another more frequently than would be expected under random mating patterns. Conversely, since no mate selection occurs in the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish hatchery, we would not expect to see this discrepancy (He = Ho) in the 96 hatchery fish tested in this study. Alternatively, we hypothesized that post-mating selection is driving higher levels of observed heterozygosity as opposed to mate selection. If this is the case, we will observe higher than expected levels of heterozygosity among hatchery salmon. Both populations displayed higher levels of observed heterozygosity than expected heterozygosity at the Class I and II loci but genetic differentiation between the spatially distinct communities was minimal. Class I sequences showed evidence of balancing selection, despite high rates of non-synonymous substitutions observed, specifically at the peptide binding regions of both MHC genes.

    Abstract Supramolecular polymers offer tremendous potential to produce new "smart" materials, however, there remains a need to develop systems that are responsive to external stimuli. In this work, visible-light responsive hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymers comprising photoresponsive supramolecular synthons (I-III) consisting of two hydrogen bonding motifs (HBMs) connected by a central ortho-tetrafluorinated azobenzene have been characterized by DOSY NMR and viscometry. Comparison of different hydrogen-bonding motifs reveals that assembly in the low and high concentration regimes is strongly influenced by the strength of association between the HBMs. I, Incorporating a triply hydrogen-bonded heterodimer, was found to exhibit concentration dependent switching between a monomeric pseudo-cycle and supramolecular oligomer through intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the HBMs. II, Based on the same photoresponsive scaffold, and incorporating a quadruply hydrogen-bonded homodimer was found to form a supramolecular polymer which was dependent upon the ring-chain equilibrium and thus dependent upon both concentration and photochemical stimulus. Finally, III, incorporating a quadruply hydrogen-bonded heterodimer represents the first photoswitchable AB type hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymer. Depending on the concentration and photostationary state, four different assemblies dominate for both monomers II and III, demonstrating the ability to control supramolecular assembly and physical properties triggered by light.

Clinical suspicion must be present for respiratory disease, particularly in the immunocompromised or in those not responding to empiric treatment approaches, and an extended travel history should be obtained. This article summarises the epidemiology of PEM, key clinical features, diagnostic strategies and management.
