Abstract Atrial fibrillation is a common clinical arrhythmia with high morbidity and a risk of stroke. The Cox-maze IV procedure that uses radiofrequency energy for ablation is established as an effective way to eliminate atrial fibrillation. Compared to the Cox-maze IV procedure, the video-assisted Wolf mini-maze procedure is associated with reduced surgical trauma, but still requires bilateral thoracotomies, and the ablation line connecting the right and left pulmonary vein isolations cannot be created with a bipolar ablation clamp. We have developed a novel video-assisted mini-maze technique that uses a unilateral (left chest) thoracoscopic approach (the Mei mini-maze procedure).

Abstract Background: Chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases play a crucial role in the onset of colorectal cancer (CRC). Effectively impeding the progression of colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) can be instrumental in hindering CRC development. Wu-Mei-Pill (WMP), a formulation comprising various herbal extracts, is clinically employed for CAC treatment, yet the underlying mechanism of WMP's efficacy in CAC remains unclear. Our study firstly demonstrated the effects and mechanisms of WMP on transcriptional and metabolic levels based on integrated transcriptomics and untargeted metabolomics and relative experimental validations.
Materials and methods: A CAC mouse model was established through a single injection of azoxymethane (AOM) followed by intermittent dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) intervention, with subsequent WMP administration. Initially, the therapeutic impact of WMP on the CAC model was assessed by observing survival rate, body weight change, colon length, tumor number, tumor load, and pathological changes in the colon tissue of CAC mice post-WMP intervention. Subsequently, differential genes and metabolites in the colorectal tissue of CAC mice following WMP intervention were identified through transcriptomics and non-targeted metabolomics. Finally, the influence of WMP on the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) pathway, Wnt pathway, and CC motif chemokine ligand 3 (CCL3)/ CC motif chemokine receptor 1 (CCR1) axis in CAC mice was verified through western blot, immunofluorescence, and ELISA based on the results of transcriptomics and non-targeted metabolomics.
Results: WMP intervention enhanced survival, alleviated body weight loss, shortened colon length, tumor occurrence, and pathological changes in the colorectal tissue of CAC mice, such as glandular damage, tumourigenesis, and inflammatory cell infiltration. Transcriptomic and non-targeted metabolomic results revealed that WMP intervention up-regulated the expression of key regulatory mechanisms of fatty acid oxidation PPAR pathway-related genes (Pparg, Ppara, Cpt1a, and Acadm) and metabolites (L-carnitine and L-palmitoylcarnitine). Additionally, it down-regulated Wnt pathway-related genes (Wnt3, Axin2, Tcf7, Mmp7, Lgr5, Wnt5a, Fzd6, Wnt7b, Lef1, and Fzd10 etc.) and pro-inflammatory related genes (Il1b, Il6, Il17a, Ccl3, and Ccr1 etc.). Experimental validation demonstrated that WMP up-regulated PPAR pathway-related proteins [PPARγ, PPARα, carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A), and acyl-CoA dehydrogenase medium chain (ACADM)] in the colorectal tissue of CAC mice. It also down-regulated Wnt pathway-related proteins [β-catenin, T-cell factor (TCF), lymphoid enhancer-binding factor (LEF), and matrix metallopeptidase 7 (MMP7)], inhibited the nuclear translocation of the key transcription factor β-catenin in the Wnt pathway, and suppressed epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) activation induced by the Wnt pathway (up-regulated E-cadherin and down-regulated Vimentin). Furthermore, WMP intervention reduced pro-inflammatory factors [interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, and IL-17A] and decreased CCL3/CCR1 axis factors, including CCL3 protein levels and diminished F4/80
Conclusion: WMP significantly inhibits CAC tumorigenesis by up-regulating PPARα-mediated fatty acid oxidation, inhibiting the Wnt signaling pathway-mediated EMT, and suppressing CCL3/CCR1-mediated inflammatory responses.

Abstract An increasing body of evidence shows that macrophages play an important role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). Macrophage polarization and changes in related signaling pathways are reported to have a protective effect on intestinal inflammation. The well-known Chinese medicine Wumeiwan (WMW) has been used to treat diarrhea, one of the main symptoms of colitis, for more than 2,000 years. Increasing evidence shows that WMW can inhibit intestinal inflammation and repair damaged intestinal mucosa, but its effector mechanisms are unknown. Therefore, we studied the prophylactic effects of WMW in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC and its effects on macrophage mechanisms and polarization. The results show that colitis was significantly alleviated in mice in the WMW group, and the secretion and expression of pro-inflammatory factors TNF-

Abstract Aerosol effects on convective clouds remain an important open-ended question in climate research. This paper reports on the climatological effects of anthropogenic aerosols on the convections during Mei-yu season by means of long-term simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF/Chem) model. Sensitivity experiments indicate that increased aerosols reduce the total rainfall and convection occurrences by 9.00% and 7.17% over the Yangtze–Huai River Valley during Mei-yu season due to the suppression of shallow convections with cloud geometrical thickness (CGT) less than 4 km. Aerosol radiation effect plays a dominant role in shallow convections suppression by cooling the surface air and increasing regional atmospheric stability. On the contrary, deep convections are invigorated under polluted conditions with a stronger updraft and more latent heating release, which can be explained by the interactions between aerosol-induced microphysical effects and the dynamical response. Due to the shorter distances that the downdrafts accelerate to the surface in shallow convections, the interaction between dynamics and microphysics is reduced comparing to the deep convections, leading to suppression of shallow convections at high aerosols. In addition, relative humidity which controls the balance between the net generation and loss of condensate mass is an important meteorological factor in regulating the net influence of aerosols on convections. These findings provide us insight into the competing mechanism between aerosol radiative and microphysical effects on convections during Mei-yu season, which can aid in better parameterizing aerosol effects in climate models.

Abstract The record-breaking mei-yu in the Yangtze-Huaihe River valley (YHRV) in 2020 was characterized by an early onset, a delayed retreat, a long duration, a wide meridional rainbelt, abundant precipitation, and frequent heavy rainstorm processes. It is noted that the East Asian monsoon circulation system presented a significant quasi-biweekly oscillation (QBWO) during the mei-yu season of 2020 that was associated with the onset and retreat of mei-yu, a northward shift and stagnation of the rainbelt, and the occurrence and persistence of heavy rainstorm processes. Correspondingly, during the mei-yu season, the monsoon circulation subsystems, including the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH), the upper-level East Asian westerly jet, and the low-level southwesterly jet, experienced periodic oscillations linked with the QBWO. Most notably, the repeated establishment of a large southerly center, with relatively stable latitude, led to moisture convergence and ascent which was observed to develop repeatedly. This was accompanied by a long-term duration of the mei-yu rainfall in the YHRV and frequent occurrences of rainstorm processes. Moreover, two blocking highs were present in the middle to high latitudes over Eurasia, and a trough along the East Asian coast was also active, which allowed cold air intrusions to move southward through the northwestern and/or northeastern paths. The cold air frequently merged with the warm and moist air from the low latitudes resulting in low-level convergence over the YHRV. The persistent warming in the tropical Indian Ocean is found to be an important external contributor to an EAP/PJ-like teleconnection pattern over East Asia along with an intensified and southerly displaced WPSH, which was observed to be favorable for excessive rainfall over YHRV.

Abstract Intimately related to the Asian summer monsoon, the Mei-yu rainfall is also strongly influenced by atmospheric circulation in the middle to high latitudes, especially the Northeast Cold Vortex (NECV), and thus making prediction of the Mei-yu rainfall a challenging issue. The prediction skills of the CAMS-CSM (full name as the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences Climate System Model) for a NECV event at the early onset of 2020 Mei-yu season and the associated Mei-yu rainfall are evaluated. Hindcast experiments with two different horizontal resolutions are employed to assess the climate model in predicting the synoptic system. The ERA5 reanalysis data and the CN05.1 precipitation data are adopted for comparison. Results indicate that both the middle-resolution (T106, ∼1°) and high-resolution (T255, ∼0.47°) version of the CAMS-CSM model are able to capture this NECV event, while showing some biases on its intensity, duration and location. Overpredictions in the strength and duration of the NECV are found in the T106 version, which could be attributed to a stronger dry invasion from higher levels during the development stage, an intensified Okhotsk blocking high, and a weakened upper-level jet at the decaying phase. As for the T255 version, a stronger NECV is predicted further north than the reanalysis, and sources of the biases are identified, including northward displacements of the high-level dry invasion and the westerly jet. Further investigation suggests that the T106 version performs better than the T255 version in predicting the Mei-yu rainfall because of a more accurate prediction on the location of the NECV. Positive biases in the cold advection and Mei-yu front are identified in the T106 version, contributing to a stronger Mei-yu rainfall than the observation. The Mei-yu rainfall is poorly predicted in T255 version due to prediction errors in the location of the NECV-induced cold advection. Therefore, improving the prediction skill of the NECV, not only its intensity but also location, is of vital significance to achieve a better prediction of the Mei-yu rainfall.

Abstract Mei (Prunus mume) is widely planted in Eastern Asian countries. To evaluate the effect of cultivar and producing origin on the quality of Mei fruit, we studied the phytochemical properties and antioxidant activities of the 16 Mei fruit cultivars from 6 provinces in China, as well as their profiles of 121 volatile compounds, 5 organic acids, 13 minerals, 24 amino acids and 3 active peptides. Multivariate analysis revealed that the four Mei fruit cultivars with a drier climate in Yunnan province had the characteristics of low water moistures and proteins contents, high total acids, soluble solids, flavones, and phenols contents, and high antioxidant activities, which could be distinguished from fruits of other producing areas. Further component analysis showed that Mei fruits were rich in volatile compounds, organic acids (such as citric acid and malic acid), minerals (such as K, Ca, Mg, P, and Fe), and amino acids (such as Orn, Asn, and Asp), and the nutrient composition ratio in different cultivars was different. In conclusion, Mei fruits can be used as nutritious health food and different cultivars focus on different nutritional compositions.

Abstract Enhanced predictability of high-impact weather events is a Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction Project (S2S) priority. In early summer 2020, a record-breaking heavy rainfall event occurred over the Yangtze River valley during the mei-yu season (June and July). Here we evaluate the S2S model forecast performance concerning the summer 2020 extreme mei-yu event over the Yangtze River valley. Our results show all operational S2S models exhibit fluctuating high-low–high forecast skill patterns during this three-stage mei-yu event, determined by different dominant circulations. In particular, the poor mid-latitude circulation forecast (low trough over northern China) in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) negative phase, with relative more contribution than that of the low-latitude circulation (western North Pacific subtropical high and South Asian high), decreases the model forecast skill for mei-yu rainfall in early-mid July. The prediction barrier of the NAO pattern and its downstream response, via the eastward-propagating wave train, jointly decrease the rainfall forecast skill during the NAO active negative period. Therefore, the skillful model prediction of the active summer NAO could help predict mei-yu events in the East Asian summer monsoon, suggesting further model improvements to the S2S forecasting of summertime mid-latitude variations are urgently needed.
