Abstract We thank the team of Eli Lilly and Company for their critical appraisal of our study and for giving us the opportunity to clarify a number of points [1]. We agree with Kazda et al. that randomized clinical trials will best address any direct relationship between insulin analogues and cancer in man. We do not question the fact that tight control of blood glucose has dramatically advanced the lives of patients with diabetes. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract Hydroalumination of R-P(H)-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-tBu with bulky H-Al[CH(SiMe3)2]2 afforded the new P-H functionalized Al/P-based frustrated Lewis pair R-P(H)-C[[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-tBu]-AlR2 [R = CH(SiMe3)2; FLP 7]. A weak adduct of 7 with benzonitrile (8) was detected by NMR spectroscopy, but could not be isolated. tert-Butyl isocyanide afforded a similar, but isolable adduct (9), in which the isocyanide C atom was coordinated to aluminium. The unique reactivity of 7 became evident from its reactions with the heteroatom substituted nitriles PhO-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N, PhCH2S-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N and H8C4N-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N. Hydrophosphination of the C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N triple bonds afforded imines at room temperature which were coordinated to the FLP by Al-N and P-C bonds to yield AlCPCN heterocycles (10 to 12). These processes depend on substrate activation by the FLP. Diphenylcyclopropenone and its sulphur derivative reacted with 7 by addition of the P-H bond to a C-C bond of the strained C3 ring and ring opening to afford the fragment (Z)-Ph-C(H)[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Ph)-C-X-Al (X = O, S). The C-O or C-S groups were coordinated to the FLP to yield AlCPCX heterocycles (13 and 14). The thiocarbonyl derived compound 14 contains an internally stabilized phosphenium cation with a localized P[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond, a trigonal planar coordinated P atom and a short P[double bond, length as m-dash]C distance (168.9 pm). Insight into formation mechanisms, the structural and energetic properties of FLP 7 and compounds 13 and 14 was gained by quantum chemical DFT calculations.

Abstract Collisional activation of [M + H](+) parent ions from peptides of n amino acid residues may yield a rearrangement that involves loss of the C-terminal amino acid residue to produce (b(n-1) + H(2)O) daughters. We have studied this reaction by a retrospective examination of the m/z spectra of two collections of data. The first set comprised 398 peptides from coat protein digests of a number of plant viruses by various enzymes, where conditions in the tryptic digests were chosen so as to produce many missed cleavages. In this case, a large effect was observed-323 (b(n-1) + H(2)O) daughter ions (approximately 81%), including 185 (approximately 46%) "strong" decays with ratios (b(n-1) + H(2)O)/(b(n-1)) > 1. The second set comprised 1200 peptides, all from tryptic digests, which were carried out under more stringent conditions, resulting in relatively few missed cleavages. Even here, 190 (b(n-1) + H(2)O) ions (approximately 16%) were observed, including 87 (> 7%) "strong" decays, so the effect is still appreciable. The results suggest that the tendency for (b(n-1) + H(2)O) ion formation is promoted by the protonated side chain of a non-C-terminal basic amino acid residue, in the order arginine >> lysine > or = histidine, and that its (non-C-terminal) position is not critical. The results can be interpreted by a mechanism in which hydrogen bonding between the protonated side chain and the (n - 1) carbonyl oxygen facilitates loss of the C-terminal amino acid residue to give a product ion having a carboxyl group at the new C-terminus.

Abstract The H?kon Mosby Mud Volcano is a natural laboratory to study geological, geochemical, and ecological processes related to deep-water mud volcanism. High resolution bathymetry of the H?kon Mosby Mud Volcano was recorded during RV Polarstern expedition ARK-XIX/3 utilizing the multibeam system Hydrosweep DS-2. Dense spacing of the survey lines and slow ship speed (5 knots) provided necessary point density to generate a regular 10 m grid. Generalization was applied to preserve and represent morphological structures appropriately. Contour lines were derived showing detailed topography at the centre of the H?kon Mosby Mud Volcano and generalized contours in the vicinity. We provide a brief introduction to the H?kon Mosby Mud Volcano area and describe in detail data recording and processing methods, as well as the morphology of the area. Accuracy assessment was made to evaluate the reliability of a 10 m resolution terrain model. Multibeam sidescan data were recorded along with depth measurements and show reflectivity variations from light grey values at the centre of the H?kon Mosby Mud Volcano to dark grey values (less reflective) at the surrounding moat.
