    Abstract The gold standard was a monetary system based on fixed exchange rates, whereby domestic prices were pegged to the international price level and a high level of control had to be exercised over the money supply. This meant that fiscal discipline also had to be maintained for a country to remain on the gold standard. In times of crisis, countries had to leave the gold standard or use internal devaluation. This article seeks to gain an understanding of the role of the different economic policies in Italy and Spain at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century and how they were used in response to reductions in GDP. This article considers fiscal policy, monetary policy, and exchange rate policy estimating a VAR model. Results show how the exchange rate depreciation had positive effects on the Spanish economy during 1870–1913, while it only helped the Italian economy in specific periods to overcome crises. The expansive monetary policy was necessary for both countries to maintain public expenditure, which in turn allowed a smoothing of the GDP fluctuations. None of these policy options would have been available under the gold standard.

    Abstract Due to the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, e-learning suddenly spread to different levels of education, including university. In Spain, students of sports sciences are prepared during a 4-year study program to work in different areas (including physical education) and with different populations (including people with disabilities). The aims of this study were (1) to assess the effect of pandemic-driven online teaching on self-efficacy (SE) for the inclusion of people with disabilities in a group of university students enrolled in a compulsory course on adapted physical activity (APA); (2) compare the gains from SE before and after the APA course with a sample of students who followed the same course before the pandemic; and (3) explore the influence on SE scores according to three demographic variables: gender, previous SE training, and previous experience with people with disabilities.     Abstract Carbon-flow-regulator A (CfrA) adapts carbon flux to nitrogen conditions in non-diazotrophic cyanobacteria. Under nitrogen deficiency, CfrA leads to the storage of excess carbon, which cannot combine with nitrogen, mainly as glycogen. cfrA overexpression from the arsenite-inducible, nitrogen-independent ParsB promoter allows analysis of the metabolic effects of CfrA accumulation. Considering that the main consequence of cfrA overexpression is glycogen accumulation, we examined carbon distribution in response to cfrA expression in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 strains impaired in synthesizing this polymer. We carried out a comparative phenotypic analysis to evaluate cfrA overexpression in the wild-type strain and in a mutant of ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (ΔglgC), which is unable to synthesize glycogen. The accumulation of CfrA in the wild-type background caused a photosynthetic readjustment although growth was not affected. However, in a ΔglgC strain, growth decreased depending on CfrA accumulation and photosynthesis was severely affected. An elemental analysis of the H, C, and N content of cells revealed that cfrA expression in the wildtype caused an increase in the C/N ratio, due to decreased nitrogen assimilation. Metabolomic study indicated that these cells store sucrose and glycosylglycerol, in addition to the previously described glycogen accumulation. However, cells deficient in glycogen synthesis accumulated large amounts of Calvin-Benson cycle intermediates as cfrA was expressed. These cells also showed increased levels of some amino acids, mainly alanine, serine, valine, isoleucine and leucine. The findings suggest that by controlling cfrA expression, in different conditions and strains, we could change the distribution of fixed carbon, with potential biotechnological benefits.

    Abstract Background: There is little information on the feasibility and benefit of therapeutic exercise (TE) in women with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). The aim of this article is to describe the implementation of a TE intervention in MBC patients, and to determine the recruitment, compliance and improvement in outcomes after its completion.
    Methods: The "Therapeutic Exercise program in MBC" (TEP-MBC) consists of 1 h of individualized TE supervised by a physiotherapist in a group format, consisting of four groups of seven to eight participants. TEP-MBC was delivered twice a week, lasting 12 weeks (22 sessions), with patients considered to have completed the program when attending at least 17 sessions (>75% attendance). After referral, patients underwent a clinical interview and a physical and functional assessment. This information was complemented with patient-reported outcomes. Data about referral, compliance and assessment were collected.
    Results: Only 11 of the 30 patients completed the program. Drop-out was mainly related to personal issues and symptoms arising from the disease or treatment. All patients who completed the program improved cancer-related fatigue and increased their functional parameters.
    Conclusions: The TEP-MBC was safe and feasible in patients with MBC, although with low compliance. The high variability in baseline measures reflects the heterogeneous level of function.

    Abstract Breast cancer survivors (BCS) may face functional alterations after surgical intervention. Upper Limb Disorders (ULDs) are highly prevalent even years after a diagnosis. Clinicians may assess the upper limbs after breast cancer. The Upper Limb Functional Index (ULFI) has been validated across different populations and languages. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Upper Limb Functional Index Spanish version (ULFI-Sp) in the BCS.
    Methods: A psychometric validation study of the ULFI-Sp was conducted on 216 voluntary breast cancer survivors. The psychometric properties were as follows: analysis of the factor structure by maximum likelihood extraction (MLE), internal consistency, and construct validity by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).
    Results: The factor structure was one-dimensional. ULFI-Sp showed a high internal consistency for the total score (α = 0.916) and the regression score obtained from MLE (α = 0.996). CFA revealed a poor fit, and a new 14-item model (short version) was further tested. The developed short version of the ULFI-SP is preferable to assess upper limb function in Spanish BCS.
    Conclusions: Given the high prevalence of ULD in this population and the broader versions of ULFI across different languages, this study's results may be transferred to clinical practice and integrated as part of upper limb assessment after breast cancer.

    Abstract Introduction/background: Breast cancer survivors (BCS) frequently show upper limb dysfunctions. The forearm muscle activity measured by surface electromyography (sEMG) in this population has not been studied. This study aimed to describe forearm muscle activity in BCS, as well as to assess its possible relationship with other variables related to upper limb functionality and cancer-related fatigue (CRF).
    Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out including 102 BCS as volunteers at a secondary care in Malaga, Spain. BCS were included if they were aged between 32 and 70 years old, without evidence of cancer recurrence at the time of recruitment. The forearm muscle activity (microvolts, µV) was assessed by sEMG during the handgrip test. The handgrip strength was assessed by dynamometry (kg), the upper limb functionality (%) was measured by the upper limb functional index (ULFI) questionnaire and the CRF was also assessed by revised Piper Fatigue Scale (0-10 points).
    Results: BCS reported reduced forearm muscle activity (287.88 µV) and reduced handgrip strength (21.31 Kg), a good upper limb functionality (68.85%), and a moderate cancer-related fatigue (4.74). Forearm muscle activity showed a poor significant correlation (r = -0.223, P = .038) with the CRF. Handgrip strength showed a poor correlation with the upper limb functionality (r = 0.387, P < .001) and age (r=-0.200, P = .047).
    Conclusion: BCS showed a reduced forearm muscle activity. BCS also presented a poor correlation between forearm muscle activity and handgrip strength. Both outcomes tended to lower values with higher levels of CRF, while preserving a good upper limb functionality.

    Abstract Adults with tetraparesis cerebral palsy (i.e., wheelchair users) tend to experience more accelerated ageing, resulting in physical deterioration that increases the impact of the disability, leading to a loss of mobility that interferes with people's daily activities and participation in the community. The aim of this work is to study the relationship between trunk control and the function of the less-affected arm in this population. For this purpose, 41 para-athletes were invited to participate in this study, performing five tests to assess upper limb coordination, two tests to assess manual dexterity [i.e., Box and Block Test (BBT) and Box and Ball Test (BBLT)] and three tests to assess intra-limb coordination in different planes. Trunk control was assessed in both static and dynamic sitting conditions. The results show moderate correlations between static postural control and manual dexterity tests in the BBT (

    Abstract Stakeholder participation in natural resource management has spread widely, even to nondemocracies, driven by expectations of beneficial outcomes such as multidirectional learning. However, can we expect participation to be equally effective in achieving multidirectional learning in democracies and nondemocracies? Unsurprisingly, previous studies indicate the relevance of power distribution for learning. Higher levels of repression and accumulation of political capital in nondemocracies should limit the distribution of power across stakeholders. Yet, the relationship between political regime, participation, and learning has rarely been studied empirically. I address this gap by analysing multidirectional learning in stakeholder participation in 81 Man and the Biosphere reserves across 35 countries using ordinary least squares regression, Firth logistic regression, and heat maps. The results suggest that the amount of stakeholders sharing knowledge and learning is similar in both regimes. However, a closer analysis reveals differences in the impact different stakeholders have on the learning process. More concretely, local actors share knowledge more often and have a greater impact on stakeholders’ learning in democracies, while state actors display similar behavior across regimes in terms of learning and sharing knowledge. Thus, although there are notable similarities across regimes, multidirectional learning through stakeholder participation is influenced by the political context.
