Abstract Gastrointestinal (GI) infection by intestinal pathogens poses great threats to human health, and the therapeutic use of antibiotics has reached a bottleneck due to drug resistance. The developments of antimicrobial peptides produced by beneficial bacteria have drawn attention by virtue of effective, safe, and not prone to developing resistance. Though bacteriocin as antimicrobial agent in gut infection has been intensively investigated and reviewed, reviews on that of bacteriocin-producing beneficial microbes are very rare. It is important to explicitly state the prospect of bacteriocin-producing microbes in prevention of gastrointestinal infection towards their application in host. This review discusses the potential of gut as an appropriate resource for mining targeted bacteriocin-producing microbes. Then, host-related factors affecting the bacteriocin production and activity of bacteriocin-producing microbes in the gut are summarized. Accordingly, the multiple mechanisms (direct inhibition and indirect inhibition) behind the preventive effects of bacteriocin-producing microbes on gut infection are discussed. Finally, we propose several targeted strategies for the manipulation of bacteriocin-producing beneficial microbes to improve their performance in antimicrobial outcomes. We anticipate an upcoming emergence of developments and applications of bacteriocin-producing beneficial microbes as antimicrobial agent in gut infection induced by pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract Background: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a disease with a high disability rate, and genetic factors are closely related to its pathogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the possible correlation between ESR1 and APOE gene polymorphisms and the risk of ONFH.
Methods: In this case-control study, the potential association between three genetic variants (rs2982573 C < T, rs10872678 C < T, and rs9322332 A < C) of the ESR1 gene and two genetic variants (rs7259620 A < G and rs769446 C < T) of the APOE gene with the risk of ONFH was investigated. Correlations between gene polymorphisms and ONFH risk were assessed using logistic regression analysis, with calculation of odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
Results: The overall analysis demonstrated that rs9322332 in the ESR1 gene exhibited a correlation with a decreased risk of ONFH under the homozygous (AA vs.CC: OR = 0.69, 95% CI [0.53-0.90], p = 0.006), dominant (CA + AA vs. CC: OR = 0.70, 95% CI [0.54-0.90], p = 0.006), and additive (OR = 0.79, 95% CI [0.66-0.95], p = 0.013) models. The stratification analysis revealed that rs9322332 was linked to a lower risk of ONFH in subgroups characterized by individuals aged over 51 years and non-smokers. Nevertheless, there were no notable correlations found between ESR1 rs2982573 and rs10872678, as well as APOE rs7259620 and rs769446, with the risk of ONFH.
Conclusion: ESR1-rs9322332 is closely linked to a decreased risk of ONFH, thereby enhancing our understanding of the relationship between gene polymorphisms and ONFH.

Abstract The gut microbiome is related to many major human diseases, and it is of great significance to study the structure of the gut microbiome under different conditions. Multivariate statistics or pattern recognition methods were often used to identify different structural patterns in gut microbiome data. However, these methods have some limitations. Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) datasets were taken as an example. Due to the physical lack or insufficient sampling of the gut microbiome in the sequencing process, the microbiome data contains many zeros. Therefore, the geometric mean of pairwise ratios (GMPR) was used to normalize gut microbiome data, then Spectrum was used to analyze the structure of the gut microbiome, and lastly, the structure of core microflora was compared with Network analysis. GMPR calculates the Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), whose reproducibility was significantly better than other normalization methods. In addition, running-time, Normalized Mutual Information (NMI), Davies-Boulding Index (DBI), and Calinski-Harabasz index (CH) of GMPR+Spectrum were far superior to other clustering algorithms such as M3C, iClusterPlus. GMPR+Spectrum can not only perform better but also effectively identify the structural differences of intestinal microbiota in different patients and excavate the unique critical bacteria such as Akkermansia , and Lactobacillus in MHE patients, which may provide a new reference for the study of the gut microbiome in disease.

Abstract To investigate the effects of seven starches made from different crop sources on noodle quality, Chinese dried noodles made from various reconstituted flours were prepared and analysed. Potato starch had better solubility and swelling power than the other starches, leading to higher water absorption, cooking loss and breakage ratio of the potato starch noodles. The correlation results unravelled that the cooking breakage ratio of noodles presented positive correlations with solubility, swelling power, peak viscosity (PV), trough viscosity (TV) and final viscosity (FV) values of starches. Besides, the adhesiveness of noodles showed a positive correlation with conclusion temperature (Tc) and setback viscosity (SV) values of starches. Moreover, the peak temperature (Tₚ) value of starches was negatively correlated with cooking loss; the granule size of starches had a positive correlation with noodles water absorption; and the peak time (PkT) value of starches represented positive relationships with noodles chewiness, shearing force and breaking strength.

Abstract Hepatic fibrosis is an important pathological manifestation of chronic schistosome infection. Patients with advanced schistosomiasis show varying degrees of abnormalities in liver fibrosis indicators and bilirubin metabolism. However, the relationship between hepatic fibrosis in schistosomiasis and dysregulated bilirubin metabolism remains unclear. In this study, we observed a positive correlation between total bilirubin levels and the levels of ALT, AST, LN, and CIV in patients with advanced schistosomiasis. Additionally, we established mouse models at different time points following
