Abstract Background: Offspring of parents with affective disorders (OAD) are at risk of developing a wide range of mental disorders. Deficits in the rearing environment and high levels of stress are well-known risk factors for negative outcomes in OAD. Building on prior research, we aim to examine the longitudinal relationships between family dysfunction, stressful life events, and mental health in OAD and control offspring of parents with no affective disorder. In the present study, we hypothesized that high levels of family dysfunction would be associated with more internalizing and externalizing problems across time in OAD than in controls, and that family dysfunction would mediate the relationship between stressful life events in adolescence and poor mental health in adulthood, particularly in OAD.
Methods: As part of the TRacking Adolescents' Lives Survey (TRAILS), 2230 participants (51% female, M
Results: Multi-group structured equation modeling revealed that family dysfunction was linked to internalizing and externalizing problems in OAD, but not controls, across time. Risk status did not moderate family dysfunction's mediation of the relationship between stressful life events and negative outcomes in adulthood.
Conclusions: OAD show high sensitivity to dysfunction in the rearing environment across childhood and adolescence, which supports the use of family based interventions to prevent the development of mental disorders in high-risk youth.

Abstract Arceuthobium azoricum Wiens & Hawksw. is a rare Azorean endemic epiphytic hemiparasite (mistletoe), that typically parasitizes branches of the gymnosperm Juniperus brevifolia (Hochst. ex Seub.) Antoine (Cupressaceae), also an Azorean endemic. Here we describe one population of A. azoricum, on Pico Island, parasitizing Erica azorica Hochst. ex Seub (Ericaceae) also an Azores endemic. Our molecular analysis (using nuclear ribosomal ITS) showed no differences between individuals parasitizing Erica and Juniperus. Moreover, a preliminary analysis showed no differences in morphological characters between accessions sampled from the different hosts. Given that this is the first bona fide record of Arceuthobium parasitizing an angiosperm, this population represents a unique host shifting event and its conservation is important because it may allow new insights into host recognition mechanisms in mistletoes. Immediate attention should be given to characterize this Pico Island population using appropriate molecular methods and additional morphological analyses.

Abstract A claw bed inverted squamous papilloma (ISP) presented clinically as a swollen digit in a dog. Canine papillomavirus (CPV) type 2 was amplified by PCR and localised to the papilloma's epidermis using in situ hybridisation. This is the first report demonstrating a claw bed ISP caused by CPV.

Abstract Objectives: Determine the association of high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) values with inpatient mortality and other outcomes in older veterans hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Methods: This was a retrospective, multicenter, cohort study of hospitalized adults, with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection who were studied for 1 year after discharge or until death. The NLR was categorized into tertiles, and we determined frailty status with the 31-item Veterans Affairs Frailty Index. Multivariate logistic regression and adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were performed to assess the association between NLR and clinical outcomes.
Results: The study included 615 hospitalized adult veterans, mean age 66.12 (standard deviation 14.79) years, 93.82% (n = 577) male, 57.56% (n = 354) White, 81.0% (n = 498) non-Hispanic, median body mass index of 30.70 (interquartile range 25.64-34.99, standard deviation 7.13), and median length of stay of 8 days (interquartile range 3-15). Individuals in the middle and upper tertile groups had higher inpatient mortality (8.37%, n = 17 and 18.36%, n = 38, respectively) as compared with the lower tertile (2.93%, n = 6,
Conclusions: The NLR score is a clinically useful tool to predict in-hospital mortality in older patients with COVID-19.

Abstract In January 2024, a child was diagnosed with measles in a paediatric hospital in Lisbon. Of 123 contacts, 39 (32%) were not fully immunised, presenting a risk for a potential outbreak. The public health unit initiated control measures and identified challenges during the response, such as the lack of interoperability between information systems and accessing vaccination records. The lessons learned prompted changes to national contact tracing procedures for measles, further strengthening Portugal's preparedness.

Abstract Respiratory screening assays lacking Sample Adequacy Controls (SAC) may result in inadequate sample quality and thus false negative results. The non-adequate samples might represent a significant proportion of the total performed tests, thus resulting in sub-optimal infection control measures with implications that may be critical during pandemic times. The quantitative sample adequacy threshold can be established empirically, measuring the change in the frequency of positive results, as a function of the numerical value of "sample adequacy". Establishing a quantitative threshold for SAC requires a big number/volume of tests to be analyzed in order to have a statistically valid result. Herein, we are offering for the first time clear clinical evidence that a subset of results, which did not pass minimal sample adequacy criteria, have a significantly lower frequency of positivity compared with the "adequate" samples. Flagging these results and/or re-sampling them is a mitigation strategy, which can dramatically improve infection control measures.

Abstract Sample Adequacy Control (SAC) has critical analytical, clinical and epidemiological value that increases confidence in a negative test result. The SAC is an integral qPCR assay control, which ensures that all pre-analytical and analytical steps are adequate for accurate testing and reporting. As such, a negative SAC with a negative result on pathogen screen specifies that the result should be reported as inconclusive instead of negative. Despite this, many regulatory approved tests do not incorporate SAC into their assay design. Herein, we emphasize the universal value of SAC and offer for the first time, a simple technical strategy to introduce non-competitive SAC which does not interfere with the limit of detection for the screened pathogen. Integration of SAC can provide key benefits towards identifying, isolating, quarantining and contact tracing infected individuals and in turn can improve worldwide efforts in infection control.

Abstract Objectives: Determine the association of higher FI-LAB scores, derived from common laboratory values and vital signs, with hospital and post-hospital outcomes in Veterans hospitalized with COVID-19 infection.
Design, setting, and participants: A retrospective, multicenter, cohort study of 7 Veterans Health Administration (VHA) medical centers in Florida and Puerto Rico. Patients aged 18 years and older hospitalized with COVID-19 and followed for up to 1 year post discharge or until death. Clinical Frailty Measure: FI-LAB.
Main outcomes and measures: Hospital and post-hospital outcomes.
Results: Of the 671 eligible patients, 615 (91.5%) patients were included (mean [SD] age, 66.1 [14.8] years; 577 men [93.8%]; median stay, 8 days [IQR:3-15]. There were sixty-one in-hospital deaths. Veterans in the moderate and high FI-LAB groups had a higher proportion of inpatient mortality (13.3% and 20.6%, respectively) than the low group (4.1%), p <0.001. Moderate and high FI-LAB scores were associated with greater inpatient mortality when compared to the low group, OR:3.22 (95%CI:1.59-6.54), p=.001 and 6.05 (95%CI:2.48-14.74), p<0.001, respectively. Compared with low FI-LAB scores, moderate and high scores were also associated with prolonged length of stay, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and transfer.
Conclusions and relevance: In this study of patients admitted to 7 VHA Hospitals during the first surge of the pandemic, higher FI-LAB scores were associated with higher in-hospital mortality and other in-hospital outcomes; FI-LAB can serve as a validated, rapid, feasible, and objective frailty tool in hospitalized adults with COVID-19 that can aid clinical care.
