Abstract This study tests whether economic value added (EVA) as a performance evaluation metric incentivizes public administrators to increase the performance of public organizations. It utilizes data from Wind Info Database (WIND) and finds that the adoption of EVA as a performance evaluation metric incentivizes public administrators to increase the overall efficiency of the public organizations under study. The study suggests that public administrators make prudent investment and operating decisions after the adoption of EVA as their performance evaluation metric, thereby increasing the overall organizational performance. Using 2274 firm-year observations for the period from 2009 to 2010 in China, this paper uses first-difference change analysis methodology that takes care of firm-level unobservable heterogeneities and addresses endogeneity concerns, thereby producing robust results. The change analysis setting has been used in prior studies to find the effect of certain treatment (e.g., Lyons et al. 2001; Kerr et al. 2006; Pal and Pohit 2014). Lyons et al. (2001) argue that the change analysis focuses on studying differences before and after services (i.e., the presence and absence of treatment) that are received. In our research design, the treatment is adoption of EVA by the SASAC, which occurred in year 2010.

Abstract The incidence of both obesity and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is rising globally. The influence of bariatric metabolic surgery (BMS) upon IBD development is largely unknown. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the relationship between BMS and the risk of de novo IBD development following surgery. A systematic literature search and meta-analysis were performed using PubMed and Scopus databases. Inclusion criteria were any study reporting risk of de novo IBD development following BMS relative to an appropriate control cohort. Pooled odds ratios (POR) were calculated. A total of 31 articles were identified by the literature search. Four studies including 149,385 patients met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled estimation of a meta-analysis of risk ratios studies demonstrated a POR for the development of IBD following BMS of 1.17 (95% CI, 1.06-1.29). This indicates a 17% increase in relative risk of de novo IBD development for those patients receiving BMS compared to those treated by non-surgical methods. Based on the present data, there appears to be an association between BMS and risk of de novo IBD. Compared to the proven benefits of BMS on other aspects of patient health, this potential risk remains proportionally low but may be an important consideration for patients both pre- and post-operatively.

Abstract Bureaucracy is an age-old form of government that has survived since ancient times; it has provided order and persisted with durability, dependability, and stability. The popularity of the first edition of this book, entitled Handbook of Bureaucracy, is testimony to the endurance of bureaucratic institutions. Reflecting the accelerated globalization of corporate capitalism, cultures, and governance systems and the additional complexity in the tasks of public administrators, Bureaucracy and Administration presents a comprehensive, global perspective that highlights the dramatic changes of the l

Abstract Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), as a member of the interleukin-6 cytokine family, plays a complex role in solid tumors. However, the effect of LIF as a tumor microenvironment factor on plasticity control in breast cancer remains largely unknown. In this study, an in vitro investigation is conducted to determine the crosstalk between breast cancer cells and fibroblasts. Based on the results, cancer-associated fibroblasts are producers of LIF in the cocultivation system with breast cancer cells. Treatment with the CAF-CM and human LIF protein significantly promoted stemness through the dedifferentiation process and regaining of stem-cell-like properties. In addition, the results indicate that activation of LIFR signaling in breast cancer cells in the existence of CAF-secreted LIF can induce

In addition, the results indicate that activation of LIFR signaling in breast cancer cells in the existence of CAF-secreted LIF can induce Nanog and Oct4 expression and increase breast cancer stem cell markers CD24−/CD44+. In contrast, suppression of the LIF receptor by human LIF receptor inhibition antibody decreased the cancer stem cell markers. We found that LIF was frequently overexpressed by CAFs and that LIF expression is necessary for dedifferentiation of breast cancer cell phenotype and regaining of cancer stem cell properties. Our results suggest that targeting LIF/LIFR signaling might be a potent therapeutic strategy for breast cancer and the prevention of tumor recurrence.

Abstract Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition that causes progressive inflammation. It seems that alternations in epigenetic modifications contribute to RA development. The present study aimed to assess the expression pattern of K (lysine) acetyltransferase 1 (KAT1; HAT1) and lysine acetyltransferase 2B (KAT2B; PCAF), and the establishment of sister chromatid cohesion N-acetyltransferase 2 (ESCO2) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from RA patients.
Method and material: In this case-control study, we studied 50 cases with RA in comparison to 50 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects. Separation of PBMCs samples from whole blood, extraction of RNA, and reverse transcription were performed. Gene transcript levels of KAT1, KAT2B, and ESCO2 were determined using SYBR green real-time quantitative PCR.
Results: Our results exhibited a significant upregulation in the expression levels of ESCO2 and KAT2B genes in patients with RA compared to normal individuals (P-value < 0.0001). Similarly, we observed higher expression of KAT1 in the patients' group when compared to the healthy controls, although the difference in expression level failed to show any significant changes (P-value = 0.485). Also, we found a positive correlation between ESCO2 and the level of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in patients.
Conclusion: Collectively, our results suggest that upregulated expression of KAT2B and ESCO2 genes may be correlated to RA development. Further studies with larger sample sizes are required for understanding the potential contribution of these enzymes in the pathology of RA. Key Points • Dysregulated expression level of epigenetics enzymes was observed in PBMCs from RA patients. • The expression of KAT2B was 2.44 times higher in the PBMCs of RA patients than in the healthy subjects. • The expression of ESCO2 was upregulated (2.75 times) in the PBMCs of RA patients compared to the control group. • There was a positive correlation between ESCO2 expression and the ESR level in patients.
