Abstract Rural populations are unique compared to their urban and suburban counterparts in relation to both healthcare mindsets and spiritual needs. Rural populations tend to be more religious, more accepting of death, and less likely to pursue aggressive care at the end-of-life. This research project looked at the utilization of chaplaincy services among a rural, southwestern hospice population. It also examined outcomes related to patient and family satisfaction surrounding spiritual themes. Results were compared to 1700 other hospice programs. Areas where there were significant statistical differences from benchmarks were highlighted. It appears that overall hospice satisfaction and assistance with feelings of sadness and anxiety could be related to increased spiritual utilization.

Abstract This article describes a software tool called "Pursuit" that is intended to be used for both research and teaching on the topic of optimal foraging theory. The tool provides a dynamic graphical and auditory interface in which users encounter different prey animals and then must decide whether to pursue or ignore the encountered prey. Based on the characteristics of the prey in the foraging environment and the decisions of the player, each user harvests a set of prey per round and achieves a corresponding foraging return rate. Administrators of Pursuit specify the environmental parameters that determine what prey users will encounter. All environmental parameters and user decisions are tracked and logged for analysis. We created this tool for laboratory experiments, but we believe Pursuit could also be an engaging and effective teaching tool, whereby students adopt the role of forager, and through such play, experience a simulated foraging context and learn about foraging theory. Pursuit is freely available and can run on any platform that supports Java, including Mac OS, Windows, and Linux.

Abstract Plant diseases cause famines, drive human migration, and present challenges to agricultural sustainability as pathogen ranges shift under climate change. Plant breeders discovered Mendelian genetic loci conferring disease resistance to specific pathogen isolates over 100 years ago. Subsequent breeding for disease resistance underpins modern agriculture and, along with the emergence and focus on model plants for genetics and genomics research, has provided rich resources for molecular biological exploration over the last 50 years. These studies led to the identification of extracellular and intracellular receptors that convert recognition of extracellular microbe-encoded molecular patterns or intracellular pathogen-delivered virulence effectors into defense activation. These receptor systems, and downstream responses, define plant immune systems that have evolved since the migration of plants to land ∼500 million years ago. Our current understanding of plant immune systems provides the platform for development of rational resistance enhancement to control the many diseases that continue to plague crop production.

Abstract Lobsters and crayfish in Australasia can develop a condition known as Tail Fan Necrosis (TFN syndrome). Many attempts have been made to find a primary pathogen or link the syndrome to commercial activities, but a solution remains elusive. TFN syndrome is a 'wicked problem', a problem difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete and contradictory information forming a matrix of potential outcomes with no simple solution. Reviewing the literature shows TFN syndrome is sometimes reported to develop in association with sterile blisters on the telson and uropods which may rupture permitting invasion by environmental fungal and/or bacterial flora. Whether blisters form prior to, or because of, infection is unknown. TFN syndrome sometimes develops in captivity, sometimes requires a previous insult to the telson and uropods, and prevalence is patchy in the wild. The literature shows the cause of blisters associated with TFN syndrome remains an enigma, for which we suggest several possible initiating factors. We strongly urge that researchers not 'jump to conclusions' as to the aetiology of TFN syndrome. It cannot be explained without carefully exploring alternative aetiologies whilst being cognisant of the age-old lesson that 'correlation does not equal causation'.

  10. Article ; Online: Exploring the preparedness of newly qualified general practitioners for independent practice in Ireland.

Abstract Background: Newly qualified general practitioners' (NQGPs) experiences of transition to independent practice are varied. Most Irish GP graduates see themselves as either assistant GPs, salaried GPs or locum GPs one year post-qualification, yet anticipate partnership ten years post-qualification. Research into GP trainees' transition to independent practice is scarce, yet perceived lack of preparedness can be associated with emotional exhaustion and burnout.
Aims: To explore NQGPs experience of their transition to independent practice in Ireland.
Methods: A qualitative approach was taken, using virtual, semi-structured, one-to-one interviews with NQGPs within five years of graduation, practising in Ireland. Descriptive demographics of participants were obtained. Audio recordings of interviews were analysed using thematic analysis.
Results: NQGPs reported preparedness for their clinical role, but most did not feel prepared for their non-clinical role. While NQGPs regarded independent practice as an intensive step-up from GP training, they drew on the support of GP colleagues during this transition. The decision on job selection centred largely on practice factors including location, ethos, support, and career prospects. Participants continued to develop in their identity as a GP within this transitionary period.
Conclusion: This research provides a unique insight into the experiences of NQGPs in Ireland. Specialist GP training schemes are influential in how NQGPs perceive their preparedness for independent practice; however, external factors including  their place of work and alignment of professional goals play a part in this stage of NQGPs career.
