Abstract Career expectations contribute to job satisfaction and worker persistence. The tourism industry is characterized by high staff turnover. The industry was decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic causing widespread unemployment and transforming working conditions, while radically altering educational conditions for hospitality and tourism students. We assessed how the pandemic influenced students' expectations, comparing undergraduate opinions before and during the pandemic. While Pandemic-Students were more pessimistic about working conditions, they revealed an increased desire to provide personal interactive service and a greater tendency towards entrepreneurialism. These results contrast with previous research; highlighting students' resilience and suggesting a positive vision of pandemic-related opportunities.

Abstract In recent decades, the impositions of environmental sustainability have resulted in severe challenges for the tourism sector. It is not enough to make tourist destinations greener and more circular. It is necessary to encourage pro-sustainable behavior among tourists. This research aims to explore the role of available reliable information on the sustainability of destinations in relation to the pro-sustainable habits of tourists and to investigate changes in tourist behavior related to travel and tourism. In addition, it aims to assess the influence of tourists’ pro-sustainable habits on changes in their behavior regarding travel and tourism. For this, a sample of 25,711 residents in Europe-27 were considered, collected through the Flash Eurobarometer 499 database (attitudes of Europeans against tourism, autumn 2021) by GESIS—Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences. A quantitative analysis was performed using the Partial Least Square method. The results reveal that the available reliable information on the sustainability of destinations positively influences the adoption of pro-sustainable travel and tourism habits and changes in tourist behavior, guiding them towards pro-sustainable travel and tourism preferences. Furthermore, pro-sustainable travel and tourism habits positively influence pro-sustainable changes in tourist behavior. This study provides accurate and accessible information on the sustainability of destinations, promoting pro-sustainable travel and tourism habits and encouraging the adoption of conscious behavior during travel to work towards a more sustainable tourism industry, which is responsible in regard to the environment and to local communities.

Abstract Background: Women in Mozambique are often disempowered when it comes to making decisions concerning their lives, including their bodies and reproductive options. This study aimed to explore the views of women in Mozambique about key elements of empowerment for reproductive decisions and the meanings they attach to these elements.
Methods: Qualitative in-depth interviews were undertaken with 64 women of reproductive age (18-49 years) in two provinces in Mozambique. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling. Data collection took place between February and March 2020 in Maputo city and Province, and during August 2020 in Nampula Province. A thematic analysis was performed.
Results: Women described crucial elements of how power is exerted for reproductive choices. These choices include the ability to plan the number and timing of pregnancies and the ability either to negotiate with sexual partners by voicing choice and influencing decisions, or to exercise their right to make decisions independently. They considered that women with empowerment had characteristics such as independence, active participation and being free. These characteristics are recognized key enablers for the process of women's empowerment.
Conclusions: This study's findings contribute to an expanded conceptualization and operationalization of women's sexual and reproductive empowerment by unveiling key elements that need to be considered in future research and approaches to women's empowerment. Furthermore, it gave women the central role and voice in the research of empowerment's conceptualization and measurement where women's views and meanings are seldom considered.

Abstract Gliomas are primary malignant brain tumors with poor survival and high resistance to available treatments. Improving the molecular understanding of glioma and disclosing novel biomarkers of tumor development and progression could help to find novel targeted therapies for this type of cancer. Public databases such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) provide an invaluable source of molecular information on cancer tissues. Machine learning tools show promise in dealing with the high dimension of omics data and extracting relevant information from it. In this work, network inference and clustering methods, namely Joint Graphical lasso and Robust Sparse K-means Clustering, were applied to RNA-sequencing data from TCGA glioma patients to identify shared and distinct gene networks among different types of glioma (glioblastoma, astrocytoma, and oligodendroglioma) and disclose new patient groups and the relevant genes behind groups' separation. The results obtained suggest that astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma have more similarities compared with glioblastoma, highlighting the molecular differences between glioblastoma and the others glioma subtypes. After a comprehensive literature search on the relevant genes pointed our from our analysis, we identified potential candidates for biomarkers of glioma. Further molecular validation of these genes is encouraged to understand their potential role in diagnosis and in the design of novel therapies.

Abstract Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) present a higher risk of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality compared with the general population. While there are several well-established traditional CV risk factors, few studies have addressed novel potential risk factors such as α-Klotho, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and lean mass.
Methods: This was an observational, prospective, single-center, cohort study that included prevalent hemodialysis (online hemodiafiltration) adult patients. By univariate logistic regression models, univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models, and Kaplan-Meier analysis, we evaluated the association between the levels of α-Klotho, ADMA and lean mass, with the risk of peripheral vascular disease (PVD), CV events and all-cause mortality in these patients.
Results: A total of 200 HD patients was included. We found that increased levels of log-α-Klotho were significantly associated with decreased odds of both PVD [odds ratio (OR) 0.521, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.270-0.954,
Conclusions: Novel long-term clinical associations were generated that support α-Klotho and lean mass as novel CV risk factors in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract Severe secondary hyperparathyroidism in advanced stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with CKD-related mineral and bone disease (CKD-MBD). A 70-year-old woman was admitted at the Hospital for generalized bone pain and peripheral edema. Initial laboratory tests revealed normocytic anemia and severe renal dysfunction, and further tests evidenced severe secondary hyperparathyroidism. Full-body computerized tomography showed an osteolytic lesion in the right iliac wing. The iliac bone lesion was biopsied and histological examination was consistent with the diagnosis of a brown tumor of hyperparathyroidism. Brown tumors are a rare variant of osteitis fibrosa cystica that results from sustained high levels of parathyroid hormone in CKD. This case sheds light on rare complications that are experienced today in CKD. The clinical and biochemical setting, as well as the clinical suspicion, are essential to the diagnosis.

Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of end-organ damage in hypertensive patients attending an outpatient consultation.
Materials and methods: Patients were selected from an outpatient consultation at a tertiary hospital care center. All patients who consulted between July 2022 and March 2023 were included. Data on demographic characteristics, blood pressure records, hypertension etiology, medication use, and the presence of target organ damage were collected.
Results: A total of 73 patients were included in the study, with 34 patients being male (46.6%) and 39 patients being female (53.4%). The mean age of the patients was 49.8 years. Among the cases of hypertension, 14 (19.2%) were classified as secondary arterial hypertension (AH). The most common cause of secondary AH was obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) (42.9%). Approximately 23.2% of patients had documented end-organ damage potentially related to hypertension, with kidney disease being the most frequent (n = 10, 13.7%). The most commonly prescribed pharmacological classes were angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists (n = 46, 63%).
Conclusion: Despite numerous studies and trials on arterial hypertension, it remains a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality, necessitating the continued awareness of its long-term implications.

Abstract Introduction: The LEAN methodology is an integration of methods and tools developed in the 90s in the industrial sector. It aims to reduce waste (things that don't add value to the final product), add worth and work towards continuous quality improvement.
Methods: LEAN tools to improve the clinical practice of a health center include:5S methodology: helps organize, clean, develop and maintain a productive work environment;'Spaghetti' diagram: displays the movement and distance that a given element has to travel throughout the entire process; andTime and motion studies: measure the various times associated with the process and the associated motion.
Results: The LEAN methodology made it possible to manage space and time efficiently and optimally. There was a substantial reduction in both the time and number of trips for not only the health professionals but also for the patients.
Discussion: Clinical practice should focus on the permission of continuous quality improvement. The LEAN methodology, through its different tools, generates an increase in productivity and profitability. It promotes teamwork through multidisciplinary teams and the empowerment and training of employees. The implementation of the LEAN methodology improved the practices and strengthened the team spirit based on everyone's participation, because the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
