    Abstract Background: According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis (TB) ranks among the top 10 causes of death worldwide. The significance of TB during pregnancy lies in its symptoms, which can be mistaken for physiological changes associated with pregnancy. This confusion can lead to maternal-perinatal complications.
    Objective: To evaluate the association between pulmonary TB in pregnancy and adverse neonatal outcomes in two Peruvian hospitals.
    Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. The target population consisted of pregnant women with and without pulmonary TB whose deliveries were attended at two public hospitals, located in Lima, Peru. The adverse neonatal outcomes were prematurity, low birth weight (LBW), and being small for gestational age (SGA). Crude and adjusted relative risks (RRa) were calculated with their respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI).
    Results: Information from 212 patients was analyzed; 48.1% had TB during pregnancy, and 23.1% had adverse neonatal outcomes (8%, 11.3%, and 12.3% for LBW, prematurity, and SGA, respectively). In the adjusted model, pregnant women with pulmonary TB had a 3.52 times higher risk of having a newborn with at least one of the adverse outcomes than those who were not exposed (aRR, 3.52; 95%CI: 1.93-6.68).
    Conclusion: Pulmonary TB in pregnancy was jointly and independently associated with adverse neonatal outcomes, including LBW, prematurity, and being SGA.

    Abstract Objective: To evaluate the prognostic performance of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) for mortality in patients with acute stroke treated at a Peruvian hospital.
    Design: Retrospective cohort study.
    Setting: Tertiary care hospital.
    Patients: Patients aged ≥18 years with a diagnosis of acute stroke and admitted to the hospital from May 2019 to June 2021.
    Interventions: None.
    Main variables of interests: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and mortality.
    Results: A total of 165 patients were included. The mean age was 66.1±14.2 years, and 59.4% were male. Only NLR had a performance superior to 0.7 (AUC: 0.75; 95%CI: 0.65-0.85), and its elevated levels were associated with an increased risk of mortality (aRR: 3.66; 95%CI: 1.77-8.85) after adjusting for confounders.
    Conclusion: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio has an acceptable prognostic performance for mortality in patients with acute stroke. Its use may be considered to stratify patients' risk and to consider timely alternative care and management.

    Abstract Congenital divided melanocytic nevi of the upper and lower eyelid are rare pigmented changes of the eyelids. These processes are also known as "kissing nevi," "panda nevi," and "split ocular nevi," and were first described by Fuchs in 1919. About 120 cases have been described in the literature so far. Congenital melanocytic nevi are either present at birth (small nevi are already found in about 1% of neonates) or manifest predominantly during the first decade of life. These rare melanocytic changes of the eyelids should be controlled regularly, as malignant transformation can occur. The actual incidence of malignant transformation is highly variable in the literature, ranging from 2 to 40% depending on the duration of follow-up, with an average of 14% for the whole lifetime. Moreover, nevi of the eyelids may be considered cosmetically disturbing and cause functional problems. Therapeutic removal (dermabrasion, cryotherapy, laser therapy, and surgical excision with ophthalmoplastic reconstruction) is rarely medically indicated due to the low risk of malignant transformation. Removal can be performed in cases of secondary amblyopia in ptosis, compression of the lacrimal point, epiphora, or cosmetic desire. Treatment becomes necessary not only in case of suspicious manifestation or impairment of eyelid function, but it also helps to avoid possible bullying at school among children and is recommended at age 4 to 6 (before school age).

    Abstract Background: The extent of the damage following surgery has been subject of study for several years. Numerous surgical complications can impact postoperative quality of life of patients and even can cause mortality. Although these complications are generally due to multifactorial mechanisms, oxidative stress plays a key pathophysiological role. Moreover, oxidative stress could be an unavoidable effect derived even from the surgical procedure itself.
    Methods: A systematic review was performed following an electronic search of Pubmed and ScienceDirect databases. Keywords such as sepsis, oxidative stress, organ dysfunction, antioxidants, outcomes in postoperative complications, among others, were used. Review articles were preferably used between the years 2015 onwards, not excluding older ones.
    Results: The vast majority point to the role of oxidative stress in generating greater damage and worse prognosis in postoperative patients without the necessary care and precautions, taking importance on the use of antioxidants to prevent this problem.
    Discussions: Oxidative stress represents a common final pathway related to pathological processes such as inflammation or ischemia-reperfusion, among others. The expression of greater severity of these complications can result in multiple organ dysfunction or sepsis. The aim of this study was to present an update of the role of oxidative stress on surgical postoperative complications.

    Abstract Understanding how different organisms cope with changing temperatures is vital for predicting future species' distributions and highlighting those at risk from climate change. As ectotherms, butterflies are sensitive to temperature changes, but the factors affecting butterfly thermoregulation are not fully understood. We investigated which factors influence thermoregulatory ability in a subset of the Mediterranean butterfly community. We measured adult thoracic temperature and environmental temperature (787 butterflies; 23 species) and compared buffering ability (defined as the ability to maintain a consistent body temperature across a range of air temperatures) and buffering mechanisms to previously published results from Great Britain. Finally, we tested whether thermoregulatory ability could explain species' demographic trends in Catalonia. The sampled sites in each region differ climatically, with higher temperatures and solar radiation but lower wind speeds in the Catalan sites. Both butterfly communities show nonlinear responses to temperature, suggesting a change in behaviour from heat-seeking to heat avoidance at approximately 22°C. However, the communities differ in the use of buffering mechanisms, with British populations depending more on microclimates for thermoregulation compared to Catalan populations. Contrary to the results from British populations, we did not find a relationship between region-wide demographic trends and butterfly thermoregulation, which may be due to the interplay between thermoregulation and the habitat changes occurring in each region. Thus, although Catalan butterfly populations seem to be able to thermoregulate successfully at present, evidence of heat avoidance suggests this situation may change in the future.

    Abstract The copolymer synthesis process can be affected by failures in the production process or by contaminating compounds such as ketones, thiols, and gases, among others. These impurities act as an inhibiting agent of the Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalyst affecting its productivity and disturbing the polymerization reaction. In this work, the effect of formaldehyde, propionaldehyde, and butyraldehyde on the ZN catalyst and the way in which it affects the final properties of the ethylene-propylene copolymer is presented by analyzing 30 samples with different concentrations of the mentioned aldehydes along with three control samples. It was determined that the presence of formaldehyde 26 ppm, propionaldehyde 65.2 ppm, and butyraldehyde 181.2 ppm considerably affect the productivity levels of the ZN catalyst; this effect increases as the concentration of aldehydes is higher in the process; likewise, these impurities affect the properties of the final product, such as the fluidity index (MFI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), bending, tension, and impact, which leads to a polymer with low-quality standards and less resistance to breakage. The computational analysis showed that the complexes formed by formaldehyde, propionaldehyde, and butyraldehyde with the active center of the catalyst are more stable than those obtained by the ethylene-Ti and propylene-Ti complexes, presenting values of -40.5, -47.22, -47.5, -5.2 and -1.3 kcal mol

    Abstract Polypropylene synthesis is a critical process in the plastics industry, where control of catalytic activity is essential to ensure the quality and performance of the final product. In this study, the effect of two inhibitors, propanol and arsine, on the properties of synthesized polypropylene was investigated. Experiments were conducted using a conventional catalyst to polymerize propylene, and different concentrations of propanol and arsine were incorporated into the process. The results revealed that the addition of propanol led to a significant decrease in the Melt Flow Index (MFI) of the resulting polypropylene. The reduction in the MFI was most notable at a concentration of 62.33 ppm propanol, suggesting that propanol acts as an effective inhibitor by slowing down the polymerization rate and thus reducing the fluidity of the molten polypropylene. On the other hand, introducing arsine as an inhibitor increased the MFI of polypropylene. The maximum increase in the MFI was observed at a concentration of 0.035 ppm arsine. This suggests that small amounts of arsine affect the MFI and Mw of the produced PP. Regarding the catalyst productivity, it was found that as the concentration of propanol in the sample increased (approximately seven ppm), there was a decrease in productivity from 45 TM/kg to 44 TM/kg. Starting from 10 ppm, productivity continued to decline, reaching its lowest point at 52 ppm, with only 35 MT/kg. In the case of arsine, changes in catalyst productivity were observed at lower concentrations than with propanol. Starting from about 0.006 ppm, productivity decreased, reaching 39 MT/kg at a concentration of 0.024 ppm and further decreasing to 36 TM/kg with 0.0036 ppm. Computational analysis supported the experimental findings, indicating that arsine adsorbs more stably to the catalyst with an energy of -60.8 Kcal/mol, compared to propanol (-46.17 Kcal/mol) and isobutyl (-33.13 Kcal/mol). Analyses of HOMO and LUMO orbitals, as well as reactivity descriptors, such as electronegativity, chemical potential, and nucleophilicity, shed light on the potential interactions and chemical reactions involving inhibitors. Generated maps of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) illustrated the charge distribution within the studied molecules, further contributing to the understanding of their reactivity. The computational results supported the experimental findings and provided additional information on the molecular interactions between the inhibitors and the catalyst, shedding light on the possible modes of inhibition. Solubles in xylene values indicate that both propanol and arsine affect the polymer's morphology, which may have significant implications for its properties and final applications.

    Abstract The various chemicals in industrial wastewater can be beneficial for improving its circularity. If extraction methods are used to capture valuable components from the wastewater and then recirculate them throughout the process, the potential of the wastewater can be fully exploited. In this study, wastewater produced after the polypropylene deodorization process was evaluated. These waters remove the remains of the additives used to create the resin. With this recovery, contamination of the water bodies is avoided, and the polymer production process becomes more circular. The phenolic component was recovered by solid-phase extraction and HPLC, with a recovery rate of over 95%. FTIR and DSC were used to evaluate the purity of the extracted compound. After the phenolic compound was applied to the resin and its thermal stability was analyzed via TGA, the compound's efficacy was finally determined. The results showed that the recovered additive improves the thermal qualities of the material.
