Abstract The HyperTh{\'e}sau and Bibracte num{\'e}rique projects have given rise to a collective effort centred on the use of vocabulary as a means of ensuring the interoperability of archaeological data throughout its life cycle. To this end, the use of the standardised form of the thesaurus -- via the Opentheso platform -- provides a tool that is already adapted to the Linked Data. Nevertheless, its use quickly raised the question of the different paradigms presiding over the elaboration of a specific vocabulary by each (group of) scientist(s). The ISO 25964 standard -- designed for the management and interoperability of indexing languages -- is flexible enough to permit the comparison and linking of different scientific or documentary ``points of view''. Their coherence through interoperability alignments nevertheless requires to interface different semantic granularities: search reporting, the description of raw data, a gateway or ''pivot'' between the two, by using a regulated cooperation methodology. The challenges that remain to be met on this path do not prevent the thesaurus tool from already being a suitable support for a complete ''human-to-machine-to-human'' interoperability, developed within the framework of the Bibracte Ville Ouverte project and exemplified through a research on the ceramics of that archaeological site.

Abstract Moir\'e patterns are additional, long-range periodicities in twisted crystalline bilayers. They are known to fundamentally change the electronic states of the layers, but similar effects on their mechanical and vibrational properties have not been discussed so far. Here we show that the Moir\'e potential shifts the radial breathing mode in double walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). The change of frequency is expected to be proportional to the shift in optical transition energies, which are induced by the Moir\'e patterns. To verify our model we performed resonant Raman scattering on purified and sorted semiconducting DWCNTs. We find that the radial breathing mode shifts up to 14 cm$^{-1}$ higher in energy followed by optical transitions energies displacement up to 200 meV to lower energies, compared to the single-walled tubes. We show how to identify the strong coupling condition in DWCNTs from their phonon frequencies and construct a Kataura plot to aid their future experimental assignment.

  9. Article ; Online: Is immunoglobulin E to Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxins associated with asthma at 20 years?

Abstract: ... participants at age 20. In serum, specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) to SE and common aeroallergens were measured ...

Abstract Background: In adults, subjects sensitized to Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxins (SE) seem to have an increased risk of asthma, whereas this association is less clear in childhood and adolescence. The primary aim of the present analysis was to examine the association between sensitization to SE and asthma at the age of 20 years.
Methods: The German Multicentre Allergy Study recruited 1314 healthy newborns in 1990. We analyzed data from 61 asthmatics (based on at least two criteria: physician diagnosed asthma ever, wheezing in the last 12 months, asthma medication in the last 12 months) and 122 healthy study participants at age 20. In serum, specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) to SE and common aeroallergens were measured. The association between asthma at age 20 and sensitization to SE was estimated by logistic regression models considering allergic, socio-demographic, and lifestyle factors as potential confounders.
Results: Fifty-five percent of the included participants were female. At age 20, subjects sensitized to SE were more likely to have asthma than not-sensitized subjects: raw odds ratio (OR) 2.5, 95%-confidence interval (95%CI) [1.3-4.7]; adjusted OR 1.6, 95%CI [0.8-3.4].
Conclusion: Asthmatics at age 20 were more often sensitized to SE compared to controls. Our study may indicate a moderate relationship between SE-sensitization and asthma; however, this association attenuated after adjusting for potential confounders and was no longer statistically significant. Longitudinal investigations with SE-IgE measurements at different time points in larger samples are needed to explore the temporal manner of this relationship.

Abstract The passive search by proteins for particular DNA sequences involving nonspecific DNA is essential for gene regulation, DNA repair, phage defense, and diverse epigenetic processes. Distinct mechanisms contribute to these searches, and it remains unresolved as to which mechanism or blend of mechanisms best suits a particular protein and, more importantly, its biological role. To address this, we compare the translocation properties of two well-studied bacterial restriction endonucleases (ENases), EcoRI and EcoRV. These dimeric, magnesium-dependent enzymes hydrolyze related sites (EcoRI ENase, 5'-GAATTC-3'; EcoRV ENase, 5'-GATATC-3'), leaving overhangs and blunt DNA segments, respectively. Here, we demonstrate that the extensive sliding by EcoRI ENase, involving sliding up to ∼600 bp prior to dissociating from the DNA, contrasts with a larger reliance on hopping mechanism(s) by EcoRV ENase. The mechanism displayed by EcoRI ENase results in a highly thorough search of DNA, whereas the EcoRV ENase mechanism results in an extended, yet less rigorous, interrogation of DNA sequence space. We describe how these mechanistic distinctions are complemented by other aspects of these endonucleases, such as the 10-fold higher in vivo concentrations of EcoRI ENase compared to that of EcoRV ENase. Further, we hypothesize that the highly diverse enzyme arsenal that bacteria employ against foreign DNA involves seemingly similar enzymes that rely on distinct but complementary search mechanisms. Our comparative approach reveals how different proteins utilize distinct site-locating strategies.
