Abstract Grazing equids are constantly exposed to three clinically important gastrointestinal parasites (small strongyles/cyathostomins, Anoplocephala spp. and Parascaris spp.). Knowledge of the local seasonal dynamic of these parasitic infections is important for constructing a sustainable parasite control program with a rational number of anthelmintic treatments. However, studies describing these patterns are sparse in France. In this context, a two-year study was carried out to assess i) the seasonal dynamic and variability of strongyle faecal egg counts (FEC) and infective larvae (L3) counts on pastures, and ii) the prevalence of Anoplocephala spp. and Parascaris spp. and the dynamic evolution of their presence. During 2021 and 2022 grazing seasons, monthly individual faecal egg counts (FEC) and diarrhea scores (DS) were determined on 428 equids divided into 33 groups. A monthly body condition score (BCS) was also attributed to animals ≥3 years old and a monthly bodyweight was estimated for each animal <3 years old. At the group level, the strongyle L3 counts on grazed pastures were carried out at least in spring, summer and autumn. Eggs of strongyles were observed in 97% of equids. In 64% of the groups, the peaks of FEC were noted in September and October. At the individual level, the maximum strongyle FEC was related to age, group of breeds, number of grazed plots and number of anthelmintic treatments. No negative association was observed between strongyle FEC and BCS or average daily weight gain. In the pastures, cyathostomin larvae were found almost exclusively. Over the two years, the peaks of cyathostomin L3 counts occurred in 87% of the groups between September and November and ranged from 635 to 87,500 L3 kg

Abstract Introduction: The insulinotropic capacity of exogenous glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is reduced in type 2 diabetes and the insulin-resistant obese. We have tested the hypothesis that this response is the consequence of a reduced pancreatic GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1r) density in insulin-resistant obese animals.
Research design and methods: GLP-1r density was measured in lean and insulin-resistant adult miniature pigs after the administration of a
Results: GLP-1r binding potential in the obese pancreas was reduced by 75% compared with lean animals. Similar reductions were evident for fat tissue, but not for the duodenum. In the lean group, induced hyperinsulinemia reduced pancreatic GLP-1r density to a level comparable with that of the obese group. The reduction in blood to tissue transfer of the GLP-1r ligand paralleled that of tissue perfusion estimated using
Conclusions: These observations establish that a reduction in abdominal tissue perfusion and a lower GLP-1r density account for the diminished insulinotropic effect of GLP-1 agonists in type 2 diabetes.

Abstract In all, 30% to 90% of prostate cancer patients undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) recover their erectile capacity. No effective post RP erectile rehabilitation program exists to date. The aim of this exploratory qualitative study is to explore the needs of these patients and to develop a patient education program (PEP) which meets these needs. Interviews were carried out by a socio-anthropologist with prostate cancer patients treated by RP within the 6 previous months. The needs and expectations identified led to the choice of a logical model of change for the construction of the PEP. Nineteen patients were included in the study; 17 of them were living with a partner. Two categories of patients appeared during the interviews: informed patients resigned to lose their sexuality and patients misinformed about the consequences of the surgery. The tailored program was built on the Health Belief Model and provides six individual sessions, including one with the partner, to meet the needs identified. This study designed the first program to target comprehensively the overall sexuality of the patient and his partner, and not only erection issues. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this program, a controlled, multicentric clinical trial is currently ongoing.

Abstract Introduction and aims: Malnutrition is frequent in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). We examined the relationship between malnutrition at diagnosis and all-cause hospitalization, survival, and acute exacerbation in newly diagnosed IPF patients.
Methods: In this prospective cohort study, the nutritional status of 153 consecutive newly-diagnosed IPF outpatients was evaluated by measuring body mass index (BMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI) with bioelectrical impedance analysis, and food intake with the Self Evaluation of Food Intake (SEFI)®. Diagnosis was taken as the baseline date and malnutrition was defined as an FFMI below 17 (men) or 15 kg/m
Results: A quarter (26%; 40/153) of the patients were suffering from malnutrition at baseline, which was more frequent (62%) in patients whose BMI was <25 kg/m
Conclusions: Malnutrition and decreased food intake at IPF diagnosis are associated with all-cause hospitalization and mortality. Future studies will determine whether dedicated interventions to improve food intake and nutritional status could improve outcomes for IPF patients.

Abstract In dairy farms, new rearing practices of calves with nurse cows have been developed by farmers but still remain poorly documented. The objective was to assess the impact of rearing suckling calves with nurse cows on the same pastures on the risk of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in calves. The grazing management has been recorded for each group. Serum pepsinogen level and GIN egg excretion per gram of faeces (epg) were determined in 438 calves belonging to 38 groups from 30 farms in the western part of France at housing (October 2018 to January 2019). The maximum number of infective larval generations met by the animals (LG) in each pasture plot was modelled by Parasit’Sim expert system. The data were analyzed using logistic regression (univariate and multivariate). Mean parasiticological parameters per group were low. On average, the serum pepsinogen level was 1.1 units of tyrosine (U Tyr) and the GIN egg output was 130 epg. Pasture infectivity was above LG4 for 2/3 of the groups. These results suggest that rearing suckling dairy calves with nurse cows decreases the level of GIN infection in calves at the end of the 1st grazing season compared with putting out to pasture weaned heifers alone. This can be explained by i) the fact that cows were immune and have a cleansing effect on the pastures when eating a lot of larvae while excreting few eggs and ii) Because not weaned calves had a slow larval intake when drinking milk from nurse cows.

Abstract Our aim in this study was to investigate whether the behaviors of dairy cows on pasture, predicted with accelerometer data and combined with GPS data, can be used to better understand the relationship between behaviors and pasture characteristics. During spring 2018, 26 Holstein cows were equipped with a 3D-accelerometer and a GPS sensor fixed on a neck-collar for five days. The cows grazed alternatively in permanent and in temporary grasslands. The structural elements, soil moisture, slope and botanical characteristics were identified. Behaviors were predicted every 10 s from the accelerometer data and combined with the GPS data. The time-budgets expressed in each characterized zone of 8 m × 8 m were calculated. The relation between the time-budgets and pasture characteristics was explored with a linear mixed model. In the permanent grassland, dairy cows spent more time under a tree to ruminate (

Abstract The agro-ecological transition is based on “bottom up” innovation processes developed by agricultural stakeholders. The role of researchers is now to accompany this process by working closely with them. Since the 90s, groups of dairy farmers have been set up in many developed countries to exchange information about intensive grazing management. Within these groups, organic dairy breeders have experimented new cow-calf rearing practices, in which a specific batch of lactating cows is constituted in order to nurse and raise 2-4 calves each (usually replacement heifers) for several months on pasture. The objective of our study was to assess effects of this innovative rearing system on growth and health of the calves, with a focus on the risk of grazing parasite (gastrointestinal nematodes). On an experimental organic farm located in East of France, we designed a cow-calf rearing system in collaboration with farmers experienced on this practice. A 2-year study of 3 cohorts of 9, 16 and 23 calves was conducted from 2016 to 2019. We weighed, recorded all health events and measured different parasitic indicators at key times of the grazing season. Calves showed a fast and steady growth during the 2 years of follow-up, allowing a calving at 24 months old. Parasitic risks were low, with nurse cows playing a protective role towards infection. In addition, early immunity against gastrointestinal nematodes was developed in calves. Throughout the study, the calves did not receive any antibiotic nor anti-parasitic treatments. Only one calf died due to ruminal tympany. Rearing calves with nurse cows seems to be of real interest for their growth and health, and in particular the management of parasitic risks. Further studies in other farms are needed to validate these results.

Abstract The healthcare utilization of homeless people is generally considered insufficient, and studies often suffer from methodological bias (institutionalized vs. street samples). To adapt public health policies in France, epidemiological data on this population are scarce. The objective of this study was to analyze the use of psychiatric care by homeless people with mental health problems in the Greater Paris area and to define the factors influencing this use. The data were from the SAMENTA survey performed in 2009 with a representative random street sample of 859 homeless people from the Greater Paris area. The survey studied the use of psychiatric care (lifelong use, current follow-up, discontinuation of follow-up and treatment) and factors potentially associated with this use for people with a diagnosis of a psychotic, mood or anxiety disorder, with the diagnosis established with an original survey device. Because of our complex sampling design, we describe data for only a weighted estimated prevalence, weighted estimation of the number of people in the population (N) and unweighted total subgroup studied in the survey (
