Abstract Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been used as flame retardants in building materials, electronics, furnishings, vehicles, airplanes, plastics, polyurethane foams, and textiles for many years. Currently, the primary commercial mixtures, penta-, octa-, and deca-BDE, are globally restricted. Still, products containing PBDEs are expected to impact waste management and the environment for many years. In January 2016, an open fire in the Santa Marta landfill close to Santiago de Chile affected the city and surroundings. The fire caused several acute health effects and an increase in emergency hospitalizations. We measured PBDE levels in the areas affected by the fire in the air (gaseous and particulate) and soil, and PBDE emissions were estimated using a dispersion model. The results showed an increase in PBDE concentrations by a factor of 2-4 one day after the start of the fire. However, PBDE concentrations measured after the fire in PM

Title translation Frequency of smoking among hospitalized patients.
Abstract Background: Smoking is one of the most relevant public health problems worldwide and one of the main causes of preventable premature death. In-hospital treatment and subsequent follow-up are effective in terms of cessation.
Aim: To determine the frequency of smoking habits among patients hospitalized at a private clinic in Santiago.
Material and methods: Hospitalized patients were invited to answer a structured and adapted questionnaire on smoking habits.
Results: The survey was answered by 294 patients (56% women). Twenty three percent of respondents were smokers. Among smokers, 50% indicated a consumption from 1 to 5 cigarettes per day, 19% smoked during the first hour after waking, and 43% lived with another smoker in their home. Eighty three percent thought about quitting and made unsuccessful attempts to quit using different strategies.
Conclusions: The percentage of smokers in this group of patients is lower than that reported in the national health survey. The high proportion of respondent that are attempted to quit and failed, justifies the availability of structured quitting programs at the hospital and follow-up strategies after discharge.

Abstract Introduction: Diseases transmitted by foods take place due to the ingestion of foods and/or contaminated drinks. Objective: To identify the causal agents that influence in the emergence of these diseases. Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of all the diseases outbreaks transmitted by foods was carried out in Santiago de Cuba, from January, 2018 to December, 2019. The analyzed variables were: number of outbreaks, samples of foods and samples of stools for coproculture, among others. Results: In all the outbreaks a single type of bacterial agent was isolated, with prevalence of the gram-negative bacterias, where Salmonella was the most identified microorganism. The main groups of foods related to the emergence of these outbreaks were meat and its derived products, as well as cold salad. Conclusions: The epidemiologic surveillance of diseases outbreaks transmitted by foods, allowed to identify the true causal agent in the FTD outbreaks, when the identity between the bacterial isolations obtained from samples of foods and stools was demonstrated.

The results showed an increase in PBDE concentrations by a factor of 2–4 one day after the start of the fire. However, PBDE concentrations measured after the fire in PM₁₀ and the gas phase were considered low compared to other regions. Interestingly, PBDEs’ patterns differed across the sites; however, BDE209 was the dominant congener for all environmental matrices. A preliminary risk assessment was conducted using the daily exposure dose (DED) by air inhalation estimation. The results showed low DED values for adults and children and suggested no direct health risk due to PBDE exposure. This study brings new data useful for future solid waste management initiatives in the country.

Abstract Lake Victoria, globally the second-largest freshwater Lake by surface area, houses an artisanal Nile Perch Fishery that directly involves around 200K people. While the 10 whole Lake surface is potentially available to fishing activities, the fishing vessels' operational and technical characteristics, in conjunction with fuel costs, create stark differences in the access costs between areas close to the shore and those farther away (up to 70Km from the nearest dry land). Evidence indicates that most fishing effort is made very close to the shore. There is an imbalance between the fish stock 15 distribution and the fishing fleet's ability to access and profit from it. Nonetheless, this aspect has not been considered in the literature, not in its consequences nor in the way it can be leveraged for management purposes. This paper employs a model replicating Nile Perch Fishery's most critical spatial aspects. It explores the potential of a Policy declaring the central areas of the Lake as Reserve areas. While 20 not a first-best Policy, it reduces the costs in patrolling activities, benefiting and levering the higher costs of reaching reserved areas. It reduces the variance in the system as it is perturbed by external factors, e.g., prices, and hence, it increases its resilience to external shocks.
