Abstract Human sleep is cyclical with a period of approximately 90 minutes, implying long temporal dependency in the sleep data. Yet, exploring this long-term dependency when developing sleep staging models has remained untouched. In this work, we show that while encoding the logic of a whole sleep cycle is crucial to improve sleep staging performance, the sequential modelling approach in existing state-of-the-art deep learning models are inefficient for that purpose. We thus introduce a method for efficient long sequence modelling and propose a new deep learning model, L-SeqSleepNet, which takes into account whole-cycle sleep information for sleep staging. Evaluating L-SeqSleepNet on four distinct databases of various sizes, we demonstrate state-of-the-art performance obtained by the model over three different EEG setups, including scalp EEG in conventional Polysomnography (PSG), in-ear EEG, and around-the-ear EEG (cEEGrid), even with a single EEG channel input. Our analyses also show that L-SeqSleepNet is able to alleviate the predominance of N2 sleep (the major class in terms of classification) to bring down errors in other sleep stages. Moreover the network becomes much more robust, meaning that for all subjects where the baseline method had exceptionally poor performance, their performance are improved significantly. Finally, the computation time only grows at a sub-linear rate when the sequence length increases.

    Abstract: ... bioreactor culture at the laboratory 0.1 L scale using a Vertical-Wheel ...

Abstract Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are an ideal cell source for allogenic cell therapy due to their immunomodulatory and differentiation properties. Equine MSCs (eMSCs) have been found to be a promising treatment for equine joint injuries including meniscal injuries, cartilage degradation, and osteoarthritis. Although the use of eMSCs has shown efficacy in preliminary studies, challenges associated with biomanufacturing remain. To achieve the required cell numbers for clinical application, bioreactor-based processes are required. Initial studies have shown that eMSCs can be cultivated in microcarrier-based, stirred suspension bioreactor culture at the laboratory 0.1 L scale using a Vertical-Wheel

Abstract By analyzing 7.33  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the observation of the semileptonic decay D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ}, with a statistical significance larger than 10σ, and the measurements of the D_{s}^{+}→ημ^{+}ν_{μ} and D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ} decay dynamics for the first time. The branching fractions of D_{s}^{+}→ημ^{+}ν_{μ} and D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ} are determined to be (2.235±0.051_{stat}±0.052_{syst})% and (0.801±0.055_{stat}±0.028_{syst})%, respectively, with precision improved by factors of 6.0 and 6.6 compared to the previous best measurements. Combined with the results for the decays D_{s}^{+}→ηe^{+}ν_{e} and D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}e^{+}ν_{e}, the ratios of the decay widths are examined both inclusively and in several ℓ^{+}ν_{ℓ} four-momentum transfer ranges. No evidence for lepton flavor universality violation is found within the current statistics. The products of the hadronic form factors f_{+,0}^{η^{(')}}(0) and the c→s Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{cs}| are determined. The results based on the two-parameter series expansion are f_{+,0}^{η}(0)|V_{cs}|=0.452±0.010_{stat}±0.007_{syst} and f_{+,0}^{η^{'}}(0)|V_{cs}|=0.504±0.037_{stat}±0.012_{syst}, which help to constrain present models on f_{+,0}^{η^{(')}}(0). The forward-backward asymmetries are determined to be ⟨A_{FB}^{η}⟩=-0.059±0.031_{stat}±0.005_{syst} and ⟨A_{FB}^{η^{'}}⟩=-0.064±0.079_{stat}±0.006_{syst} for the first time, which are consistent with the theoretical calculation.

Abstract Carduus nutans L. (Compositae) has been extensively used for medicinal purposes. As other representatives of the genus it is implemented in the treatment of liver disorders and used as diuretic and digestive agent. Previous studies have determined the predominant classes of secondary metabolites in Carduus species. Among the major representatives of their extracts flavonoids, phenolic acids, coumarins, sterols and terpenes were identified. The antiradical capacity of three extracts assessed in the DPPH test revealed the highest radical scavenging properties of methanol extract (the EC

Abstract An interval of about twenty years separates Peter Brook’s The Empty Space from Gilles Deleuze’s “The Exhausted.” The first is a book about theatre practice and the need for new forms, the second is a theoretical examination of four of Samuel Beckett’s television plays. Their comparison provides a starting point for this study, first because Brook’s and Deleuze’s conceptions of the notion of emptiness as a potential for creation converge in many respects and second because both texts echo each other in a way that allows for a deeper analysis of the image as a concept Deleuze considered to be the aim of art. Brook and Beckett are minimalist artists who remove, reduce and subtract to create an image stripped down to the bone, the form of something essential, the thing that remains after everything else has disappeared. The aim is to follow that trace through Brook’s and Beckett’s work in order to draw its contours and to see in what way exactly the work of the two Post-War artists meet, how emptiness and exhaustion allow them to create a form beyond language that reaches the spectator, placing her face to face with the mystery of life, with something beyond that is all contained within the image of the face.

Abstract We report the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters between D^{0} and D[over ¯]^{0} decays to K_{S,L}^{0}π^{+}π^{-} using a sample of 2.93  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Our results provide the key inputs for a binned model-independent determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ_{3} with B decays. Using our results, the decay model sensitivity to the γ/ϕ_{3} measurement is expected to be between 0.7° and 1.2°, approximately a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements, based on the studies of the simulated data. The improved precision of this work ensures that measurements of γ/ϕ_{3} will not be limited by knowledge of strong phases for the next decade. Furthermore, our results provide critical input for other flavor-physics investigations, including charm mixing, other measurements of CP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other D-decay modes.

Abstract The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), is an important vector for Rickettsia rickettsii, causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Current public health prevention and control efforts to protect people involve preventing tick infestations on domestic animals and in and around houses. Primary prevention tools rely on acaricides, often synthetic pyrethroids (SPs); resistance to this chemical class is widespread in ticks and other arthropods. Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. is a complex that likely contains multiple unique species and although the distribution of this complex is global, there are differences in morphology, ecology, and perhaps vector competence among these major lineages. Two major lineages within Rh. sanguineus s.l., commonly referred to as temperate and tropical, have been documented from multiple locations in North America, but are thought to occupy different ecological niches. To evaluate potential acaricide resistance and better define the distributions of the tropical and temperate lineages throughout the US and in northern Mexico, we employed a highly multiplexed amplicon sequencing approach to characterize sequence diversity at: 1) three loci within the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) gene, which contains numerous genetic mutations associated with resistance to SPs; 2) a region of the gamma-aminobutyric acid-gated chloride channel gene (GABA-Cl) containing several mutations associated with dieldrin/fipronil resistance in other species; and 3) three mitochondrial genes (COI, 12S, and 16S). We utilized a geographically diverse set of Rh sanguineus s.l. collected from domestic pets in the US in 2013 and a smaller set of ticks collected from canines in Baja California, Mexico in 2021. We determined that a single nucleotide polymorphism (T2134C) in domain III segment 6 of the VGSC, which has previously been associated with SP resistance in Rh. sanguineus s.l., was widespread and abundant in tropical lineage ticks (>50 %) but absent from the temperate lineage, suggesting that resistance to SPs may be common in the tropical lineage. We found evidence of multiple copies of GABA-Cl in ticks from both lineages, with some copies containing mutations associated with fipronil resistance in other species, but the effects of these patterns on fipronil resistance in Rh. sanguineus s.l. are currently unknown. The tropical lineage was abundant and geographically widespread, accounting for 79 % of analyzed ticks and present at 13/14 collection sites. The temperate and tropical lineages co-occurred in four US states, and as far north as New York. None of the ticks we examined were positive for Rickettsia rickettsii or Rickettsia massiliae.

Abstract Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) are a fundamental staple for millions of people worldwide. They provide essential amino acids, vitamins, and starch - a vital component of the human diet, providing energy and serving as a source of fiber. Unfortunately, global warming is posing a severe threat to this crop, leading to significant yield losses, and thereby endangering global food security. Industrial agriculture traditionally relies on excessive nitrogen (N) fertilization to boost yields. However, it remains uncertain whether this is effective in combating heat-related yield losses of potato. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the combinatory effects of heat stress and N fertilization on potato tuber formation. We demonstrate that N levels and heat significantly impact tuber development. The combination of high N and heat delays tuberization, while N deficiency initiates early tuberization, likely through starvation-induced signals, independent of SELF-PRUNING 6A (SP6A), a critical regulator of tuberization. We also found that high N levels in combination with heat reduce tuber yield rather than improve it. However, our study revealed that SP6A overexpression can promote tuberization under these inhibiting conditions. By utilizing the excess of N for accumulating tuber biomass, SP6A overexpressing plants exhibit a shift in biomass distribution towards the tubers. This results in an increased yield compared to wild-type plants. Our results highlight the role of SP6A overexpression as a viable strategy for ensuring stable potato yields in the face of global warming. As such, our findings provide insights into the complex factors impacting potato crop productivity.

Abstract Previous studies indicate a role of dopamine in spatial navigation. Although neural representations of direction are an important aspect of spatial cognition, it is not well understood whether dopamine directly affects these representations, or only impacts other aspects of spatial brain function. Moreover, both dopamine and spatial cognition decline sharply during age, raising the question which effect dopamine has on directional signals in the brain of older adults. To investigate these questions, we used a double-blind cross-over L-DOPA/Placebo intervention design in which 43 younger and 37 older adults navigated in a virtual spatial environment while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We studied the effect of L-DOPA, a dopamine precursor, on fMRI activation patterns that encode spatial walking directions that have previously been shown to lose specificity with age. This was done in predefined regions of interest, including the early visual cortex, retrosplenial cortex, and hippocampus. Classification of brain activation patterns associated with different walking directions was improved across all regions following L-DOPA administration, suggesting that dopamine broadly enhances neural representations of direction. No evidence for differences between regions was found. In the hippocampus these results were found in both age groups, while in the retrosplenial cortex they were only observed in younger adults. Taken together, our study provides evidence for a link between dopamine and the specificity of neural responses during spatial navigation. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: The sense of direction is an important aspect of spatial navigation, and neural representations of direction can be found throughout a large network of space-related brain regions. But what influences how well these representations track someone's true direction? Using a double-blind cross-over L-DOPA/Placebo intervention design, we find causal evidence that the neurotransmitter dopamine impacts the fidelity of direction selective neural representations in the human hippocampus and retrosplenial cortex. Interestingly, the effect of L-DOPA was either equally present or even smaller in older adults, despite the well-known age related decline of dopamine. These results provide novel insights into how dopamine shapes the neural representations that underlie spatial navigation.
