Abstract The present study's primary goal is to apply analyses of stable isotopes and tooth micro- and mesowear to the question of dietary change among a mid-Holocene population of small brocket deer (Cervidae: Mazama) in response to anthropogenic alteration of the natural insular vegetation for approximately 450 calendar years (6060-5620 cal yr BP). The brocket deer remains were found in shell-bearing middens on Pedro González in the Pearl Island archipelago. This island is the third largest of many platform or continental islands in Pacific Panama that were periodically affected by rising post-glacial seas during Pleistocene warm periods and became hills in drowned plains during glacial periods, which were extensive on the Pacific side of the isthmus. Our study is based on pre-Columbian Mazama deer remains recovered from excavations in the ancient middens of Pedro González and on modern skeletons of Mazama deer belonging to three United States museum collections. For comparative purposes we added museum specimens of extant white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) of reduced size from the Florida Keys and Coiba Island (Pacific Panama). Our results show that the diets of 1) present-day white-tailed deer from Coiba and the Florida Keys and 2) the brocket deer (Mazama) still present on San José Island were browsers. On the other hand, as soon as Preceramic people arrived on Pedro Gonzalez ca 6000 cal yr BP, the local brocket deer's diet gradually included more and more abrasive plants in response to changes in vegetation cover related to increasing anthropogenic clearance for cultivation.

Abstract Presentamos datos cinemáticos para 211 nebulosas planetarias brillantes en once galaxias del Grupo Local: M31 (137 NPs), M32 (13), M33 (33), Fornax (1),Sagittarius (3), NGC 147 (2), NGC 185 (5), NGC 205 (9), NGC 6822 (6), Leo A (1), y Sextans A (1).

Abstract Iron is an important nutrient in the ocean, but the different sources and sinks of iron are not well constrained. Here, we use measurements of Fe concentration and Fe stable isotope ratios to evaluate the importance of reducing continental margins as a source of Fe to the open ocean. Dissolved iron concentration ([Fe]) and iron stable isotope ratios (δ⁵⁶Fe) were measured in the San Pedro and Santa Barbara basins. Dissolved δ⁵⁶Fe ranges from −1.82‰ to 0.00‰ in the San Pedro Basin and from −3.45‰ to −0.29‰ in the Santa Barbara Basin, and in both basins the lowest δ⁵⁶Fe values and highest Fe concentrations are found at the bottom of the basin reflecting the input of isotopically light Fe from reducing sediment porewaters. In the San Pedro Basin, we are also able to fingerprint an advective source of Fe from shallow continental shelves next to the basin and the atmospheric deposition of Fe into surface waters. A one-dimensional model of the Fe isotope cycle has been constructed for the deep silled San Pedro Basin. By fitting model output to data, values of several important iron cycle parameters are predicted including a flux of Fe from sediment porewaters into the water column of 0.32–1.14μmolm⁻²d⁻¹, a first-order dissolved Fe precipitation rate constant of 0.0018–0.0053d⁻¹, a flux δ⁵⁶Fe of −2.4‰, and an isotope effect for Fe precipitation of Δδ⁵⁶Feₚₐᵣₜᵢcᵤₗₐₜₑ₋dᵢₛₛₒₗᵥₑd=−0.8‰. Applying our model-predicted Fe cycle parameters to the global ocean suggests that continental margins contribute 4–12% of world ocean dissolved Fe and make the ocean’s Fe lighter by −0.08‰ to −0.26‰. The dramatically negative δ⁵⁶Fe signature seen in the water column of the San Pedro and Santa Barbara basins demonstrate the utility of Fe isotopes as a tracer for continental margin Fe input from reducing sediments to the oceans, while the isotopic fractionation observed during loss of Fe from the dissolved phase suggests that this signature will be modified by subsequent reactions. Our modeling provides an initial framework for testing how these signals are transmitted into the open ocean.

Abstract We analysed the distribution of soft bottom sipunculansfrom San Pedro del Pinatar (Western Mediterranean). This study was carried out from December 2005 to June 2010, sampling with biannual periodicity (June and December). Physical and chemical parameters of the sediment were analysed (granulometry, organic matter content, pH, bottom salinity and shelter availability). Nine different species and subspecies were identified, belonging to five families. Aspidosiphon muelleri muelleri was the dominant species, accumulating 89.06% of the total abundance of sipunculans. Higher sipunculan abundances were correlated with stations of higher percentage of coarse sand, empty mollusc shells and empty tubes of the serpulid polychaete Ditrupa arietina, where some of the recorded species live. Sediment characteristics played the main role controlling the sipunculans distribution. Anthropogenic impacts could be indirectly affecting their distribution, changing the sediment characteristics.

Abstract Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for the normal formation of bones and calcium absorption. It is synthesized into our body through sunlight exposure and obtained by consuming foods rich in vitamin D (e.g., fatty fish, eggs yolk, dairy products). Its benefits on the health and performance of athletes are well documented. This article outlines some analytical challenges concerning the analytical quantification of vitamin D for its optimal intake, namely, a comprehensive study of the variability of the assay before categorizing any method as the golden standard, assurance of sample comparability to draw meaningful correlations, revision of the intake guidance based on appropriate statistical power analysis, and the implementation of rational strategies for preventing the underlying mechanism of preanalytical factors. Addressing these challenges will enable the effective management of vitamin D in the sports sector.
