| Abstract | In 1937, the collection of scientific instruments from the Physics Cabinet of the University of Coimbra, organised in the eighteenth by João António Dalla Bella (1726-1823), was obsolete, forgotten and dispersed across several rooms of the College of Jesus. After being commissioned to develop the Physics Laboratory inventory, its director, Mário Augusto da Silva (1901-1977), initiated the reorganisation and preservation of the cabinet, protecting this important scientific heritage from total abandonment. Unable to pursue with other projects, such as the Coimbra Institute of Radio and the Radio Broadcasting, Silva finds, in the Physics Laboratory, an anchor to overcome adversities and challenges that would nevertheless culminate in his compulsory retirement in 1947. In this article, the reorganisation of the Physics Cabinet, which ultimately would result in the creation of a museum, will be analysed and discussed. |
