Abstract Background: Healthcare-associated infections extend hospitalization time, increase treatment costs and increase morbidity-mortality rates.
Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of a care bundle aimed at preventing three most frequent intensive care unit-acquired infections.
Materials and method: This quasi-experimental study occurred in an 18-bed tertiary care intensive care unit at a university hospital in Turkey. The sample consisted of 120 patients older than 18years and receiving invasive mechanical ventilation therapy, or had a central venous catheter or urinary catheter. The study comprised three stages. In stage one, the intensive care unit nurses were trained in infection measures, VAP, CA-UTIs and CLABSIs sections of the care bundle. In stage two, the trained nurses applied the care bundle and received feedback on any problematic issues. In stage three, the nurses' compatibility and efficacy of the infection prevention care bundle on the infection rates of VAP, CA-UTIs and CLABSIs were evaluated over three 3-month periods.
    Results: Over 1000 ventilation days, ventilator-associated pneumonia infection rates were 23.4, 12.6, and 11.5, during January-March, April-June and July-September, respectively, with January-March and April-June showing a significant decrease (χ
Conclusions: The infection rates decreased with increased compatibility of the care bundle prepared from evidence-based guidelines.

Abstract Lack of motivation of students is a major concern for the instructors and administration in universities, and it is in their interest to address these issues in the most effective and efficient way. The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed-method study is to examine the predictive power of the learning environment on student academic motivation and to learn students' opinions on this issue. One hundred twenty students enrolled at the Molecular Biology and Genetics program completed the Academic Motivation and Learning Environment Perception scales, Quantitative findings indicated that only the activities dimension of the learning environment has a predictive power on academic motivation. Focus group interviews conducted with 16 students validated the quantitative findings. Students particularly drew attention to activities that foster active participation in the learning process, emphasizing the vitality of being engaged and of having real-life experiences in their learning environment.

Abstract Background: Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII = N × P/L), and neutrophil percentage-albumin ratio (NPAR) have become accepted markers of inflammation in recent years. These indices are used as indicators of disease activity, mortality, and morbidity in many diseases. This study evaluated the relationship between inflammatory indices and graft function in pediatric kidney transplant recipients.
Methods: Medical records of pediatric patients who underwent kidney transplantation at Ege University between 1995 and 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were recorded during the third month, first year, and fifth year of transplantation and at the last visit.
Results: The median age of the 119 patients (60 boys/59 girls) at the time of transplantation was 154 months, and the median follow-up period was 101 months. According to Spearman correlation analysis, patients' final creatinine levels were positively correlated with NLR (r = 0.319), PLR (r = 0.219), SII (r = 0.214), and NPAR (r = 0.347) of the last visit; final estimate glomerular filtration rate levels were negatively correlated with NLR (P = .010, r = -0.250) and NPAR (P = .004, r = -0.277). The median NPAR of the patients with chronic allograft dysfunction at the last visit was found to be statistically significantly higher than without (P = .032).
Conclusion: NLR, PLR, SII, and NPAR values are correlated with creatinine levels after 5 years of kidney transplantation. The NPAR and final creatinine levels had the highest correlation coefficient among these inflammatory markers. These results suggest that inflammatory markers, especially NPAR, may be a candidate to be an indicator of ongoing inflammation in the graft.

Abstract Introduction: Acitretin is a commonly used retinoid in dermatology. Although there are generally known side effects, the effects on the epiphyseal plaque and bone metabolism are not clear in the literature.
Aim: To histopathologically investigate the effects on the epiphyseal plate and assess variations in bone metabolism caused by acitretin.
Material and methods: Three groups were formed with 10 rats in each group. The 1
Results: Staining with haematoxylin-eosin found reductions in the epiphyseal plate in the 1
Conclusions: Our data show that though acitretin caused degeneration of the epiphyseal plate, it did not cause clear thinning and we identified no significant variations in bone metabolism markers.

Abstract Chemotherapy-induced acral erythema (CIAE) is a cutaneous response to diverse chemotherapeutic drug administration. These drugs cause symmetrical and painful erythema of palmoplantar surfaces. Bulla formation, desquamation, and subsequent reepithelialization may occur. Commonly, the lesions slowly resolve over 7-15 days, through desquamation, followed by regeneration of the skin. Here, we described a case of CIAE, with involvement of face and neck in a patient treated for breast cancer using a number of chemotherapeutic agents. Face involvement in CIAE has not been previously reported in the literature.

Abstract A solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal tumour that frequently originates in the mesothelium-covered surfaces, such as the pleura and peritoneum. It may develop in various body parts, including the head and neck. These tumours may arise in several different patterns, which results in difficulties in diagnosing them. This case is a solitary tumour developing from the palatine tonsil in a 17-year-old male patient; it is the second case in the literature. The tumour has the histopathological characteristics of a patternless pattern, a slight pleomorphism, and a composition of hypercellular and hypocellular sites. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells showed a strong positive staining with CD34, Bcl-2, and vimentin. No recurrence developed in the patient's approximately 18-month-long follow-up period.

Abstract We report the surgical excision of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst that presented as a nonfunctioning left adrenal mass in a 25-year-old woman with continuous pain in the left flank. Preoperative biochemical testing confirmed that the mass was nonfunctional. Bronchogenic cysts are mostly benign congenital abnormalities that originate from the remnants of the primitive foregut and typically occur in the lung. Subdiaphragmatic and especially, retroperitoneal locations are rare. Despite the rarity of this pathologic entity, bronchogenic cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal cystic lesions. Diagnosis must be definitively confirmed by histology.
