Abstract: ... from the individual to the community level (e.g., phenology, biogeographical shifts, and community arrangement and ...

Abstract This review presents a recent theory named ‘macroecological theory on the arrangement of life’ (METAL). This theory is based on the concept of the ecological niche and shows that the niche-environment (including climate) interaction is fundamental to explain many phenomena observed in nature from the individual to the community level (e.g., phenology, biogeographical shifts, and community arrangement and reorganisation, gradual or abrupt). The application of the theory in climate change biology as well as individual and species ecology has been presented elsewhere. In this review, I show how METAL explains why there are more species at low than high latitudes, why the peak of biodiversity is located at mid-latitudes in the oceanic domain and at the equator in the terrestrial domain, and finally why there are more terrestrial than marine species, despite the fact that biodiversity has emerged in the oceans. I postulate that the arrangement of planetary biodiversity is mathematically constrained, a constraint we previously called ‘the great chessboard of life’, which determines the maximum number of species that may colonise a given region or domain. This theory also makes it possible to reconstruct past biodiversity and understand how biodiversity could be reorganised in the context of anthropogenic climate change.

Abstract Olfactory mucosa is well known for its lifelong ability for regeneration. Regeneration of neurons and regrowth of severed axons are the most common neural repair mechanisms in olfactory mucosa. Nonetheless, exposure to neurotoxic contaminants, such as copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and copper ions (Cu²⁺), may alter the reparative capacity of olfactory mucosa. Here, using RNA-sequencing, we investigated the molecular basis of neural repair mechanisms that were affected by CuNPs and Cu²⁺ in rainbow trout olfactory mucosa. The transcript profile of olfactory mucosa suggested that regeneration of neurons was inhibited by CuNPs. Exposure to CuNPs reduced the transcript abundances of pro-inflammatory proteins which are required to initiate neuroregeneration. Moreover, the transcript of genes encoding regeneration promoters, including canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling proteins and developmental transcription factors, were downregulated in the CuNP-treated fish. The mRNA levels of genes regulating axonal regrowth, including the growth-promoting signals secreted from olfactory ensheathing cells, were mainly increased in the CuNP treatment. However, the reduced transcript abundances of a few cell adhesion molecules and neural polarity genes may restrict axonogenesis in the CuNP-exposed olfactory mucosa. In the Cu²⁺-treated olfactory mucosa, both neural repair strategies were initiated at the transcript level. The stimulation of repair mechanisms can lead to the recovery of Cu²⁺-induced olfactory dysfunction. These results indicated CuNPs and Cu²⁺ differentially affected the neural repair mechanism in olfactory mucosa. Exposure to CuNP had greater effects on the expression of genes involved in olfactory repair mechanisms relative to Cu²⁺ and dysregulated the transcripts associated with stem cell proliferation and neural reconstitution.

Abstract Recently we introduced the active Dyson Brownian motion model (DBM), in which N run-and-tumble particles interact via a logarithmic repulsive potential in the presence of a harmonic well. We found that in a broad range of parameters the density of particles converges at large N to the Wigner semicircle law as in the passive case. In this paper we provide an analytical support for this numerical observation by studying the fluctuations of the positions of the particles in the nonequilibrium stationary state of the active DBM in the regime of weak noise and large persistence time. In this limit we obtain an analytical expression for the covariance between the particle positions for any N from the exact inversion of the Hessian matrix of the system. We show that, when the number of particles is large N≫1, the covariance matrix takes scaling forms that we compute explicitly both in the bulk and at the edge of the support of the semicircle. In the bulk the covariance scales as N^{-1}, while at the edge it scales as N^{-2/3}. Remarkably we find that these results can be transposed directly to an equilibrium model, the overdamped Calogero-Moser model in the low-temperature limit, providing an analytical confirmation of the numerical results obtained by Agarwal et al. [J. Stat. Phys. 176, 1463 (2019)0022-471510.1007/s10955-019-02349-6]. For this model our method also allows us to obtain the equilibrium two-time correlations and their dynamical scaling forms both in the bulk and at the edge. Our predictions at the edge are reminiscent of a recent result in the mathematics literature in Gorin and Kleptsyn [arXiv:2009.02006 (2023)] on the (passive) DBM. That result can be recovered by the present methods and also, as we show, using the stochastic Airy operator. Finally, our analytical predictions are confirmed by precise numerical simulations in a wide range of parameters.
