It is well known that trace metal pollution if one of major risk factors for coastal organisms who are exposed to the effects of industrial and urban discharges in bays and estuaries. In addition, it is also known that trace metals are involved in several biological cycles of different organisms, affecting their abundance and distribution. Several studies to evaluate the effects of the discharge of anthropogenic activities have been made, measuring the concentration of pollutants in water, sediments and organisms. In this context, bivalves have been used widely as index of coastal pollution processes, since they are sesile ...

Abstract Background and objective: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is a condition characterized by transient ventricular regional wall motion abnormalities, without causative coronary artery disease, typically triggered by emotional or physical stress. TTS is more common in post-menopausal women, closely resembling acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in its clinical presentation, with multiple proposed underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and no evidence-based treatments. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the latest research, encompassing the pathophysiology, diagnostic findings, prognosis, and treatment options for TTS patients.
Methods: Relevant literature from 1990 to June 2023 on TTS epidemiology, physiopathology, diagnosis, clinical manifestations, treatment, and prognosis was retrieved through PubMed research. Only English publications were included.
Key content and findings: TTS is an increasingly recognized cardiovascular disorder, a significant release of catecholamines is thought to be a key contributing element, yet its exact mechanism remains unclear. Notably, TTS poses significant short and long-term risks akin to ACS. Initial treatment should focus on ruling out ACS and providing standard care for subsequent left ventricular dysfunction and complications. Research hints at a potential role for Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and Angiotensin II receptor blockers in improving long-term prognosis in TTS patients.
Conclusions: Significant knowledge gaps still exist in our understanding of the pathophysiology, treatment options, and areas for improvement in diagnosing and prognosticating this intriguing condition. Further research is therefore needed.

Abstract An extensive spatial survey metal content to study the spatial distribution of Cu, Pb and Zn concentration in nearshore waters of San Jorge Bay, along the coast of Antofagasta City, Chile was carried out located near the Atacama desert, which represent the largest populated urban settlement in northern Chile (~ 260,000 inhabitants). The coastal zone of this area is under an intensive use as discharge location of pollutants of different sources. Dissolved Cu varies between 0.97 to 1.65 mug l-1, in the southern part of the study area and in front of an industrial discharge, respectively. The dissolved Pb shows a narrow concentration range (0.019 to 0.029 mug l-1) and Zn content varies between 1.7 mug l-1 in the northern part of the study area to 2.0 mug l-1, in front of the industrial discharge zone. The particulate Cu fraction pattern is similar to that of dissolved Cu, with concentrations varying between 126.8 mug g-1 and 467.2 mug g-1. Particulate Pb ranges between 9.8 to 33.8 mug g-1, and Zn 149.7 to 403.5 mug g-1. The spatial distribution of both, dissolved and particulate Cu, Pb and Zn results from local industrial sources located within Antofagasta City and San Jorge Bay current system that dilutes them as the water moves to the north. The particulate fraction is the dominant form of the metals, probably due to the dust coming from the Atacama desert, representing an important natural source of these metals to the water of the bay, particularly in those locations far from local inputs.

Abstract Introduction: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare but well-recognized cause of acute coronary syndrome, especially important in women. Invasive coronary angiography (ICA) is the fundamental diagnostic technique for the confirmation of SCAD. Knowing the angiographic patterns suggestive of SCAD is essential for the correct identification of patients with this entity.
Areas covered: In this narrative review, the main angiographic characteristics of SCAD lesions as detected by ICA are presented and discussed.
Expert opinion: In addition to the specific angiographic classification of SCAD, several authors have described complementary angiographic patterns suggestive of SCAD. Knowledge and correct identification of these angiographic patterns is essential for the correct diagnosis of patients with clinical suspicion of SCAD.

Abstract Purpose: Fasciola hepatica is a globally distributed trematode that causes significant economic losses. Triclabendazole is the primary pharmacological treatment for this parasite. However, the increasing resistance to triclabendazole limits its efficacy. Previous pharmacodynamics studies suggested that triclabendazole acts by interacting mainly with the β monomer of tubulin.
Methods: We used a high-quality method to model the six isotypes of F. hepatica β-tubulin in the absence of three-dimensional structures. Molecular dockings were conducted to evaluate the destabilization regions in the molecule against the ligands triclabendazole, triclabendazole sulphoxide and triclabendazole sulphone.
Results: The nucleotide binding site demonstrates higher affinity than the binding sites of colchicine, albendazole, the T7 loop and pβVII (p < 0.05). We suggest that the binding of the ligands to the polymerization site of β-tubulin can lead a microtubule disruption. Furthermore, we found that triclabendazole sulphone exhibited significantly higher binding affinity than other ligands (p < 0.05) across all isotypes of β-tubulin.
Conclusions: Our investigation has yielded new insight on the mechanism of action of triclabendazole and its sulphometabolites on F. hepatica β-tubulin through computational tools. These findings have significant implications for ongoing scientific research ongoing towards the discovery of novel therapeutics to treat F. hepatica infections.
