Abstract Introduction: There are meager individual-level data on long-term predictors of firearm suicide.
Methods: This was an analysis of males (N=189,558) in the Project Talent cohort, a national probability sample of high school schools in 1960 when students completed a baseline Project Talent self-report inventory. Mortality follow-up was contingent on survival until 1979, the onset of the National Death Index when the cohort had a mean age of 35.7 years. Mortality follow-up continued until death or age 75 years, reached by all surviving members by 2018. Analyses were conducted in 2022, with the main outcome being firearm suicide deaths (n=479). Factor analyses of Project Talent items yielded three key factors: (1) interests in firearm-related professions (i.e., military service, police force), (2) interests in hunting or fishing and knowledge of long guns, and (3) stereotypic masculinity.
Results: Survival analyses showed that long-term risk for firearm suicide was associated with 1-SD increases in firearm-related vocational interests in adolescence (adjusted hazard ratio [95% CI]=1.23 [1.09, 1.40]) and masculinity (adjusted hazard ratio [95% CI]=1.15 [1.04, 1.28]). Decreased long-term firearm suicide risk was associated with increased hunting interests and knowledge of long guns in adolescence (adjusted hazard ratio [95% CI]=0.86 [0.77, 0.96]) and competitive sports participation, an exploratory variable (adjusted hazard ratio [95% CI]=0.89 [0.80, 0.99]).
Conclusions: Prevention efforts are needed to lower long-term firearm suicide risk among adolescent males with high stereotypic masculinity and those interested in military or police service. Potential protective effects of competitive sports participation and socialization to long guns through hunting require further study.

Abstract: ... and S (BPS) concentrations were measured in each trimester from 501 pregnant women in a multi-center ...

Abstract Background: Atopic disease may be influenced by prenatal and early life exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals, including bisphenols, but results from epidemiological studies have been mixed. This study aimed to extend the epidemiological literature, hypothesizing that children with higher prenatal bisphenol exposure are more likely to have childhood atopic disease.
Methods: Urinary bisphenol A (BPA) and S (BPS) concentrations were measured in each trimester from 501 pregnant women in a multi-center, prospective pregnancy cohort. Ever asthma, current asthma, wheeze, and food allergy) were assessed at age six via standardized ISAAC questionnaire. We constructed generalized estimating equations to examine BPA and BPS exposure jointly at each trimester for each atopy phenotype. BPA was modeled as a log-transformed continuous variable, whereas BPS was modeled as detected versus not detected. We also modeled pregnancy-averaged BPA values and a categorical indicator for number of detectable BPS values over pregnancy (0-3) in logistic regression models.
    Results: First trimester BPA was associated with inverse odds of food allergy among the entire study sample (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.64-0.95, p = 0.01) and females only (OR = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.52-0.90, p = 0.006). The inverse relationship persisted in pregnancy-averaged models of BPA among females (OR = 0.56, 95% CI = 0.35-0.90, p = 0.006). Second trimester BPA was associated with greater odds of food allergy in the entire sample (OR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.02-1.58, p = 0.03) and among males only (OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.02-2.14, p = 0.04). Odds of current asthma increased among males in the pregnancy-averaged BPS models (OR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.01-2.69, p = 0.045).
Conclusion: We saw opposite effects of BPA on food allergy that were trimester- and sex-specific. These divergent associations warrant further investigation. There is some evidence to suggest that prenatal BPS is associated with asthma among males, but further research is required in cohorts with a greater proportion of prenatal urine samples with detectable BPS to validate these results.

Abstract Temporal arteritis usually presents in patients above 50 years and is characterised by granulomatous inflammation in all layers of the arterial wall. On the other hand, Monckeberg medial calcification is a disease condition limited to the tunica media of the affected vessels. In this report, authors present the case of a 68-year-old man who presented to the casualty with facial pain. He also had a runny nose, cough, and sleep disturbance. A Computed Tomography (CT) scan was performed and reported as normal. The patient underwent Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Ophthalmology evaluations. Neurology opinion revealed tenderness and thickening of the right superficial temporal artery. Based on clinical suspicion, the patient was started on oral corticosteroids, suspecting temporal arteritis. A temporal artery biopsy was performed for histopathological examination, which surprisingly revealed no evidence of arteritis but only calcification of the tunica media. Unfortunately, the patient was lost to follow-up after the biopsy. This case highlights the importance of recognising Monckeberg medial calcification in clinically suspected cases of temporal arteritis, as there are only a few reported cases in the literature.

Abstract Lucio Leprosy is a rare form of Lepromatous leprosy, which normally occurs in chronic untreated patients of Hansen’s disease. Lucio phenomenon, was first reported from Mexico and henceforth commonly known as Mexican leprosy, but is now being increasingly reported sporadically across the globe. Lucio leprosy presents as slowly progressive diffuse infiltration of skin all over the body with shiny waxy thickened skin, loss of body hair including eyebrows and eyelashes, puffy hands and sensory loss due to involvement of dermal nerves. There will be thickening of upper eyelids that gives the patient a sleepy look (Melancholy look). This case series pertains to three such patients of chronic lepromatous leprosy who had features suspicious of Lucio leprosy. Each case of this series had an unique clinical presentation like diffuse infiltration of skin, total loss of eyebrows, oedema of hands, characteristic triangular ulcers with jagged borders and was posing challenge to the treating Dermatologist. Heavy colonisation of Mycobaterium leprae was observed in the endothelium of small capillaries in the superficial dermis. Involvement of these capillaries manifested as haemorrhage and infarction of the overlying epidermis. As this unusual variant of untreated chronic lepromatous leprosy leads to potentially lethal complications, which are irreversible this study has been designed to highlight the factors predisposing to Lucio leprosy and its impact on the quality of life.

  10. Book ; Article ; Online: Trends and determinants of India’s virtual water trade in crop products

    2023

Abstract: This paper analyzed the determinants of India’s virtual water trade in crops and crop products ...

Abstract This paper analyzed the determinants of India’s virtual water trade in crops and crop products for the period 2001 to 2020. The study used product data at the 6-digit level of commodity classification, covering 206 commodities traded across 218 partner countries. Analysis shows that India has a favorable virtual water trade balance and terms of trade with its partner countries. Among the commodities traded, rice accounted for over one-fourth of the total volume of virtual water exported, and sunflower/safflower oil constitute over one-third of the total volume of virtual water imported. No consistent pattern was observed with regard to the level of endowment of water resources of export destination countries. Gravity model results revealed, as expected, that partner countries’ GDP and population size had a positive effect on virtual water exports, while distance had a negative effect. The coefficient of membership in a free trade agreement (FTA) was negative and statistically significant, implying that FTA member countries are sensitive to the trading of water-intensive agricultural products. The effect of amount of arable land on virtual water exports was negative; this implies that larger virtual water exports correlate with land constraints in a destination country that impede domestic agricultural production. The water endowment variables did not show any significant relationship with virtual water export flows, which confirms the finding in the literature that the water stress of a partner countries does not affect the direction of virtual water flows.
