Abstract The paper presents a project-based learning approach for the undergraduate level first course on control systems in the context of electrical and computer engineering program. We share the experience of a complex engineering project model that assumes no access to lab facility due to the COVID-19 pandemic but targets learning outcomes of a fundamental control system course, i.e., system modeling, performance investigation, analysis, design of analog or digital controller for a selected open-loop unstable system. The project utilizes Tinkercad Circuits which is a free online circuit simulator. The approach provides a solution to one of the challenges of remote or virtual engineering labs, i.e., a requirement of having high-performance expensive hardware and resource-intensive software support. Results are presented in terms of student samples and learning outcomes achieved at the end of the project.

Abstract Objective: To see if transporting paediatric patents to operation theatres using a battery operated vehicle decreases preoperative anxiety and reduce incidents of postoperative adverse events.
Methods: The study was conducted from May to August 2019 at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore, Pakistan, and comprised paediatric patients aged 3-5 years assessed as American Society of Anaesthesiologists grade I and II who were scheduled to undergo elective intrathecal chemotherapy under general anaesthesia. The subjects were randomised into intervention group A and control group B. Patients in group A were part of an incentive-based game in the holding bay area and were transported to the operation theatre using a battery-operated toy vehicle. Those in group B watched a pre-decided cartoon on television screen in the holding bay and were transported further using wheel chair. Induction of anaesthesia was done in the presence of guardians in both the groups. Patient anxiety was assessed using the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale in holding bay area T0, prior to induction of anaesthesia T1, and postoperative anaesthesia-related recovery T2. Data was analysed using SPSS 22.
Results: Of the 36 patients, 18(50%) were in group A; 12(66.6%) boys and 6(33.3%) girls with mean age 4.01±0.48 years. The remaining 18(50%) subjects were in group B; 13(72.2%) boys and 5(27.8%) girls with mean age 3.96 years. The difference in anxiety between the groups at T0 was non-significant (p=0.73). At T1 and T2, the scores were significantly lower group A compared to group B (p<0.05). Group A patients had better bag mask ventilation compliance at induction and remarkably less incidence of hypoxia, bronchospasm, postoperative agitation and early discharge from PACU.
Conclusions: Incentive-based game therapy decreased anxiety among paediatric patients preoperatively, made them more compliant and improved postoperative recovery.

Abstract A 53-year-old man was investigated for ongoing right ankle pain and lateral malleolus swelling following a traumatic inversion injury 12 weeks prior. The initial ankle radiograph was normal with no evidence of fracturing. The follow-up radiograph showed bridging ossification in the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis. As the pain did not subside, posttraumatic heterotopic ossification (HO) was suspected, and triple-phase dynamic bone imaging with technetium 99m-methylene diphosphonate was performed to guide further management. The bone scan revealed intense focal tracer activity centered on the HO of the tibiofibular syndesmosis, with no evidence of occult fracturing confirming HO as a pain generator.

Abstract The levels, spatial distribution, and sources of petroleum hydrocarbons and phthalates were assessed in surface sediment samples from the urban lagoon of Obhur near Jeddah, the largest city on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. The lagoon was divided into the inner zone, middle zone, and outer zone based on its geomorphological features and developmental activities. n-Alkanes, hopane and sterane biomarkers, and unresolved complex mixture were the major petroleum hydrocarbon compounds of the total extractable organic matter. Phthalates were also measured in the sediment samples. In the three zones, n-alkanes ranged from 89.3 ± 88.5 to 103.2 ± 114.9 ng/g, whereas the hopane and sterane biomarkers varied from 69.4 ± 75.3 to 77.7 ± 69.9 ng/g and 72.5 ± 77.9-89.5 ± 82.2 ng/g, respectively. The UCM concentrations ranged from 821 ± 1119 to 1297 ± 1684 ng/g and phthalates from 37.4 ± 34.5 65 ± 68 ng/g. The primary origins of these anthropogenic hydrocarbons in the lagoon sediments were petroleum products (boat engine discharges, boat washing, lubricants, and wastewater flows) and plasticizers (plastic waste and litter). The proportions of anthropogenic hydrocarbons derived from petroleum products in the sediment's TEOM ranged from 43 ± 33 to 62 ± 15%, while the percentages for plasticizers varied from 2.9 ± 1.2 to 4.0 ± 1.6%. The presence and inputs of these contaminants from petroleum and plastic wastes in the lagoon's sediments will eventually have an impact on its habitats, including the benthic nursery and spawning areas.
