Abstract The electronic structures of four semiconductor compounds BaCu2S2, BaCu2Se2, BaAg2S2, and BaAg2Se2 are studied by density functional theory using both semi-local and hybrid functionals. The ionization energies and electron affinities were determined by aligning the electronic states with the vacuum level by calculating the electrostatic profile within a supercell slab model. The ionization energy and electron affinity of the compounds were calculated using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof functionals and range from 4.5 eV to 5.4 eV and 3.1 eV to 3.4 eV, respectively. The replacement of Cu by Ag slightly increases the ionization energy and electron affinity, while the replacement of S by Se decreases the ionization energy but slightly increases the electron affinity. Overall, the low ionization energies and small electron affinities suggest that these compounds possess good p-type doping propensities. The band gaps are somewhat small to be ideal candidates for transparent semiconducting behavior; however, the replacement of Cu with Ag in the barium sulfide compounds can increase the band gap from 1.62 to 2.01 eV.

Abstract Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) with co-registered ultrasound (US) is a hybrid non-invasive imaging modality that enables visualization and quantification of tumor hypoxia in live animals. Here, using a breast tumor xenograft model as an example, we present a stepwise protocol describing animal preparation, positioning, instrument setup, and US-PAI image acquisition procedures. This protocol also guides through detailed data analysis, explains functional readouts obtained from PAI, and discusses the potential application of the technology to study the hypoxic tumor microenvironment. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Dai et al.

Abstract Background: Literature has emphasized the role of biopsychosocial factors in internalizing disorders; however, the role of developmental competencies of a child have not been explored much in this context. The current study aimed to understand the differences in developmental competencies, temperament, parenting practices and psychosocial adversities between children with and without internalizing disorders.
Method: The sample consisted of 200 children and adolescents aged seven to 18 years, with equal number of those with and without an internalizing disorder; and one of their parents. Psychopathology, temperament, interpersonal competence, emotion regulation, executive function, self-concept, adaptive behaviour, parenting practices, life events, family environment and abnormal psychosocial situations were measured using standardized tools.
Findings: Discriminant analysis revealed that temperamental domains of sociability and rhythmicity, developmental competencies of adaptive behaviour and self-concept, parenting practices involving father's involvement and overall positive parenting differentiated the clinical and control groups better. Among psychosocial adversities, family environment domains of cohesion and organization, and subjective stress from life events and abnormal psychosocial situations were the most important discriminators.
Conclusion: The current study reveals that specific individual factors involving temperament and developmental competencies and environmental factors involving parenting practices and psychosocial adversities are significantly associated with internalizing disorders. This has implications for the mental health care of children and adolescents with internalizing disorders.

Abstract This paper presents a dual-wavelength absorption-based approach for measuring and validating the steam dryness fraction of wet steam. A thermally insulated steam cell with a temperature-controlled measurement window (up to 200°C) is designed and fabricated to minimize condensation during water vapor measurements at different operating pressures (1-10 bars). Water vapor's measurement sensitivity and accuracy are limited due to other absorbing and non-absorbing species in wet steam. The measurement accuracy is significantly improved with the proposed dual-wavelength absorption technique (DWAT) measurement method. The influence of modifying factors-namely, pressure and temperature-on water vapor absorbance is minimized by a non-dimensional correction factor. The dryness is measured with the help of the water vapor concentration and wet steam mass present in the steam cell. The DWAT dryness measurement approach is validated using a four-stage separating and throttling calorimeter combined with a condensation rig. The accuracy of the dryness measurement system using this optical method is determined to be ±1

Abstract Urbanization results in complex and variable changes to environmental conditions, which translate to shifts in selection pressures for organisms. Size of a city as well as the intensity and extent of urbanization can synergistically influence how organisms are impacted. However, less is known about how landscape heterogeneity, rate of land-use change, and scale of urbanization affect species persistence. We evaluate the ways in which urbanization changes the environment and examine how some of these environmental factors influence the presence of the lizard

Abstract Background: Multiple debilitating symptoms and the progressive nature of Parkinson's disease (PD) affect carepartners' quality of life. Although, there is abundant knowledge on caregiver burden there is limited knowledge on PD carepartners' perceptions of caregiving.
Aim: To understand family members' perception of their role, and of the challenges and rewards of PD caregiving.
Method: Using a qualitative descriptive research design, we conducted semi-structured interviews with current and former PD carepartners
    Results: We identified 5 themes:
Conclusions: Despite challenges PD carepartners view their role as "partners" in the management of the disease and find meaning and strength in caregiving. A palliative care approach emphasizing the positives and challenges of caregiving may provide carepartners with better support.
