    Abstract In this paper I regard the Securitate (the Romanian secret police) as an epistemic form through which the socialist state gathered knowledge about reality, while it also performatively sought to create reality in keeping with its ideological presuppositions. More generally I suggest that the Securitate was in fact a form of (social) science deployed by the state in relation to its subjects. Just as any instrument of knowledge, the work of the Securitate was not simply descriptive but also, in the process, it aimed to shape its very object of inquiry. The Securitate was one of the institutions, central no doubt, through which the Romanian socialist state sought to define and protect its own, new, version of reality and social order. From this perspective, far from being an outcome of the socialist power, the secret police was what constituted that power to define and bring into being a new reality. In this process the secret agents played the role of anthropologists of the new world.

    Abstract In this paper, I suggest an alternative form of periodization of Romanian history. My aim is not to move around historical posts; rather I propose a different way of understanding Romanian history as such. This is the research agenda. I seek to write a world history from the perspective of a peripheral place like Romania has been. Therefore, this is not simply an attempt to insert a local, neglected, silenced or distorted history into a wider, European, global story (that is, to discover the history of “people without history”), just as it is not another attempt to “provincialize Europe” in favour of a view from its repressed margins. Instead, following Coronil (2004), I believe it is indispensable to globalize the periphery, to understand its worldwide formation. My investigation draws upon the conceptual toolkit of world-system theory and its underlining philosophy of history (Wallerstein, 2011). In the same vein, the guiding principles of my periodization elaborate on Andre Gunder Frank’s insight that the exchange (or rather direct transfer) of surplus between societies is what links regions and societies as whole (Frank, 1978). The focus then shifts from a given society/state and its internal relations to the wider world-system, or world-economy, in which it is embedded. The unit of analysis is not a geographical location, but relations and networks and their historical development.

    Abstract The present study was purported to assess the activities: (i) antibacterial and synergistic against three types of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria that are susceptible to drug resistance and (ii) cytotoxic and synergistic on colorectal adenocarcinoma cells, of thyme essential oil (TEo) in combination with tetracycline (Tcyc). Chemical composition of thyme essential oil was evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method, antioxidant capacity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) assay, antibacterial and synergistic properties were determined by disk diffusion method and cytotoxic activity by quantifying viable cells by using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Thyme essential oil has an elevated antioxidant activity, antibacterial potential against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, especially on S. aureus and K. pneumoniae at the highest concentration tested (50µL/mL), also having a synergistic effect when combined with tetracycline (50µL/mL TEo with 10µg/mL Tcyc). Essential oil-treated cells showed a dose-dependent reduction in colorectal adenocarcinoma cell viability, while combination with tetracycline leads to a significantly attenuated decrease in viability.

    Abstract Introduction: There is a growing body of literature separately linking lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) with various factors such as paravertebral muscle (PVM) impaired function/morphology, lordosis or BMI. However, their interplay is yet to be known. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between PVM morphology, BMI and lumbar lordosis in a population with a surgical indication for LSS.
    Materials and methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted on a group of 122 patients diagnosed with LSS in a hospital setting and scheduled for spine surgery. Epidemiological data and body mass index (BMI) were gathered. The cross-sectional area of the psoas muscle (rCSA) at the L4-L5 disc level on preoperative axial T2 MRI was measured. Fat infiltration of the anterior (APVM) and posterior paravertebral muscles (PPVM) was evaluated according to Goutallier classification while the severity of lumbar stenosis was staged according to Schizas criteria. Lumbar lordosis was measured on sagittal MRI using Cobb's angle method. The presence of the "rising psoas" sign was also noted. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using Pearson and Spearman correlations.
    Results: Statistical analysis revealed a moderate correlation between the severity of LSS and BMI (p = 0.001), and fatty infiltration of paravertebral muscles (p = 0.000, p = 0.000). Adjusting for age, gender, and BMI resulted in a low correlation (p = 0.003, p = 0.045), rCSA correlated negatively with age, gender, and lordosis. BMI had a low positive correlation with lumbar lordosis (p = 0.006), severity (p = 0.001), number of levels (p = 0.005) and PPVM (p = 0.031).
    Conclusions: This study highlighted the relationship between PVM morphology and the severity of radiological signs in patients with LSS undergoing spine surgery and found a correlation independent of age, gender, and BMI. BMI was also shown to correlate with the severity after controlling for age and gender. rCSA has limited use in evaluating the severity of LSS.

    Abstract Purpose: Long time recognized as a cause of lumbar stenosis, degenerative spondylolisthesis has an evolution in interrelation with sagittal balance. This study aimed to assess the role of ALIF in correcting the sagittal balance in patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis.
    Material and methods: Twenty patients aged between 47 and 70 years were operated between July 2011 and September 2014 for degenerative spondylolisthesis by ALIF. The pre-operative and post-operative valid standing full spine radiographs were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical and radiological evaluations were conducted pre-operatively and postoperatively at one year and five years.
    Results: Lumbar lordosis (LL) was measured to 41.16 ± 14.25° pre-operatively and 47.27 ± 11.25° post-operatively (p > 0.05). At one year was 49.76 ± 13.31° and at five years 46.93 ± 9.26° (p > 0.05). Mean gain of lordosis after ALIF at index level was calculated to 8 ± 1.6° [4-12°].
    Conclusions: ALIF offers a good reduction of the slipped vertebra providing good conditions for fusion and is an efficient surgical technique to recreate the sagittal spine balance.

    Abstract Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most frequent entrapment syndrome in the upper limb after carpal tunnel syndrome. Clinical features are validated through electromyographic and sonographic examination. Although the two aforementioned entrapment syndromes share common pathophysiological traits, the conservative treatment approach for mild and moderate cases of UNE differs from that for median nerve entrapment. The present study identified 23 different types of scientific articles aimed to address this issue. The research stressed the importance of patient education and activity modification. Night splinting offers clinical and functional improvement. Although corticosteroid injections play a role in selected cases, their utility remains to be validated. Physiotherapy trials evaluated ultrasound, low-level laser therapy, diathermy, extracorporeal shock wave therapy and dry cupping. Neurodynamic mobilization may add value to therapeutic approaches and should be a part of it.

    Abstract Antibiotics are considered as a cornerstone of modern medicine and their discovery offers the resolution to the infectious diseases problem. However, the excessive use of antibiotics worldwide has generated a critical public health issue and the bacterial resistance correlated with antibiotics inefficiency is still unsolved. Finding novel therapeutic approaches to overcome bacterial resistance is imperative, and natural compounds with antibacterial effects could be considered a promising option. The role played by antibiotics in tumorigenesis and their interrelation with the microbiota are still debatable and are far from being elucidated. Thus, the present manuscript offers a global perspective on antibiotics in terms of evolution from a historical perspective with an emphasis on the main classes of antibiotics and their adverse effects. It also highlights the connection between antibiotics and microbiota, focusing on the dual role played by antibiotics in tumorigenesis. In addition, using the natural compounds with antibacterial properties as potential alternatives for the classical antibiotic therapy is discussed.
