Abstract The purpose of this work was to investigate the several functional characteristics of Lactobacillus sakei JK-17 isolated from long-term fermented Kimchi, Muk Eun Ji. Initially, phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA sequencing was performed to identify the isolate JK-17 and the strain could be assigned to Lactobacillus sakei and designated as L. sakei JK-17. The strain was registered in Genbank as9JX841311). The changes of bacterial growth and residual organic acids were monitored and HPLC was used to measure auantitatively two organic acids, lactic acid and acetic acid, produced in the culture during 84 hours of incubation . During the incubation period, several functional characteristics of L. sakei JK-17 were examined. L. sakei JK-17 culture depleted nitrite concentraion 94.75% . Antioxidant activity of cultural supernantants of L. sakei JK-17 was approx. 53.8%, and b-galactosidase activities were 0.243 units/mL at pH 7.0 and 0.387 units/mL at pH 4.1, respectively. The antibacterial activities against food-poisoning causing bacteria were examined with 20-fold concentrated culture supernatants from L. sakei JK-17 and the antibacterial effects were clearly observed against all bacteria tested in this work.

Abstract Purpose: To observe the rate of progressive retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning in the unaffected eyes of patients with unilateral normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), in comparison with that of healthy subjects, and to identify the factors associated with progressive RNFL thinning.
    Design: Retrospective, longitudinal, observational study.
Participants: Ninety-five patients with unilateral NTG and 61 healthy controls METHODS: This study included unilateral NTG and healthy control subjects who were followed up for longer than 4 years and in whom at least 5 reliable RNFL thickness (RNFLT) measurements were performed using optical coherence tomography. Factors associated with the rate of thinning of the unaffected eyes of unilateral NTG patients were identified using regression analysis.
Main outcome measures: The rate of progressive RNFL thinning and the associated factors.
Results: RNFLT decreased significantly in both the unaffected eyes of unilateral NTG patients and the healthy eyes (both P<0.001). The RNFL thinning was significantly faster in the unaffected eyes of unilateral NTG patients than in the healthy eyes (P<0.001), specifically in the temporal-inferior sector (P=0.003). Factors associated with faster RNFL thinning in the unaffected eyes of unilateral NTG patients were thicker baseline RNFL of the unaffected eyes (P=0.002) and a worse visual field (VF) mean deviation (MD) in the NTG eyes (P=0.040). In the healthy controls, the rate of RNFL thinning in the contralateral eyes was the only factor associated with faster thinning (P=0.007).
Conclusions: The unaffected eyes of unilateral NTG patients showed faster RNFL thinning than healthy control eyes, more obviously in the temporal-inferior sector, and were likely to progress faster when they had a thicker baseline RNFL, and when the NTG eyes had a worse VF MD. In unilateral NTG patients, initiation of prophylactic treatment could be considered for the unaffected eyes when they are accompanied by a risk of developing glaucoma.

Abstract Prompt medical attention is crucial for congenital intracranial vascular malformations in children and newborns due to potential severe outcomes. Imaging is pivotal for accurate identification, given the diverse risks and treatment strategies. This article aims to enhance the identification and understanding of congenital intracranial vascular abnormalities including arteriovenous malformation, arteriovenous fistula, cavernous malformation, capillary telangiectasia, developmental venous anomaly, and sinus pericranii in pediatric patients.

Abstract Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging and less invasive treatment modality for various types of cancer. This review provides an overview of recent trends in PDT research, ranging from basic research to ongoing clinical trials, focusing on different cancer types. Lung cancer, head and neck cancer, non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer are discussed in this context. In lung cancer, porfimer sodium, chlorin e6, and verteporfin have shown promising results in preclinical studies and clinical trials. For head and neck cancer, PDT has demonstrated effectiveness as an adjuvant treatment after surgery. PDT with temoporfin, redaporfin, photochlor, and IR700 shows potential in early stage larynx cancer and recurrent head and neck carcinoma. Non-melanoma skin cancer has been effectively treated with PDT using methyl aminolevulinate and 5-aminolevulinic acid. In prostate cancer and breast cancer, PDT research is focused on developing targeted photosensitizers to improve tumor-specific uptake and treatment response. In conclusion, PDT continues to evolve as a promising cancer treatment strategy, with ongoing research spanning from fundamental investigations to clinical trials, exploring various photosensitizers and treatment combinations. This review sheds light on the recent advancements in PDT for cancer therapy and highlights its potential for personalized and targeted treatments.
