Abstract Water diverted from rivers for irrigation areas often contains large amounts of nitrogen (N), which is frequently overlooked and its role in contributing to N pollution is unknown. To investigate the influence of water diversion on N in different systems within irrigation areas, we developed and optimized the N footprint model, taking into account the N carried by irrigation water diversion and drainage in irrigated areas. This optimized model can serve as a reference for evaluating N pollution in other irrigated areas. By analyzing 29 years (1991-2019) of statistical data from a diverted irrigation area in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (Ningxia), China, the study assessed the contribution of water diversion to N in agriculture, animal husbandry, and human domestic activities. The results demonstrated that water diversion and drainage accounted for 10.3% and 13.8% in whole system, of the total N input and output in Ningxia, highlighting the potential N pollution risks associated with these activities. Additionally, the use of fertilizers in the plant subsystem, feed in the animal subsystem, and sanitary sewage in the human subsystem represented the main sources of N pollution in each subsystem. On a temporal scale, the study found that N loss increased year by year before reaching a stable level, indicating that N loss had reached its peak in Ningxia. The correlation analysis suggested that rainfall could regulate N input and output in irrigated areas by showing a negative correlation with water diversion, agricultural water consumption, and N from irrigated areas. Moreover, the study revealed that the amount of N brought by water diverted from rivers for irrigation should be taken into account when calculating the amount of fertilizer N required in the irrigation area.

Abstract Jiangshui is a traditional spontaneously fermented food in Northwest China; however, there is a lack of relevant documentation of Jiangshui from the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (NHAR), which is an important region in Northwest China. This study used the MIDI microbial identification system (MIDI MIS) and found that bacteria accounted for the highest proportion in NHAR Jiangshui and further gram-positive bacteria were higher than gram-negative bacteria. Fungi were the second-largest proportion. Furthermore, Illumina Novaseq sequencing technology was used to examine the bacterial diversity in NHAR Jiangshui. Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla and Lactobacillus was the dominant genus. Also, there were some opportunistic pathogens in minor proportion. More importantly, the samples from different regions and fermentation time showed insignificant differences in the bacterial community. This study presents a new insight of microbial community structure analysis of fermented foods.

Abstract Background: Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is an important cattle breeding area in China, and cattle breeding bases are located in this area. In Ningxia, dermatophytes have not been paid attention to, so dermatophytosis is becoming more and more serious. For effective control measures, it is important to determine the disease prevalence and isolate and identify the pathogenic microorganism.
Results: The study showed the prevalence of dermatophytes was 15.35% (74/482). The prevalence in calf was higher than adult cattle (p < 0.05). The morbidity was the highest in winter compared with autumn (p < 0.0001), summer (p < 0.05) and spring (p < 0.0001). The prevalence in Guyuan was the highest compared with Yinchuan (p < 0.05) and Shizuishan (p < 0.05). The incidence of lesions on the face, head, neck, trunk and whole body was 20.43, 38.71, 20.43, 10.75 and 9.68%, respectively. From all samples, the isolation rate of Trichophyton was highest (61.1%). The phylogenetic tree constructed showed that the 11 pathogenic fungi were on the same branch as Trichophyton verrucosum.
Conclusions: This study reports, for the first time, the presence of Trichophyton verrucosum in cattle in Ningxia and showed that the incidence of dermatophytosis is related to different regions, ages and seasons. A better knowledge of the prevalence of dermatophytosis of cattle may allow the adoption of more efficient control measures and prophylaxis.

Abstract Recently, cross-cultural facial-expression recognition has become a research hotspot, and a standardised facial-expression material system can significantly help researchers compare and demonstrate the results of other studies. We developed a facial-expression database of Chinese Han, Hui and Tibetan ethnicities. In this study, six basic human facial expressions (and one neutral expression) were collected from 200 Han, 220 Hui and 210 Tibetan participants who lived in these regions. Four experts on each ethnicity evaluated the facial-expression images according to the expressions, and only those achieving inter-rater agreement were retained. Subsequently, 240 raters evaluated these images according to the seven emotions and rated the intensity of the expressions. Consequently, 2980 images were included in the database, including 930 images of Han individuals, 962 images of Hui individuals and 1088 images of Tibetan individuals. In conclusion, the facial-expression database of Chinese Han, Hui and Tibetan people was representative and reliable with a recognition rate of over 60%, making it well-suited for cross-cultural research on emotions.

Abstract Objectives: To study the resorption of the herniated lumbar disc (RHLD) and its mechanism in the SD rats of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation treated with Hui medicine moxibustion (HMM).
Methods: Forty SD rats were randomly divided into four groups, normal group, lumbar disc herniation (LDH) group, HMM group, and antagonist (HMM+Met12) group, with 10 rats in each group. The rat model of LDH was prepared with the method of lumbar epidural emplacement of the caudal intervertebral disc. In the HMM group and HMM+Met12 groups, 4 weeks after modeling, HMM therapy was performed in the lumbar spine for 3 months with 1 time per day and 20 min each time, the samples were collected 8 weeks after the treatment. The histological degeneration was observed through HE staining, and the neovascularization of intervertebral disc tissues was detected by the expression of CD34 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The apoptosis of nucleus pulpous cells was detected by TUNEL assay, and the activity of caspase-3, -8, and -9 and extracellular matrix enzymes was detected by western blotting.
Results: HMM treatment significantly improved the behavioral ability of rats with LDH surgery. The morphological structure was obviously destroyed in the LDH group, but disc structure was significantly repaired in the HMM group, and mild structure alterations were observed in the HMM+Met12 group. Higher levels of CD34 and VEGF were detected in the HMM group indicating that neovascularization is formed. The expression level of FasL was significantly increased in the HMM group. The protein expression levels of cleaved-caspase-3, cleaved-caspase-8, and cleaved-caspase-9 in nucleus pulposus (NP) tissues were also elevated when treated with HMM, and the TUNEL staining showed the same results. The protein expression levels of matrix metalloproteinases- (MMP-) 1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-13, and ADAMTS-4 were markedly promoted in the HMM group. Met12, a small peptide antagonist of FasL, significantly reduced the effects of HMM.
Conclusion: HMM can promote the formation of neovascularization of lumbar intervertebral disc, support the apoptosis of NP cells through Fas/FasL signaling, and regulate the degradation of extracellular matrix enzyme, which then accelerates the absorption of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation and the recovery of motor function in rats.

Abstract Background: Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is a highly contagious cattle pathogen spreading worldwide and especially in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in China.
Results: Two types of ST, ST10and ST134, were identified in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Thirty-seven strains belonged to ST10 and 28 strains belonged to ST134. ST134 was a new ST and first found in 2009 and was only widely distributed in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region at present. The M. bovis ST10 was widely spread in many provinces in China and was widespread in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region since 2010. It is speculated that the prevalence of M. bovis ST10 in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region began in 2010.
Conclusions: This study is the first report on the genetic diversity of M. bovis from 2009 to 2018 in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and provides the epidemiological information. These results may help further our understanding of the evolution of M. bovis and provide information that may be useful for the development of novel vaccines.

Abstract The Hui group is the second largest ethnic minority and one of the most widespread ethnic groups in China. However, the genetic architecture of the Hui population remains largely unexplored, particularly with respect to the male-specific region of the Y chromosome. Here, we studied nine Hui populations (Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Henan, Shandong, Sichuan, Yunnan) using 157 Y-chromosome single nucleotide polymorphisms (Y-SNPs) and 27 short tandem repeats (Y-STRs) to unravel their genetic substructure and forensic characteristics. A total of 650 unrelated male samples from the Hui populations were genotyped by SNaPshot
