Abstract The federal government now has additional powers to override patents for drugs, vaccines and medical equipment as needed to secure critical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic Amendments to the Patent Act under Canada's COVID-19 Emergency Response Act make it possible for the federal government-or anyone it designates-to make, use and sell patented inventions "to the extent necessary to respond to a public health emergency " Effectively, the act enables Ottawa to combat price gouging or shortages of any needed product, from vaccines to ventilators, by licensing companies to make generic copies of brand-name products without having to negotiate with patent holders These compulsory licenses would last only a year, and patent holders would receive "adequate" compensation, to be determined after the fact

Abstract A review into 53 deaths at Nova Scotias largest long-term care facility highlights critical staff shortages, problems isolating residents infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and difficulty accessing infection control specialists during the first wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic According to the review, the size and complexity of the 500-bed facility made Northwood especially susceptible to staff loss and infection spread Other recommendations for the facility, health system and government include: * Creating a communication plan to let residents, families and staff know what information theyll get in an emergency, and when;* Improving ventilation in bathrooms;* Setting and funding a minimum number of hours of direct care;* Increasing supplies of protective equipment for long-term care staff;* Establishing a mobile infection control team and ensuring that disaster response teams have the power to override obstructive legislation;* Increasing support for medical officers of health for contact tracing and analytic modelling;and * Mandating the collection, reporting and analysis of morbidity and mortality data by facility

Abstract Family doctors in Canada, who are worried about potential exposure to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), are using social media to swap patterns for face masks and reusable gowns, while decrying a shortage of personal protective equipment Family doctor and palliative care physician Dr Carola Collins conveys that she got an update that if she does a home visit, she is expected to put a mask on herself and wear an isolation gown and a face shield But she has no isolation gowns, no face shields and, until earlier this week when she began making her own out of quilting scraps, she was down to her last three surgical masks She can't find any equipment and is concerned about transferring the virus during her work in the community, especially when visiting palliative patients at homes Other community doctors in a 7000-member Facebook group are posting about equipment shortages and sharing sources for reusable gowns and do-it-yourself face shields And Collins' nursing colleagues in Ontario, especially those who conduct home visits, have complained of similar equipment shortages
