Abstract In this paper, we introduce an R package that performs automated photo editing effects. Specifically, it is an R implementation of an image-processing algorithm proposed by Boyadzhiev et al. (2015). The software allows the user to manipulate the appearance of objects in photographs, such as emphasizing facial blemishes and wrinkles, smoothing the skin, or enhancing the gloss of fruit. It provides a reproducible method to quantitatively control specific surface properties of objects (e.g., gloss and roughness), which is useful for researchers interested in topics related to material perception, from basic mechanisms of perception to the aesthetic evaluation of faces and objects. We describe the functionality, usage, and algorithm of the method, report on the findings of a behavioral evaluation experiment, and discuss its usefulness and limitations for psychological research. The package can be installed via CRAN, and documentation and source code are available at https://github.com/tsuda16k/materialmodifier .

Abstract Chemoselective α-acylation of tertiary amides proceeded with highly electrophilic acid anhydrides and weak bases under mild conditions. β-Ketoamides containing trifluoroacetyl or perfluoroacyl groups were selectively obtained even in the presence of other functional groups such as ketone, ester, etc. Density functional theory calculations suggest that 1-acyloxyenamine is the key intermediate for the chemoselective α-acylation.

Abstract Developed by Mitsui Chemicals Agro, Inc. (Tokyo, Japan), quinofumelin is a novel fungicide with a distinct chemical structure including 3-(isoquinolin-1-yl) quinoline, demonstrating fungicidal activity against a variety of fungi, including rice blast and gray mold. We screened our compound library to identify curative compounds for rice blast and evaluated the effect of fungicide-resistant strains of gray mold. Our research demonstrated that quinofumelin has curative effects against rice blast and is not cross-resistant to existing fungicides. Accordingly, the use of quinofumelin can be considered a novel approach for disease control in agricultural production. In this report, the discovery of quinofumelin from the initial compound is described in detail.

Abstract Isoxazoloazaborines 3 and 5 have been synthesized from 4-N-propargylaminoisoxazole 1via gold(i)-catalyzed propargyl aza-Claisen rearrangement followed by electrophilic borylative cyclization in 27–86% yields. In situ generation of isoxazole 2 having an amino group and allenyl functionality is essential to give highly substituted isoxazoloazaborines 3 and 5, although the conventional propargyl aza-Claisen rearrangement readily affords the corresponding nitrogen-containing heterocycles, such as pyridines and pyrroles. The resulting isoxazoloazaborine 5a underwent the N–O bond insertion of zinc carbenoid to give oxazine-fused azaborine 6 in 48% yield.

Abstract A phenotyping pipeline utilising DeepLab was developed for precisely estimating the height, volume, coverage and vegetation indices of European and Japanese varieties. Using this pipeline, the effect of varying UAV height on the precise estimation of potato crop growth properties was evaluated. A UAV fitted with a multispectral camera was flown at a height of 15 m and 30 m in an experimental field where various varieties of potatoes were grown. The properties of plant height, volume and NDVI were evaluated and compared with the manually obtained parameters. Strong linear correlations with R

Abstract Predictive pattern mining is an approach used to construct prediction models when the input is represented by structured data, such as sets, graphs, and sequences. The main idea behind predictive pattern mining is to build a prediction model by considering unified inconsistent notation sub-structures, such as subsets, subgraphs, and subsequences (referred to as patterns), present in the structured data as features of the model. The primary challenge in predictive pattern mining lies in the exponential growth of the number of patterns with the complexity of the structured data. In this study, we propose the safe pattern pruning method to address the explosion of pattern numbers in predictive pattern mining. We also discuss how it can be effectively employed throughout the entire model building process in practical data analysis. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct numerical experiments on regression and classification problems involving sets, graphs, and sequences.

Abstract Antifreeze glycoprotein (AFGP), which inhibits the freezing of water, is highly O-glycosylated with a disaccharide, d-Galβ1-3-d-GalNAcα (GalGalNAc). To elucidate the function of the sugar residues for antifreeze activity at the molecular level, we conducted a total chemical synthesis of partially sugar deleted AFGP derivatives, and unnatural forms of AFGPs incorporating glucose (Glc)-type sugars instead of galactose (Gal)-type sugars. These elaborated AFGP derivatives demonstrated that the stereochemistry of each sugar residue on AFGPs precisely correlates with the antifreeze activity. A hydrogen-deuterium exchange experiment using synthetic AFGPs revealed a different dynamic behavior of water around sugar residues depending on the sugar structures. These results indicate that sugar residues on AFGP form a unique dynamic water phase that disturbs the absorbance of water molecules onto the ice surface, thereby inhibiting freezing.
