Abstract Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exhibit immune-suppressive properties, follow a pattern of multilineage differentiation, and exhibit transdifferentiation potential. Ease in expansion from adult bone marrow, as well as its separation from ethical issues, makes MSCs appealing for clinical application. MSCs treated with retinoic acid resulted in synaptic transmission, based on immunostaining of synaptophysin and electrophysiological studies. In situ hybridization indicated that the neurotransmitter gene preprotachykinin-I was expressed in these cells. However, translation of this gene only occurred after stimulation with interleukin (IL)-1 alpha. This effect was blunted by costimulation with IL-1 receptor antagonist. This study reports on the ability of MSCs to be transdifferentiated into neurons with functional synapses with the potential to become polarized towards producing specific neurotransmitters.

Abstract Acetic anhydride mediates a facile and rapid condensation of benzimidazole with aromatic o-diacid dichlorides to precipitate p-dione adducts in excellent yields. Condensation with pyridine-3,4-dicarbonyl dichloride produced a 1:1 mixture of isomeric p-diones. The X-ray crystal structure of one of the latter isomers revealed unusual high density, and inter-layer separation similar to graphite. Cyclic voltammetry demonstrated that p-dione is capable of two consecutive one-electron-reductions with formal potentials influenced by the fused (hetero)aromatic and substituent effects.

Abstract Introduction: The use of diagnostic imaging services is increasing worldwide. This has important impacts on healthcare resource allocation and potential risks to the population. This study aimed to quantify trends in medical imaging in Australia over the past two decades.
Methods: Data were extracted from the Australian Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) between 2000 and 2021. Simple linear regression analyses were performed to assess changes in absolute utilisation and utilisation rate per 100,000 population of total imaging services as well as by each imaging modality. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess changes in total imaging services as a proportion of total Medicare services over time. Chi-squared test was used to assess for change in modality composition of imaging services.
Results: There were 436,255,500 imaging studies performed between 2000 and 2021. The absolute utilisation of total imaging services increased annually by an average of 864,404 (95% CI: 808,235-920,573, p < 0.001). For each consecutive year, the proportion of total Medicare services attributed to total imaging services increased by 0.01% (95% CI: 0.01-0.01, p < 0.01). There was also a statistically significant increase in the utilisation rates of imaging services per 100,000 population for each imaging modality. The number of imaging services per radiologist increased on average by 74 (95% CI: 26-122, p < 0.05) annually.
Conclusion: The utilisation of diagnostic imaging services has increased in Australia between 2000 and 2021, outpacing the population growth, total healthcare services, and the radiologist workforce.

Abstract Background: Studies in adult chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) showed poor correlation between patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and objective findings. Our goal is to study the correlation between the sinus and nasal quality of life (SN-5) and the 22-items sinonasal outcome test (SNOT-22) surveys with endoscopy findings in children with chronic adenoiditis (CA) and CRS.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of all pediatric patients (age 2-18) presenting for CA or CRS was performed. Patients and caregivers were asked to fill the SN-5 and SNOT-22 questionnaires at initial and follow up visits. Demographics and comorbidities were collected. Objective findings included endoscopy Modified Lund-Kennedy (MLK) scores and adenoid tissue size.
Results: 124 children were included, with mean age of 9.9 years (SD = 4.8) and 46.8% female. 36.3% had allergic rhinitis, 23.4% had asthma, and 4% had obstructive sleep apnea. Moderate correlation was found between the rhinologic domain of SNOT-22 and MLK scores (r = 0.36, p = 0.001) and between SN5 scores and adenoid size in all patients (r = 0.39, p < 0.001). SNOT-22 scores showed moderate correlation with adenoid size (r = 0.42, p < 0.001) more specifically in CA patients (r = 0.54, p < 0.001). The correlation of SN5 and MLK scores were higher in children with allergic rhinitis or asthma. The correlation between SN5 and adenoid size was lower in children with allergic rhinitis or asthma.
Conclusion: There is discrepancy between the subjective measures and the objective findings in children with CA or CRS. The physical exam findings may not reflect the effect of CRS on the quality of life of children.

Abstract The solvent-free elimination of sulfinic acid and aromatization of 1,6-trans-substituted bis(arylsulfone) trienes is reported. It is shown that sublimation can be used as a 'green' method to combine the thermal transformation of six trienes and the crystal growth of the resulting 4-(phenylsulfonyl)biphenyls. When the sublimation conditions are carefully controlled, high quality single crystals of the 4-(phenylsulfonyl)biphenyls are obtained. Theoretical modelling of the reaction using the simplified triene Ph-(CH)6-SO2H showed that the cyclization is energetically feasible and that the complete conversion is possible during the timescale of the sublimation. At temperatures slightly higher than the optimum sublimation temperature two of the trienes transformed into 1,4-cyclohexadienes that did not eliminate phenylsulfinic acid. A reaction mechanism involving a 1,3-hydrogen shift induced by free PhS. radicals is proposed for the formation of the 1,4-cyclohexadienes.

Abstract Amorphization is a well-established strategy to enhance the dissolution properties of poorly water-soluble drugs. However, the amorphous state is inherently unstable toward recrystallization. Coamorphous systems of a drug and a small-molecule excipient or of two complementary drugs often show an enhanced stability. Diabetes and hypertension are frequently coexistent. In this paper a study on the coamorphization of the poorly water-soluble antidiabetic drug gliclazide (glz) and the antihypertensive drug valsartan (val) is reported. Amorphous glz recrystallized after 1 d under ambient conditions, whereas coamorphous glz-val containing glz and val in a 1:1 or 1:2 molar ratio was stable for at least four months at 20 °C and 56% relative humidity. The dissolution rate of glz increased in the order crystalline glz < glz-val_1:1 < glz-val_1:2. Furthermore, ternary coamorphous systems of glz, val and an excipient were prepared; glz-val_1:1_PVP, glz-val_1:1_HPC, glz-val_1:1_ALM, glz-val_1:1_MCC (PVP = polyvinylpyrrolidone, HPC = hydroxypropyl cellulose, ALM = α-lactose monohydrate, MCC = microcrystalline cellulose). MCC and HPC did not affect the stability of the coamorphous system, while ALM promoted the recrystallization of glz in glz-val_1:1_ALM during storage and freshly prepared glz-val_1:1_PVP contained small amounts of crystalline glz. Glz-val_1:1_MCC showed enhanced dissolution properties compared to crystalline glz and glz-val_1:1 and is a viable fixed-dose formulation.

Abstract Dermatophagoides farinae is a frequent allergen in canine atopic dermatitis despite its reported scarcity in the UK, and the aim of this study was to determine whether dogs were uniquely exposed to this species. Der f 1 and Der p 1 in dust collected from living room carpets, bedroom carpets and dog beds of 13 houses with no dogs, 13 with healthy dogs, and 16 with Dermatophagoides-sensitized atopic dogs were quantified by ELISA. Der p 1 levels (microg g(-1) house dust) were significantly higher than Der f 1 in living rooms (Der p 1 median = 1.9, 95% CI = 2.05-6.32, n = 42; Der f 1 median = 0.07, 95% CI = 0.01-0.06, n = 42), bedrooms (Der p 1 median = 4.35, SD = 5.52; Der f 1 median = 0.01, 95% CI = 0.001-0.1, n = 42) and dog beds (Der p 1 median = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.4-8.1, n = 29; Der f 1 median = 0.008, 95% CI = 0.01-0.04, n = 29) (P < 0.0001). Living rooms in houses without dogs had significantly greater Der p 1 levels (median = 7.0, 95% CI = 3.53-15.8, n = 13) than houses with healthy (median = 1.19, 95% CI = 0.44-3.49, n = 13) or atopic dogs (median = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.63-2.42, n = 16) (P = 0.0004). Environmental flea control in living rooms and washing dog beds was associated with significantly reduced Der p 1 levels. This confirms that D. pteronyssinus is common but D. farinae is rare in the sampling area. Apparent sensitization to D. farinae is probably due to cross-reaction. A combination of environmental measures could reduce allergen exposure.

Abstract The increase in home improvement activity during the COVID-19 pandemic gave rise to concerns of increased asbestos exposure risk. This paper describes high-risk asbestos exposure groups based on current home improvement trends in Australia. A series of quantitative and qualitative studies were commissioned to better understand the attitudes, motivations, and behaviours of home improvers in Australia. In 2021, two in three Australian adults were inclined to undertake home improvement projects—big or small—with or without professional help, underscoring the importance of improving the asbestos safety knowledge and capacity of this cohort. The studies commissioned across 2020 and 2021 provide a deep analysis into this cohort, defining who they are and the segments that make up home improvers, their behaviours, and their asbestos awareness and attitudes. This knowledge enables the development and implementation of a range of targeted campaigns to increase asbestos awareness and prevent potential exposure to asbestos fibres.
