    Abstract Introduction: There is an increasing focus on the prevention of secondary injuries following traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI), especially through improvement of spinal cord perfusion and immunological modulation. Such therapeutic strategies require translational and controlled animal models of disease progression of the acute phases of human TSCI.
    Research question: Is it possible to establish a 72-h sedated porcine model of incomplete thoracic TSCI, enabling controlled use of continuous, invasive, and non-invasive modalities during the entire sub-acute phase of TSCI?
    Material and methods: A sham-controlled trial was conducted to establish the model, and 10 animals were assigned to either sham or TSCI. All animals underwent a laminectomy, and animals in the TSCI group were subjected to a weight-drop injury. Animals were then kept sedated for 72 h. The amount of injury was assessed by ex-vivo measures MRI-based fiber tractography, histology and immunohistochemistry.
    Results: In all animals, we were successful in maintaining sedation for 72 h without comprising vital physiological parameters. The MRI-based fiber tractography showed that all TSCI animals revealed a break in the integrity of spinal neurons, whereas histology demonstrated no transversal sections of the spine with complete injury. Notably, some animals displayed signs of secondary ischemic tissue in the cranial and caudal sections.
    Discussion and conclusions: This study succeeded in producing a porcine model of incomplete TSCI, which was physiologically stable up to 72 h. We believe that this TSCI model will constitute a potential translational model to study the pathophysiology secondary to TSCI in humans.

    Abstract Aims: Cardiogenic shock (CS) is known to induce an inflammatory response. The prognostic utility of this remains unclear. To investigate the association between C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and leucocyte count and mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by CS (AMICS).
    Methods and results: Consecutive patients (N = 1716) admitted between 2010 and 2017 with an individually validated diagnosis of AMICS were included. The analysis was restricted to patients alive at 48 h after first medical contact and a valid CRP and leucocyte measurement at 48 ± 12 h from the first medical contact. A combined inflammatory score for each patient was computed by summing the CRP and leucocyte count z-scores to normalize the response on a standard deviation scale. Associations with mortality were analysed using a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model stratified by inflammatory response quartiles: Of the 1716 patients in the cohort, 1111 (64.7%) fulfilled inclusion criteria. The median CRP level at 48 h was 145 mg/dL [interquartile range (IQR) 96-211]. The median leucocyte count was 12.6 × 10-9/L (IQR 10.1-16.4). Patients with the highest inflammatory response (Q4) had lower median left ventricular ejection fractions and higher lactate levels at the time of diagnosis. The 30-day all-cause mortality rates were 46% in Q4 and 21% in Q1 (P < 0.001). In multivariable models, the inflammatory response remained associated with mortality [hazard ratio (HR)Q4 2.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.59-3.39, P < 0.001]. The finding was also significant in AMICS patients presenting with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest following multivariable adjustment (HRQ4 3.37, 95% CI 2.02-4.64, P < 0.001).
    Conclusion: Cardiogenic shock induces an acute inflammatory response, the severity of which is associated with mortality.

    Abstract The observation of Higgs boson production in association with a top quark-antiquark pair is reported, based on a combined analysis of proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 5.1, 19.7, and 35.9  fb^{-1}, respectively. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The results of statistically independent searches for Higgs bosons produced in conjunction with a top quark-antiquark pair and decaying to pairs of W bosons, Z bosons, photons, τ leptons, or bottom quark jets are combined to maximize sensitivity. An excess of events is observed, with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations, over the expectation from the background-only hypothesis. The corresponding expected significance from the standard model for a Higgs boson mass of 125.09 GeV is 4.2 standard deviations. The combined best fit signal strength normalized to the standard model prediction is 1.26_{-0.26}^{+0.31}.

    Abstract Detailed mechanistic investigations on our previously reported synthesis of branched allylic esters by the rhodium complex-catalyzed propargylic C-H activation have been carried out. Based on initial mechanistic studies, we present herein more detailed investigations of the reaction mechanism. For this, various analytical (NMR, X-ray crystal structure analysis, Raman) and kinetic methods were used to characterize the formation of intermediates under the reaction conditions. The knowledge obtained by this was used to further optimize the previous conditions and generate a more active catalytic system.
