    Abstract Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases reverse cellular signals initiated by growth factors receptors and other tyrosine kinases by dephosphorylating phosphotyrosine on target proteins. The activity of these enzymes is crucial for maintaining cell homeostasis, yet these enzymes have been often dismissed as humble house-keeping proteins. Understandably, mutations and changes in expression patterns of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases are implicated in tumorigenesis and various carcinomas. The conserved nature of their catalytic domains makes drug discovery a challenging pursuit. In this review, we focus on describing the various classes of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases and their catalytic domains. We also summarize their role in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases using specific members as the model system. Finally, we explain the dichotomy in the biological role of catalytically active vs the pseudoenzyme forms of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases in the context of their membrane bound receptor forms. This chapter aims to provide a current understanding of these proteins, in the background of their foundational past research.

    Abstract A cross-sectional study was done to assess the degree of current awareness and behaviors about cervical cancer among females in urban and rural areas of North India. This survey was conducted on one thousand females (500 rural and 500 urban). A well-structured questionnaire was designed to collect information about participants' knowledge on cancer of cervix uteri such as age, height and weight measurements, marital status, menstrual status, personal hygiene, age at menarche, sexual history, pregnancy and abortion history, use of contraceptive pills for birth-control, smoking, alcohol consumption, and other relevant information. The data was collected by conducting face-to-face interviews after obtaining the verbal consent of the participants. The data has the potential to reduce disease burden by spreading awareness about symptoms and risk factors of cervical cancer as well as implementation of effective early screening strategies.

    Abstract Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is a lethal beta-coronavirus that emerged in 2012. The virus is part of the WHO blueprint priority list with a concerning fatality rate of 35%. Scientific efforts are ongoing for the development of vaccines, anti-viral and biotherapeutics, which are majorly directed toward the structural spike protein. However, the ongoing effort is challenging due to conformational instability of the spike protein and the evasion strategy posed by the MERS-CoV. In this study, we have expressed and purified the MERS-CoV pre-fusion spike protein in the Expi293F mammalian expression system. The purified protein was extensively characterized for its biochemical and biophysical properties. Thermal stability analysis showed a melting temperature of 58°C and the protein resisted major structural changes at elevated temperature as revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy and circular dichroism.     Abstract Labile plasma iron (LPI) levels are proposed as marker of iron overload in thalassemia patients and are also known to be the earliest parameter to indicate efficacy of chelation therapy. It was a prospective study in 35 patients of thalassemia major. Patients were recruited in two groups-group A (n = 13) patients not on chelation therapy and group B (n = 22) patients who were on regular oral chelation therapy. Ten age and gender matched healthy controls were also studied. For all patients, ferritin levels and LPI levels were measured at baseline, 6 months and 12 months. For group B patients paired samples for LPI were taken (before and 2 h after chelator). LPI levels were found to be significantly higher in group B patients versus group A patients versus normal healthy controls at all time-points. (

    Abstract Panax wangianus S. C. Sun (Araliaceae) is a critically endangered, medicinal plant of north-east India. The objective of this research was to study post-fertilization changes in embryo-sac of P. wangianus. A characteristic feature has been observed in the endosperm in P. wangianus in which both the nuclear and cellular endosperm remains together in the mature seeds. The embryo is present in the nuclear part of endosperm so that it can draw the nutrition easily. The embryo probably exerts some physical and physiological forces that prevent the nuclear endosperm to become cellular.

    Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the utility of Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in assessing treatment response in patients of intestinal tuberculosis (ITB).
    Method and materials: MR Enterography (MRE) was done for patients with suspicion of ITB and 19 patients with pre- and post-treatment imaging were included in the analysis. MRE included T1W, T2W, post-contrast T1W, and DWI sequences. DWI was done using b values-0, 400 and 800 s/mm
    Results: Thirty-one bowel segments were evaluated at baseline and after treatment in 19 patients. Prior to therapy, restricted diffusion was seen in 29/31 (93.5%) segments. After treatment, patients with either complete or partial response (27/31 segments, 15 patients) showed significant rise in mean ADC values from 1.1 ± 0.37 × 10
    Conclusion: ADC values show good correlation with treatment response in ITB and can be used for objectively quantifying it.
