Abstract Coastal flooding is an important current issue due to climate change and due to significant increases in anthropogenic pressures observed in the second half of the last century. Indeed, climate change has been causing an increase in the frequency and the intensity of various natural events such as floods and sea storms; anthropogenic pressures have caused an increase in impermeable surfaces with negative consequences on the vulnerability of territories under the action of natural events. In this paper, we analyze the effects of climate change in terms of possible increases in floodable areas and in terms of population, infrastructure, coastal dunes, and sites of social, economic, and strategic interest exposed along the coasts of the region of Calabria in southern Italy. Calabria was chosen as a case study due to its geomorphological peculiarities and its considerable anthropogenic pressures. These peculiarities cause significant variability of weather and sea conditions among the different coastal areas, which influences the coastal dynamics and the characteristics of meteorological events. The main results show that, in the analyzed areas, the floodable areas double between current and future scenarios, involving both significant percentages of the population and railways, highways, industrial areas, and coastal dunes.

Abstract In 1783, an event that has gone down in history as the great seismic crisis in Calabria began, during which two major earthquakes occurred, affecting the Calabrian ridge from the Strait to the north. Between 6 and 7 February in Scilla a tsunami occurred that caused the greatest number of victims in Italy: 1500 people. The mechanism that triggered the tsunami was the detachment of a ridge of rock due to a violent earthquake that affected the area; this detachment caused a subaerial landslide which, by sliding, then deposited the rock on the seabed a few kilometers from the coast, immediately generating the tsunami event. The objective of this study is to perform numerical simulations for tsunami events that occurred in history and use models that perform the propagation of a tsunami, using the best possible bathymetric and topographic data and the historical data to compare the validity of the results. In this way, one can obtain the validation of a model that can be used to simulate possible events of this magnitude on the Calabrian coasts and therefore be able to develop a reliable early warning tsunami system; it also has the advantage of perfectly combining computational burdens and the validity of results.

Abstract Bilevel-positive airway pressure (BiPAP) is a noninvasive respiratory support modality which reduces effort in patients with respiratory failure. However, it may increase tidal ventilation and transpulmonary pressure, potentially aggravating lung injury. We aimed to assess if the use of BiPAP before intubation was associated with increased mortality in adult patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who received venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). We used the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization Registry to analyze adult patients with COVID-19 supported with venovenous ECMO from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021. Patients treated with BiPAP were compared with patients who received other modalities of respiratory support or no respiratory support. A total of 9,819 patients from 421 centers were included. A total of 3,882 of them (39.5%) were treated with BiPAP before endotracheal intubation. Patients supported with BiPAP were intubated later (4.3 vs. 3.3 days, p < 0.001) and showed higher unadjusted hospital mortality (51.7% vs. 44.9%, p < 0.001). The use of BiPAP before intubation and time from hospital admission to intubation resulted as independently associated with increased hospital mortality (odds ratio [OR], 1.32 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.08-1.61] and 1.03 [1-1.06] per day increase). In ECMO patients with severe acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19, the extended use of BiPAP before intubation should be regarded as a risk factor for mortality.

Abstract This article presents a systematic literature review that expands and updates a previous review on the application of machine learning to laboratory medicine. We used Scopus and PubMed to collect, select and analyse the papers published from 2017 to the present in order to highlight the main studies that have applied machine learning techniques to haematochemical parameters and to review their diagnostic and prognostic performance. In doing so, we aim to address the question we asked three years ago about the potential of these techniques in laboratory medicine and the need to leverage a tool that was still under-utilised at that time.
