    Abstract A plausible approach to remediating petroleum contaminated soil is the integration of chemical and biological treatments. Using appropriate chemical oxidation, the integrated remediation can be effectively achieved to stimulate the biodegradation process, consequently bolstering the overall remediation effect. In this study, an integrated biological-chemical-biological strategy was proposed. Both conventional microbial degradation techniques and a modified Fenton method were employed, and the efficacy of this strategy on crude oil contaminated soil, as well as its impact on pollutant composition, soil environment, and soil microorganism, was assessed. The results showed that this integrated remediation realized an overall 68.3 % removal rate, a performance 1.7 times superior to bioremediation alone and 2.1 times more effective than chemical oxidation alone, elucidating that the biodegradation which had become sluggish was invigorated by the judicious application of chemical oxidation. By optimizing the positioning of chemical treatment, the oxidization was allowed to act predominantly on refractory substances like resins, thus effectively enhancing pollutant biodegradability. Concurrently, this oxidating maneuver contributed to a significant increase in concentrations of dissolvable nutrients while maintaining appropriate soil pH levels, thereby generating favorable growth conditions for microorganism. Moreover, attributed to the proliferation and accumulation of degrading bacteria during the initial bioremediation phase, the microbial growth subsequent to oxidation showed rapid resurgence and the relative abundance of typical petroleum-degrading bacteria, particularly Proteobacteria, was substantially increased, which played a significant role in enhancing overall remediation effect. Our research validated the feasibility of biological-chemical-biological strategy and elucidated its correlating mechanisms, presenting a salient reference for the further studies concerning the integrated remediation of petroleum contaminated soil.

    Abstract Pressures from the healthcare systems have led to decreased lengths of hospital stay and home-based long-term rehabilitation for the elderly hospitalized patients, while the elderly patients with home-based rehabilitation remain at high risk of hospital re-admission, adverse events and mortality. As the modern technology advances, previous research has proposed the concept of smart hospital and smart home for the elderly's health. However, no evidence of smart homes tailored to home-based rehabilitation for the elderly patients discharged from hospital is available. Moreover, how to link smart hospitals and smart homes to generate a joint environment for elderly patients' accelerated recovery, is a worthwhile endeavor. To address this important gap between smart hospitals and smart homes for the elderly who require home-based recovery after discharge, Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital recently initiated the development of a novel model, named smart home wards (SHWs). The SHWs may have the potential to extend homes as part of the hospital wards by breaking down the information silos between smart hospitals and smart homes, and eventually improve the elderly patients' health outcomes in a cost-effective approach for our aging population.

    Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated a long-term trend of smart hospital development. However, there is no consistent conceptualization of what a smart hospital entails. Few hospitals have genuinely reached being “smart,” primarily failing to bring systems together and consider implications from all perspectives. Hospital Intelligent Twins, a new technology integration powered by IoT, AI, cloud computing, and 5G application to create all-scenario intelligence for health care and hospital management. This communication presented a smart hospital for all-scenario intelligence by creating the hospital Intelligent Twins. Intelligent Twins is widely involved in medical activities. However, solving the medical ethics, protecting patient privacy, and reducing security risks involved are significant challenges for all-scenario intelligence applications. This exploration of creating hospital Intelligent Twins that can be a worthwhile endeavor to assess how to inform evidence-based decision-making better and enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes.

    Abstract Background: To evaluate the accuracy of different preoperative calculation methods of osteotomy size in ankylosing spondylitis with thoracolumbar or lumbar kyphosis and analyze its clinical significance.
    Methods: Twenty-two cases of AS patients with thoracolumbar or lumbar kyphosis, from January 2015 to December 2018, who underwent one-level SPO surgery in our hospital, were retrospectively reviewed. The sagittal parameters were measured at pre-operation and last follow up using Surgimap software, and theoretical values of sagittal parameters were calculated according to pre-operative PI. The osteotomy angles of different methods were measured using Surgimap software. Paired t test was used to for the statistical analysis.
    Results: The mean follow-up time of all patients was 30.00 [Formula: see text] 3.56 months. The osteotomy sites were located at T12 in 3 cases, L1 in 6 cases, L2 in 9 cases, and L3 in 4 cases. Compared to pre-operative sagittal parameters, post-operative PT, SS, LL, and SVA were significantly improved (P [Formula: see text] 0.05). Compared to the OVA (46.57 [Formula: see text] 2.32 [Formula: see text]), there was a significantly larger angle predicted by Surgimap method (53.80 [Formula: see text] 9.79 [Formula: see text]), CAM-HA method (56.61 [Formula: see text] 8.58 [Formula: see text]), and HP-HA method (60.07 [Formula: see text] 13.58 [Formula: see text]), respectively (P [Formula: see text] 0.05). But no significant difference was found between the postoperative osteotomy angle and those of SFA method (51.24 [Formula: see text] 12.14 [Formula: see text]) and FBI method (48.08 [Formula: see text] 12.49 [Formula: see text]) (P [Formula: see text] 0.05).
    Conclusion: For AS patients with thoracolumbar or lumbar kyphosis, the SFA method, FBI method, and Surgimap method can be used to predict the osteotomy angle precisely, however, considering the rationality of parameter settings and the operability, SFA method is relatively more suitable for such population.

    Abstract Undernutrition may change cecal microbiota-epithelium interactions to influence cecal feed fermentation, nutrient absorption and metabolism, and immune function. Sixteen late-gestation Hu-sheep were randomly divided into control (normal feeding) and treatment (feed restriction) groups to establish an undernourished sheep model. Cecal digesta and epithelium were collected to analyze microbiota-host interactions based on 16S rRNA gene and transcriptome sequencing. Results showed that cecal weight and pH were decreased, volatile fatty acids and microbial proteins concentrations were increased, and epithelial morphology was changed upon undernutrition.
