Abstract Rhizobacteria have huge potential for biocontrol activity against many plant pathogens. Isolation and identification are therefore crucial to understand their microbial diversity and ecological importance. The study sought to identify eight yam (Dioscorea sp.) rhizobacterial isolates found to be inhibitory in a previous study to several fungal pathogens, using polyphasic approach (morphological, biochemical, and molecular approaches). Morphological and biochemical characterizations were carried out at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Legon-Accra, Ghana while the Molecular characterization was done at Functional Biosciences Inc., Wisconsin, USA. Morphological and biochemical characters determined were texture, consistency, the morphology of cell growth on nutrient agar, citrate utilization, catalase reaction, Gram reaction, and endospore formation. Molecular identification was achieved through the amplification and sequencing of the 16SrRNA and gyrB regions of the eight rhizobacterial genomic DNA followed by BLAST analysis. Sequencing data were also deposited at GenBank to obtain accession numbers for the rhizobacteria. All the eight bacterial isolates were shown to possess rod-shaped bacilli cells, Gram-positive, and were endospore producers. The amplification of the 16SrRNA and the gyrB regions of the bacterial DNA and subsequent BLAST of these two regions revealed that they were all members of the Bacillus subtilis group at percentage similarity between 99-100%. Four out of the eight isolates were, Bacillus subtilis, three were B. amyloliquefaciens and the last, B. velezensis. Sequence data of both the 16SrRNA and gyrB deposited at the GenBank provided GenBank accession numbers for nucleotide sequence of 16SrRNA as GenBank MT535846-MT535853 and gyrB as GenBank MT908225-MT908232 respectively. This is the first attempt to identify these rhizobacteria, which have huge potential as fungal antagonists of many plant pathogens in Ghana.

Abstract This study set out to explore how euthanasia decision-making for animals was taught to students in eight Australasian veterinary schools. A questionnaire-style interview guide was used by a representative at each university to interview educators. Educators were interviewed about their teaching of euthanasia decision-making for four categories of animals: livestock, equine, companion and avian/wildlife. Using thematic analysis, the terms provided by participants to describe how (mode of teaching) and what (specific content) they taught to students were categorised. Information about content was categorised into human-centred factors that influence decision-making, and animal-based indicators used to directly inform decision-making. All eight representatives reported some teaching relevant to euthanasia decision-making at their university for livestock, companion animal and avian/wildlife. One representative reported no such teaching for equid animals at their university. Observation of a euthanasia case was rarely reported as a teaching method. Five universities reported multiple modes of teaching relevant information, while two universities made use of modalities that could be described as opportunistic teaching (e.g., 'Discussion of clinical cases'). Factors taught at most universities included financial considerations, and that it is the owner's decision to make, while animal-based indicators taught included QoL/animal welfare, prognosis and behaviour change. Overall, most universities used a variety of methods to cover relevant material, usually including lectures and several other approaches for all animal types. However, because two universities relied on presentation of clinical cases, not all students at these veterinary schools will be exposed to make, or assist in making, euthanasia decisions.

Abstract Objective: A bundled hospital payment system that encompasses both acute and post-acute care has been proposed as a means of creating financial incentives in the Medicare fee-for-service system to foster care coordination and to improve the current disorganized system of post care. The objective of this study was to evaluate the statistical stability of alternative designs of a hospital payment system that includes post-acute care services to determine the feasibility of using a combined hospital and post-acute care bundle as a unit of payment.
Methods: The Medicare Severity-Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRGs) were subdivided into clinical subclasses that measured a patient's chronic illness burden to test whether a patient's chronic illness burden had a substantial impact on post-acute care expenditures. Using Medicare data the statistical performance of the MS-DRGs with and without the chronic illness subclasses was evaluated across a wide range of post-acute care windows and combinations of post-acute care service bundles using both submitted charges and Medicare payments.
Results: The statistical performance of the MS-DRGs as measured by R(2) was consistently better when the chronic illness subclasses are included indicating that MS-DRGs by themselves are an inadequate unit of payment for post-acute care payment bundles. In general, R(2) values increased as the post-acute care window length increased and decreased as more services were added to the post-acute care bundle.
Discussion: The study results suggest that it is feasible to develop a payment system that incorporates significant post-acute care services into the MS-DRG inpatient payment bundle. This expansion of the basic DRG payment approach can provide a strong financial incentive for providers to better coordinate care potentially leading to improved efficiency and outcome quality.

Abstract We present two cases of neonates born with symmetric aplasia cutis congenita associated with intrauterine fetal demise of cotwins during the early second trimester. Fetus papyraceus resulting in aplasia cutis congenita is a rare association with many clinical presentations, including extratruncal symmetric lesions and small linear, arcuate, and triangular lesions when twin intrauterine demise occurs after the first trimester.
