Abstract Caspase-9 is traditionally considered the initiator caspase of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. In the past decade, however, other functions beyond initiation/execution of cell death have been described including cell type-dependent regulation of proliferation, differentiation/maturation, mitochondrial, and endosomal/lysosomal homeostasis. As previous studies revealed nonapoptotic functions of caspases in osteogenesis and bone homeostasis, this study was performed to identify proteins and pathways deregulated by knockout of caspase-9 in mouse MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts. Data-independent acquisition-parallel accumulation serial fragmentation (diaPASEF) proteomics was used to compare protein profiles of control and caspase-9 knockout cells. A total of 7669 protein groups were quantified, and 283 upregulated/141 downregulated protein groups were associated with the caspase-9 knockout phenotype. The deregulated proteins were mainly enriched for those associated with cell migration and motility and DNA replication/repair. Altered migration was confirmed in MC3T3-E1 cells with the genetic and pharmacological inhibition of caspase-9. ABHD2, an established regulator of cell migration, was identified as a possible substrate of caspase-9. We conclude that caspase-9 acts as a modulator of osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cell migration and, therefore, may be involved in bone remodeling and fracture repair.

Abstract Abstract: A 41-year-old man was admitted to hospital due to sudden loss of consciousness. A regional brain perfusion SPECT/low-dose CT showed abnormal 99m Tc-HMPAO uptake in the right hemisphere frontotemporally without any other supratentorial or infratentorial radiotracer uptake. A neuropathological examination disclosed a middle cerebral artery aneurysm. Presumably, vessel wall fibrosis prevented collapse. Multiple transmural dissections of the fibrotic aneurysmal wall were the source of the subarachnoid hemorrhage. This interesting image shows that radiotracer accumulation in cerebral artery aneurysms can be a diagnostic pitfall in brain death scintigraphy assessment.

Abstract Aims: To demonstrate changes in distance and near fusional vergence measured with prism bars, while compensating for present heterophoria using current ametropia correction. In addition, to determine the differences in values of the AC/A ratio determined by the heterophoric (calculation) and gradient methods.
Material and methods: The basic sample includes 19 subjects with a mean age of 21.5 ±3.0 years (min. 18, max. 27). We used the Von Graefe technique for examination of distance and near phoria, and prism bars for examination of fusion vergences measured in prism diopters. We divided the basic cohort into six research sets according to the size of distance and near heterophoria. This was a cohort of patients with distance (D OR) and near orthophoria (N OR), a cohort of patients with distance (D EX) and near exophoria (N EX) and a set of patients with distance (D ES) and near esophoria (N ES).
Results: In the case of both groups with exophoria (distance, near) we found a statistically significant result only for negative fusion vergence (NFV). There was a statistically significant increase in NFV in the sample with distance and near exophoria (D EX, p = 0.01 and B EX, p = 0.02, respectively). In our study, we also demonstrated a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) in the values of the AC/A ratio measured by the gradient and heterophoric methods. The values determined by the gradient method are lower (3.0 ±1.1 pD/D versus 5.8 ±0.9 pD/D) than by the heterophoric method.
Conclusion: By comparing fusion vergence values in patients with exophoria and orthophoria, we demonstrated that in the presence of distance or near exophoria there is an increase in ipsilateral fusion vergence. In the case of an increase in ipsilateral fusion vergence, the finding was statistically significant both distance and near (p = 0.01 and p = 0.02, respectively). By contrast, we were unable to prove this fact in the group of patients with esophoria.

Abstract In this study, we propose a promising photoprotective additive that combines the advantages of both organic UV absorbers and inorganic particles without compromising the properties of the paint material. This additive involves the intercalation of a well-known organic UV absorber, 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBISA), into zinc-aluminum layered double hydroxide (ZnAl-LDH). Three ZnAl-LDH intercalates with PBISA were prepared using various methods based on either anion exchange or direct synthesis. The intercalates were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, elemental analysis, and IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies. The composition and basal spacings of all three intercalates are very similar. An effective UV protection film was prepared when the ZnAl-PBISA-1 intercalate was incorporated into polyurethane-acrylate lacquer. The resultant UV protective film exhibited stability and uniform distribution of the intercalated fillers. Some minimal particle sedimentation and aggregation were observed on the cured film's underside, but did not compromise the films' UV protective properties. The prepared lacquers with intercalated fillers offer a viable solution for the surface modification of plastic products.

Abstract Background: Clipping of ophthalmic artery (OA) aneurysms present one of the treatment strategies for long-term disease management. Existing surgical techniques primarily require extra/intradural removal of the anterior clinoid process, carrying a higher risk of infection, damage to surrounding structures or technical complications.
Methods: We present the technique of minimally invasive partial medial clinoidectomy with the unroofing of the optic canal for surgical clipping of OA aneurysms, and besides its pros and cons, we also discuss proper technical indications.
Conclusion: The partial medial clinoidectomy improves manoeuvrability around the paraclinoid region, provides better protection for adjacent structures and renders excellent treatment outcome.

Abstract Introduction: Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is the primary treatment modality for patients with chronic intestinal failure, one of the least common organ failures. This article provides a retrospective analysis of the data collected on HPN patients in the Czech Republic over the past 30 years.
Methods: National registry data was collected using a standardised online form based on the OASIS registry (Oley-A.S.P.E.N. Information System) across all centres providing HPN in the Czech Republic. Data collected prospectively from adult patients in the HPN program was analysed in the following categories: epidemiology, demographics, underlying syndrome, and diagnosis, complications, and teduglutide therapy prevalence.
Results: The registry identified a total of 1,838 adult patient records, reflecting almost 1.5 million individual catheter days. The prevalence of HPN has risen considerably over the last few decades, currently reaching 5.5 per 100,000 population. The majority of patients have short bowel syndrome and GI obstruction, with cancer being the most prevalent underlying disease. Catheter-related bloodstream infections have been the most prevalent acute complication. However, the incidence in 2022 was only 0.15 per 1,000 catheter days. The study also observed an increase in the prevalence of patients on palliative HPN over the last decade.
Conclusion: This study presents a thorough analysis of data from the Czech REDNUP registry. It shows an increasing prevalence of HPN, namely in the palliative patient group. The sharing of national data can improve understanding of this rare condition and facilitate the development of international guidelines.
