Abstract Seventy-four prickly pear samples grown in Mediterranean countries (Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Spain) and 43 prickly pear samples, from 3 different Cypriot varieties (Yellow, Red and Spineless), were characterized and differentiated according to geographical and botanical origin. Prickly pear conventional quality parameters (pH, electrical conductivity, titratable acidity, moisture content, crude fat and protein, total carbohydrates and ash) were determined using official methods of analysis. Colour parameters were determined using HunterLab tristimulus colorimetry and individual sugars using UPLC–MS/MS. Volatile compounds were identified and semi-quantified using solid-phase microextraction in combination with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to analyze the experimental data. Results showed that the combination of physicochemical parameters and volatiles gave a correct differentiation rate of 80.8% according to geographical origin while the combination of physicochemical parameters gave a correct differentiation rate 95.3% according to botanical origin using the cross-validation method.

Abstract Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is still a major cause for concern in many developing countries. It represents a significant morbidity in female urology. Continual wetness, odor, and discomfort cause serious social problems. The diagnosis of the condition has traditionally been based on clinical methods and dye testing. A successful repair of such fistulas requires an accurate diagnostic evaluation and timely repair using procedures that exploit basic surgical principles and the application of interposition flaps. The method of closure depends on the surgeon's training and experience. The main complication of VVF surgery is recurrent fistula formation.

Abstract Lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymphadenectomy have become an important tool for axillary lymph node staging in women with early-stage breast cancer. Many issues such as indications, usefulness, or best method of performing a sentinel node biopsy need to be addressed. Multiple studies now confirm that sentinel lymphadenectomy accurately stages the axilla and is associated with less morbidity than axillary dissection. Blue dye, radiocolloid, or both can be used to identify the sentinel node, and several injection techniques may be used successfully. Many patient factors previously thought to affect accuracy of the procedure have now been shown to be of limited significance. This paper's main purpose is to present the pros and cons of the sentinel lymph node biopsy, and to elucidate all questions regarding to the matter by reviewing the current medical literature.

Abstract Background: Vulvar masses are commonly biopsied in the outpatient setting. They may present as clinically benign masses, but the pathological evaluation and diagnosis is important in establishing the correct management.
Case: A 41-year-old El Salvadoran woman presented with a nontender vulvar mass of over 12 years' duration that had enlarged rapidly over the past 8 months. After surgical excision, the pathologic diagnosis was a rare lipomatous variant of angiomyofibroblastoma.
Conclusion: The lipomatous form of angiomyofibroblastoma is a very rare vulvar tumor, and to our knowledge 8 have been identified and we present the ninth. Although it is benign, there is an aggressive variant of angiomyofibroblastoma that is locally invasive and requires wide local excision to prevent recurrence.

Abstract Acute pancreatitis during pregnancy is a rare event with wide variation in the incidence, ranging from 1:1000 to 1:10000. Pancreatitis in pregnancy presents the same etiological causes as in general population. However, differences are observed in the underlying mechanisms and the prevalence of each cause in the pregnant population. Acute pancreatitis is a complicated in diagnosis and treatment disease with various complications and severe prognosis in general population as well as pregnant women. The severity of acute pancreatitis is probably the most important issue that must be elucidated as early as possible since pancreatitis is an evolving disease. Clinical characteristics of acute pancreatitis in pregnancy do not differ from the non-pregnancy state. The most important disease during the first trimester which should be differentiated from acute pancreatitis is hyperemesis gravidarum. Complications of acute pancreatitis affect differently the mother and the fetus during pregnancy. Management of acute pancreatitis in pregnancy is a controversial issue since the initial treatment is similar to the non-pregnant patient but the subsequent management might differ due to the risk of fetal disturbances or teratogenesis. The initial management of acute pancreatitis is restricted in aggressive intravenous hydration. The interventional treatment of acute pancreatitis in pregnancy can be divided into three subcategories; the operational intervention for the disease itself, the operational intervention for biliary tract cormobidities and the endoscopic intervention. In conclusion, the initial assessment of acute pancreatitis severity and the initial management of the patient are of great importance in order to support the function and avoid failure of main organs.

Abstract Breast cancer continues to be the most common malignancy among women in the United States. Despite its high incidence, early detection and modern treatment have made long-term survival more common. One of the most important sequelae of the treatment of breast cancer is the development of lymphedema. There are many issues for women to deal with after treatment for breast cancer. Focusing on the quality of life after breast cancer means dealing with issues such as an altered body image, changes in relationships with partner and children, living with any ongoing side effects, and the fear of tumor recurrence. The objective of this paper is to elucidate these issues concerning lymphedema.

Abstract Objective: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a rare and particularly aggressive type of thyroid cancer of neuroendocrine origin. It occurs in hereditary and sporadic forms and its aggressiveness is related to the clinical presentation and the type of RET mutation.
Methods: In this article, we present the criteria, as reviewed in contemporary literature, regarding lymph node dissection and radical neck dissection in patients with either sporadic or hereditary MTC.
Results: Early diagnosis and treatment remains the key to a 100% cure rate.
Conclusions: Routine central lymph node dissection is the minimum procedure recommended for all sporadic and hereditary MTCs. Routine lateral lymph node dissection on either side is necessary when lymph node metastases are found in the central neck compartment.
