Abstract The enzymatic browning is one of the main reasons for affecting the quality of medicinal flowers. In the process of chrysanthemum harvesting and processing, improper treatment will lead to the browning and severely impact the appearance and quality of chrysanthemum. Peroxidase enzyme is one of the oxidoreductases that cause enzymatic browning of fresh chrysanthemum. The enzymatic characteristics of peroxidase (POD) in chrysanthemum were studied in this paper. In this experiment, the effects of different reaction substrates and their concentrations, PH value of buffer and reaction temperatures on the activity of POD enzyme were investigated. The results showed that the optimal substrate of POD was guaiacol, and the optimal concentration of POD was 50 mmol·L⁻¹. The optimal pH value and reaction temperature were 4.4 and 30-35 °C, respectively. Michaelis-Menten equation was obtained to express the kinetics of enzyme-catalyzed reaction of POD, Km=0.193 mol·L⁻¹, Vmax=0.329 D·min⁻¹. In addition, the results of POD enzyme thermal stability test showed that the POD enzyme activity was inhibited when being treated at 80 °C for 4 min or at 100 °C for 2 min. The above results were of practical significance to reveal the enzymatic browning mechanism, control the enzymatic browning and improve the quality of chrysanthemum, and can also provide the basis for the harvesting and processing of medicinal materials containing polyphenols.

Abstract: ... countries, traditional medicines are widely used to treat problems with appetite; sip-jeon-dea-bo-tang ...

Abstract Despite its therapeutic advantages, chemotherapy can also cause adverse effects, including anorexia and loss of appetite. Although numerous patients with cancer have been reported to suffer from anorexia during or following chemotherapy, treatment options for anorexia remain to be determined. In Asian countries, traditional medicines are widely used to treat problems with appetite; sip-jeon-dea-bo-tang (SJDBT) is one of those medicines used for the treatment of anorexia. The present study demonstrated that SJDBT ameliorated cisplatin-induced anorexia. In a mouse model of chemotherapy-induced anorexia, oral administration of SJDBT prevented the cisplatin-induced reduction of food intake, inhibiting weight loss. The results of multiplex assays showed that SJDBT only altered the levels of interleukin (IL)-6 and leptin in the serum and fat tissue. In addition, SJDBT maintained the serum leptin level and increased the serum IL-6 level, whereas cisplatin reduced the levels of both serum leptin and IL‑6. Furthermore, SJDBT was revealed to increase the levels of leptin and IL-6 in the fat tissue by activating the JAK1/STAT3 signaling pathway. In conclusion, the present results revealed that SJDBT ameliorated cisplatin-induced anorexia, suggesting its usefulness in the prevention of anorexia during chemotherapy.

Abstract The structure of the title compound, catena-poly[[[di-μ-aqua-μ-fumarato-μ-(boric acid)-disodium]-di-μ-aqua] boric acid monosolvate], contains two crystallographically independent Na(+) cations, each being six-coordinated by one fumarate O atom, one boric acid O atom and four water O atoms in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Adjacent [NaO(2)(OH(2))(4)] units share edges and are linked into chains propagating parallel to [100]. The free boric acid mol-ecules are connected to the chains through strong inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Additional O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the water mol-ecules, the free and coordinated boric acid mol-ecules and the fumarate anion lead to the formation of a three-dimensional supra-molecular structure. With the exception of the two water mol-ecules, all other atoms lie on mirror planes.

Abstract Bo-yang-hwan-o-tang (BHT), an herbal decoction has been mainly used for improvement of blood flow in oriental medicine. Its in vivo immunomodulation was recently demonstrated but the effective mechanisms have not been described. This study was carried out to evaluate in vitro immunomodulatory activity of BHT. Water extract of BHT significantly promoted in vitro proliferative responses of mouse spleen cells (SPC) and also further enhanced the proliferation of SPC stimulated with anti-CD3 antibody. Unexpectedly, addition of BHT extract did not affect proliferation of both resting and CD3-activated T cells, whereas it showed a strong mitogenic activity on B cells. Flow cytometric analysis of CFSE-stained SPC showed that BHT-mediated enhancement of CD3-activated SPC proliferation is due to T cell, but not B cell, division. Mixed culture experiment combining T and mitomycin C-treated B cells demonstrated that BHT-mediated enhancement of CD3-activated T cell proliferation was dependent on the presence of B cells. However, B cell-derived factors were not involved in BHT effect on T cell proliferation. In the presence of B cells, BHT treatment resulted in a great enhancement in IL-2 production of CD3-activated T cells, and BHT effect on T cell proliferation was completely abrogated by addition of exogenous IL-2, indicating that IL-2 plays a critical role in BHT-mediated enhancement of CD3-activated T cell proliferation. Taken together, our data revealed that BHT possesses a potent B cell mitogenic activity and also can enhance activated T cell response through B cell regulation.

Abstract The effects of Li₂O–MgO–B₂O₃ (LMB) frit on the sintering characteristic, phase purity, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of Li₂TiO₃ ceramics were investigated. The results show that a single-phase Li₂TiO₃ is formed and no secondary phase is formed. Addition of LMB frit can lower the sintering temperature of the ceramics by about 400°C without deteriorating the microwave dielectric properties. Typically, the sample with 5wt% LMB frit sintered at 850°C shows good microwave dielectric properties with a permittivity of 21.4, a Q×f value of 64,100GHz, and a temperature coefficient of resonant frequency of 26.9ppm/°C.

Abstract Analytical properties and spectra of naphthyl diphenymethane basic dyes and associated complexes of dye with [AgI2]- was studied. A new method for the spectrophotometric determination of trace amount of silver was developed. The method was based on the Victoria Pure Blue BO reacted with [AgI2]- to form blue associated complex in the buffer medium of H3PO4 -NaH2PO4. The spectrophotometric measurements were directly carried out at 574 nm, the apparent molar absorptivity of associated complex was 7.25 x 10(4) L x mol(-1) x cm(-1). The Beer's law was obeyed in the range of 4-250 microg x L(-1). The recoveries were in the range of 97.0%-98.3%. RSD was 2.7%. The method has been used to determination of trace silver in river water with satisfactory results.
