Abstract Research into the ''future of work'' has become a central concern of scientists, experts and political decision-makers. This special issue addresses this topic and brings together 14 contributions from the fields of business and management. These articles offer new perspectives on the broad scientific landscape surrounding the future of work. The accepted manuscripts are organized into four primary research areas (remote and hybrid work, digital technologies and organizational practices, sustainable human resource management, and the future of organizations, sectors, and labor markets) and six thematic areas (organizational capabilities and culture, organizational performance, individual features, knowledge management, the dark sides of digitalization, and policy implications). The resulting framework serves as the basis for identifying illustrative research questions to guide future research on the future of work.

Abstract The sustainability debate in the food sector has exposed the current food system to critics, encouraging the significant growth of Alternative Food Networks (AFNs), new ways of food production, distribution and consumption that aim to shorten the food chain. Our study is focused on Food Assembly (FA), a special kind of AFN combining the culture of social entrepreneurship and digital innovation to achieve sustainability and a high social impact. The coexistence of a digital platform and a weekly farmers’ market triggers, within this network, mechanisms of knowledge sharing and self-organisation. To date, however, few studies have focused simultaneously on online and on-site interactions within AFNs, especially with quantitative studies. Our paper aims to test the hypothesis that online and on-site knowledge sharing affects the success of a FA measured by customer sustainable behaviour change. To do so, we developed a quantitative analysis based on a regression model. We collected data via a questionnaire submitted to 8497 Italian FA customers, of which 2115 responses were included in our analysis. The results show that online knowledge sharing significantly affects customer change towards more sustainable purchasing and consumption behaviours, while on-site knowledge sharing positively affects sustainable purchasing behaviours.

Abstract Earth's atmosphere, whose ionization stability plays a fundamental role for the evolution and endurance of life, is exposed to the effect of cosmic explosions producing high energy Gamma-ray-bursts. Being able to abruptly increase the atmospheric ionization, they might deplete stratospheric ozone on a global scale. During the last decades, an average of more than one Gamma-ray-burst per day were recorded. Nevertheless, measurable effects on the ionosphere were rarely observed, in any case on its bottom-side (from about 60 km up to about 350 km of altitude). Here, we report evidence of an intense top-side (about 500 km) ionospheric perturbation induced by significant sudden ionospheric disturbance, and a large variation of the ionospheric electric field at 500 km, which are both correlated with the October 9, 2022 Gamma-ray-burst (GRB221009A).

Title translation Rhabdomyolysis and arterial hypertension caused by apparent excess of mineralocorticoids: a case report.
Abstract We report the case of a 61-year-old man who was referred to our Institution because of severe hypokalemia, rhabdomyolysis and high blood pressure. Severe hypokalemia may lead to rhabdomyolysis. The plasma aldosterone concentrations were low and the plasma renin activity was suppressed. A diagnosis of apparent mineralocorticoid excess, attributable to licorice and grapefruit juice ingestion, was made. Glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid, its hydrolytic product, in licorice extracts, and polyphenols, in grapefruit juice, can inhibit 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2, the enzyme that converts cortisol to cortisone. Moreover, having suspended licorice and grapefruit juice ingestion, the plasma K+ levels and blood pressure values progressively and simultaneously returned to normal. We would like to stress the diagnostic weight of a careful history taking.

Abstract A prolonged QT interval is a risk factor for ischemic heart disease in hypertensive subjects. Patients with renal-artery stenosis and primary aldosteronism (PA) are at increased risk of cardiovascular events. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the QT interval in patients with renovascular hypertension (RV) and PA before and after treatment. A total of 24 patients with RV and 38 with PA were studied; 89 patients with essential hypertension (EH) served as control group. Corrected QT intervals (QTcH) were measured from a 12-lead ECG. Basal QTcH was longer in RV (429±30 ms) and PA (423±23 ms) compared with EH controls (407±18 ms; P<0.001). The prevalence of QTcH >440 ms was higher in RV (29%) and PA patients (29%) compared with EH controls (4%; P<0.001). QTcH interval was evaluated after treatment in 19 RV and 15 PA patients. QTcH was reduced after renal-artery angioplasty in RV patients (419±14 ms; P=0.02), and after spironolactone or adrenalectomy in PA (403±12 ms; P=0.01). In conclusion, QT interval was prolonged in patients with RV and PA compared with controls with EH. After angioplasty of renal-artery stenosis in RV, and treatment with spironolactone or adrenalectomy in PA, the cardiovascular risk of such patients may be reduced by concomitant blood pressure lowering and QT duration shortening.

Abstract Background: Aldosterone plays a detrimental role on the cardiovascular system and PA patients display a higher risk of events compared with EH.
Objectives: The objectives of the study were to compare cardio- and cerebrovascular events in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) and matched essential hypertension (EH).
Methods: We retrospectively compared the percentage of patients experiencing events at baseline and during a median follow-up of 12 years in 270 PA patients case-control matched 1:3 with EH patients and in PA subtypes [aldosterone-producing adenoma (n = 57); bilateral adrenal hyperplasia (n = 213)] vs matched EH.
Results: A significantly higher number of PA patients experienced cardiovascular events over the entire period of the study (22.6% vs 12.7%, P < .001). At the diagnosis of PA, a higher number of patients had experienced total events (14.1% vs 8.4% EH, P = .007); furthermore, during the follow-up period, PA patients had a higher rate of events (8.5% vs 4.3% EH, P = .008). In particular, stroke and arrhythmias were more frequent in PA patients. During the follow-up, a higher percentage of PA patients developed type 2 diabetes. Parameters that were independently associated with the occurrence of all events were age, duration of hypertension, systolic blood pressure, presence of diabetes mellitus, and PA diagnosis. After division into PA subtypes, patients with either aldosterone-producing adenoma or bilateral adrenal hyperplasia displayed a higher rate of events compared with the matched EH patients.
Conclusions: This study demonstrates in a large population of patients the pathogenetic role of aldosterone excess in the cardiovascular system and thus the importance of early diagnosis and targeted PA treatment.

Abstract Background: Adrenal vein sampling is considered the gold standard test to identify primary aldosteronism, the most frequent form of secondary hypertension. Technical difficulties with this procedure may be overcome by monitoring cortisol concentrations in the different sampling sites during catheterization.
Methods: We applied a rapid automated cortisol assay performed on a benchtop immunoassay analyzer near the operating suite during the catheterization procedures in 5 hypertensive patients. A mean of 7.8 samples (range, 5-13) were collected from the vena cava as well as from right and left adrenal veins.
Results: Cortisol concentrations measured by the rapid assay and by our routine method were comparable. Two of 5 patients were found to be affected by an aldosterone-producing adenoma and 3 of 5 by a bilateral adrenal hyperplasia. Cortisol determination during the adrenal vein sampling procedure allowed a successful cannulation in all patients, including a patient in whom it was necessary to cannulate 9 different candidate right adrenal veins before finding the correct one.
Conclusions: Intraoperative cortisol assays appeared safe, reproducible, simple to perform, rapid, and cost-effective. The approach represents a service-oriented model for the laboratory and can provide valuable and timely information for improving the success rate of adrenal vein catheterization.

Abstract Introduction: QT interval prolongation increases the risk of sudden death in several medical conditions. Patients with primary aldosteronism and salt-sensitive hypertension experience more cardiovascular events than those with normal-renin essential hypertension. QT interval prolongation might represent one of the risk factors for cardiovascular events in these patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the QT interval in patients with primary aldosteronism and low-renin essential hypertension (LREH).
Methods: Twenty-seven patients with primary aldosteronism, 17 patients with LREH, 117 patients with essential hypertension and 25 healthy individuals were studied. Plasma aldosterone, plasma renin activity, and aldosterone to plasma renin activity ratio (ARR) were determined. Corrected QT intervals (QTcs) were measured from a 12-lead electrocardiogram.
Results: The QTc was longer in primary aldosteronism (434 +/- 23 ms) and LREH (430 +/- 18 ms) compared with essential hypertension (419 +/- 22 ms) and healthy controls (412 +/- 19 ms) (P = 0.0004). The prevalence of QTc longer than 440 ms was higher in primary aldosteronism (48%) and LREH (23%) compared with essential hypertension (11%) and healthy controls (4%) (P < 0.0001). QTc correlated with plasma aldosterone (P = 0.01), ARR (P = 0.02), and diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.01). ARR (P = 0.01) and systolic blood pressure (P = 0.01) were identified as independent predictors of QTc.
Conclusions: We postulate that the elevated aldosterone secretion contributes to the prolongation of the QT interval in patients with primary aldosteronism and LREH through both a depletion of intracellular potassium concentration and higher blood pressure values. QTc measurement might represent one simple, non-invasive and reproducible index to characterize the cardiovascular risk in patients with primary aldosteronism and LREH.
