Title translation Déficit de vitamina D en adolescentes: ¿existe diferencia según el grado de obesidad?
Abstract Objective: To analyze the frequency of vitamin D (VD) deficiency in adolescents with different degrees of obesity and its association with alterations in the metabolic profile.
Patients and method: Cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study in 250 adolescents with different degrees of obesity, treated at the nutrition polyclinic of the Hospital Dr. Sotero del Río. Data on age, sex, weight, height, Tanner stage, 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, basal insulin, and glycemia were collected. The following were used for statistical analysis: Student's test, chi-square, multiple linear regression analysis, and Pearson's correlation coefficient.
Results: 58% of the adolescents presented non-severe obesity and 42% severe obesity, the mean age was 12.4 ± 2.1 years, and 54% were male. 91% of the total sample presented VD deficiency, being more frequent among adolescents with severe obesity, reaching 95%. VD levels were significantly lower in winter. HOMA (homeostatic model assessment) values were higher among patients with severe obesity (6.3/4.2). Low HDL-c was more frequent in adolescents with severe obesity (78%/62%). An inverse correlation was found between VD and triglyceride levels (r = -0.20; p = 0.00) and total cholesterol (r = -0.15; p = 0.03).
Conclusion: The VD deficiency among obese adolescents is worrying, reaching more than 90% of the study sample. Our results highlight the importance of timely prevention, detection, and treatment of VD deficiency in obese adolescents to prevent bone health deterioration and cardiometabolic risk in adulthood.

Abstract Two years after the COVID-19 pandemic started, the world continues to adapt to the profound effects that Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has had on our lives. As the global crisis took hold, many looked to the medical technology/device industry for guidance and solutions. All while the industry itself, was disrupting its own processes and activities. In order to evolve and deliver accelerated innovation the industry had to be agile, resilient and collaborative with the broader healthcare community and technology partners. Now comes a time when we will start to see what changes were temporary and which ones will become part of the new process, but one thing is certain, we will not be going back to where we were pre-pandemic.

Abstract The present work revisits how artificial intelligence, as technology and ideology, is based on the rational choice theory and the techno-liberal discourse, supported by large corporations and investment funds. Those that promote using different algorithmic processes (such as filter bubbles or echo chambers) create homogeneous and polarized spaces that reinforces people's ethical, ideological, and political narratives. These mechanisms validate bubbles of choices as statements of fact and contravene the prerequisites for exercising deliberation in pluralistic societies, such as the distinction between data and values, the affirmation of reasonable dissent, and the relevance of diversity as a condition indispensable for democratic deliberation.

Title translation Food quality in pre-school and school children in Chile during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Abstract Introduction: Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic can affect the quality of food and nutrition of preschoolers and schoolchildren through an increase in food insecurity of families, by measures such as confinement and closure of educational establishments, which affects the daily structure, feeding schedules, and quality of food. Objectives: analyze the overall food quality of preschool and school children in Chile during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: five hundred and fifty-one schoolchildren (22.5 % boys and 77.5 % girls) from five Chilean cities distributed in northern, central, and southern macro zones participated in a convenience sampling. The Global Food Quality Index was applied. The data were analyzed in the IBM SPSSV24 statistical program. Differences in proportions were analyzed employing crossed tables. Results: schoolchildren from rural areas presented lower eating quality than their urban peers (p = .005). Schoolchildren who eat with the whole family had better indicators of eating quality than those who ate alone (p = .002). In nine out of 12 dietary components, evaluated females present higher compliance with dietary recommendations. Conclusions: further research is needed on changes in dietary intake and dietary quality of children and their families during the pandemic. This will allow us to analyze the impact of the pandemic on eating behavior and its possible consequences.

Abstract In recent years, chitosan (CS) has received much attention as a functional biopolymer for various applications, especially in the biomedical field. It is a natural polysaccharide created by the chemical deacetylation of chitin (CT) that is nontoxic, biocompatible, and biodegradable. This natural polymer is difficult to process; however, chemical modification of the CS backbone allows improved use of functional derivatives. CS and its derivatives are used to prepare hydrogels, membranes, scaffolds, fibers, foams, and sponges, primarily for regenerative medicine. Tissue engineering (TE), currently one of the fastest-growing fields in the life sciences, primarily aims to restore or replace lost or damaged organs and tissues using supports that, combined with cells and biomolecules, generate new tissue. In this sense, the growing interest in the application of biomaterials based on CS and some of its derivatives is justifiable. This review aims to summarize the most important recent advances in developing biomaterials based on CS and its derivatives and to study their synthesis, characterization, and applications in the biomedical field, especially in the TE area.

Abstract Testosterone (T), estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), and androgen receptor (AR) play a significant role in the regulation of paternal behavior. We determined the effects of deprivation of paternal care on alterations in paternal behavior, T concentrations in plasma, and the presence of ERα and AR in the medial preoptic area (mPOA), bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), medial amygdala (MeA), and olfactory bulb (OB), as well as the corticosterone (CORT) concentrations in plasma caused by deprivation of paternal care in the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus). Twenty pairs of gerbils were formed; the pups were deprived of paternal care (DPC) in 10 pairs. In another 10 pairs, the pups received paternal care (PC). Ten males raised in DPC condition and 10 males raised in PC conditions were mated with virgin females. When they became fathers, each DPC male and PC male was subjected to tests of paternal behavior on day three postpartum. Blood samples were obtained to quantify T and CORT concentrations, and the brains were removed for ERα and AR immunohistochemistry analyses. DPC males gave less care to their pups than PC males, and they had significantly lower T concentrations and levels of ERα and AR in the mPOA and BNST than PC males. DPC males also had higher CORT concentrations than PC males. These results suggest that in the Mongolian gerbil father's absence causes a decrease in paternal care in the offspring, which is associated with alterations in the neuroendocrine mechanisms that regulate it.
