Abstract Objective To observe the efficacy of Xiao-tan-jie-yu prescription (XTJYF) on sleep quality of the soldiers who acutely exposed to western area of high altitude. Methods In this prospective, completely randomized, parallel, placebo-controlled study, 550 soldiers acutely exposed to western area of high altitude were investigated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), 100 soldiers with sleep disorder were selected and divided into two groups (50 each): treatment group received TCM XTJYF therapy and control group was treated with placebo. After 2 weeks' treatment, PSQI total score and respective factor scores before and after treatment were assessed, and clinical therapeutic efficacy and adverse reactions were observed. Results The PSQI total score and respective factor scores of these soldiers were significantly higher than those of normal adults, but significantly lower than those of insomnia patients, while their sleep disorder factor score was significantly higher compared with insomnia patients. XTJYF reduced the total score and some factor scores (subjective sleep quality, time for initiating sleep, total sleep time, and sleep efficiency) for PSQI in the soldiers with sleep disorder, and the overall response rate was 91.49% which is higher than those in the placebo control group (P<0.05 or 0.01), without toxic side effects. Conclusions The sleep quality of soldiers who acutely exposed to western area of high altitude in China is not high, and XTJYF may safely and effectively improve the sleep quality. Abstract Yu et al.'s paper showed very interesting effects of high nitrogen (N) on the submerged macrophytes Vallisneria natans: active growth in the growing season enabled the macrophytes partly to overcome the ammonium stress. This result was evident in an experiment using ten pond ecosystems; however, their conclusion that shading induced by high phytoplankton biomass together with the toxicity of high ammonium contributed to the decrease of macrophytes growth was not strongly supported by the data provided in the paper. Three factors influencing how submerged macrophytes respond to high ammonium, not addressed by Yu et al.'s paper, are toxicity of ammonium/ammonia (NH

Abstract Rain-source urban rivers have the characteristics of small water capacity, lack of dynamic water supply, and being easily polluted. This study analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of river water quality and the response of characteristic pollutants to rainfall based on daily rainfall data and 21 water quality indicators of nine major river basins in Shenzhen (excluding Shenzhen-Shantou) from 2015 to 2021 by using the single-factor assessment method, comprehensive pollution index method, hierarchical cluster analysis, and Pearson correlation. The results showed that: ① in 2015, the water quality of most sections in the whole region was inferior Class V water. After October 2018, the overall water quality of rivers was greatly improved, which was consistent with the background of Shenzhen's special water control activities in 2018. By 2021, the water quality of approximately 62% of sections reached Class Ⅰ-Ⅲ water standards. ② The water pollution in the densely populated western part of Shenzhen was more serious than that in the eastern part, and the water pollution in the lower reaches of the estuaries and tributaries was more serious than that in the upper reaches. ③ The water quality of the Pingshan River, Guanlan River, Longgang River, and Maozhou River was significantly affected by rainfall. ④ The main characteristic pollution indexes of the Shenzhen River were DO, permanganate index, COD, BOD

Abstract Background: Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the female genital tract are rare.
Aim: To enhance our clinical understanding of neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the ovary.
Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 12 patients diagnosed with NEC of the ovary, analyzing clinicopathological characteristics, treatment modalities, and survival status.
Results: The median age at diagnosis was 34.5 years (range: 20 to 62 years). Among the 12 cases, 9 were small cell carcinoma of the ovary and 3 were large cell NEC. Five cases were stage I tumors, one case was stage IV, and six cases were stage III. Eleven patients underwent surgery as part of their treatment. All patients received adjuvant chemotherapy. Among the 12 patients, one patient received radiotherapy, and one patient with a BRCA2 mutation was administered PARP inhibitor maintenance after chemotherapy. The median progression-free survival was 13 months, and the median overall survival was 19.5 months. Four cases remained disease-free, while eight cases experienced tumor recurrence, including three cases that resulted in death due to disease recurrence.
Conclusion: NEC of the ovary is a rare condition that is more common in women of childbearing age and is associated with aggressive behavior and poor clinical outcomes. Surgical resection remains the mainstay of treatment, with some patients benefiting from adjuvant chemoradiation therapy.

Abstract QR code based visual encryption schemes are still relatively rare, and the existing schemes are mainly implemented by averaging grayscale maps. They become distorted when recovering complex secret images. In this paper, we propose a visual cryptography scheme based on QR codes. We use two adaptive schemes to improve the distortion problem in secret image recovery. The algorithm for generating the QR code shared matrix is improved, and the secret image can be restored quickly. This scheme could ensure the uniform distribution of secret vectors. Meanwhile individual shared QR codes would never reveal any secret information. The proposed algorithm reduces the space consumed by the secret vector and the probability of falling prey to illegal attacks. Compared with other schemes, the secret image recovered via the proposed method is clearer and the scheme is suitable for scenarios in which the secret images are more complex, as it yields better security and practicality.

Abstract Objective: While low-dose lamotrigine has shown effectiveness in managing paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) in pediatric populations, the cognitive consequences of extended use are yet to be fully elucidated. This study seeks to assess the evolution of cognitive functions and the amelioration of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms following a two-year lamotrigine treatment in children.
Methods: This investigation employed an open-label, uncontrolled trial design. Between January 2008 and December 2021, thirty-one participants, ranging in age from 6.5 to 14.1 years, were enrolled upon receiving a new diagnosis of PKD, as defined by the clinical diagnostic criteria set by Bruno in 2004. Comprehensive evaluation of PRRT2 variants and 16p11.2 microdeletion was achieved using whole-exome sequencing (WES) and bioinformatics analysis of copy number variant (CNV) for all subjects. Immediately after diagnosis, participants commenced treatment with low-dose lamotrigine. Cognitive function was assessed using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Chinese Revised (WISC-CR) at baseline and after 2 years, with ADHD diagnoses and symptom severity simultaneously assessed by experts in accordance with the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for ADHD and the ADHD Rating Scale-IV (ADHD-RS-IV).
Results: Initially, twelve out of 31 patients (38.7%) presented with comorbid ADHD. The latency to treatment initiation was notably longer in PKD patients with ADHD (30.75 ± 12.88 months) than in those without ADHD (11.66 ± 9.08 months), t = 4.856, p<0.001. Notably, patients with a latency exceeding 2 years exhibited a heightened risk for comorbid ADHD (OR = 4.671, P=0.015) in comparison to those with shorter latency. Out of the cohort, twenty-five patients saw the clinical trial to its completion. These individuals demonstrated a marked elevation in WISC-CR scores at the 2-year mark relative to the outset across FSIQ (baseline mean: 108.72 ± 10.45 vs 24 months: 110.56 ± 10.03, p=0.001), VIQ (baseline mean: 109.44 ± 11.15 vs 24 months: 110.80 ± 10.44, p=0.028), and PIQ domains (baseline mean: 106.52 ± 9.74 vs 24 months: 108.24 ± 9.38, p=0.012). Concurrently, a substantial mitigation was observed in ADHD inattention at 2 years compared to baseline (p<0.001), with an average total subscale scores decrement from 9.04 ± 4.99 to 6.24 ± 4.05.
Conclusion: Prolonged duration of untreated PKD in children may elevate the risk of ADHD comorbidity. Notably, following a 2-year lamotrigine regimen, enhancements were observed in both cognitive test outcomes and ADHD symptomatology.
