    Abstract Background: Periodontitis affects systemic disease risk, although the relationship thereof in the context of different C-reactive protein (CRP) levels is not clear. This study investigated the association of periodontitis with systemic diseases according to high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) level and sought to identify the risk of systemic diseases in patients with periodontitis.
    Methods: We used data from the seventh (2016-2018) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In a total of 16,489 subjects, the hs-CRP group was classified into the hs-CRP low-risk group and the hs-CRP high-risk group. Propensity score matching (PSM) is used for 1:1 matching of confounding variables (e.g., age, gender, income, and education) between hs-CRP low-risk and hs-CRP at-risk groups to analyze the final 5316 subjects. The association between general characteristics and prevalence of systemic diseases was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi-squared test. The associations between hs-CRP level and systemic and periodontitis were analyzed using logistic regression analyses.
    Results: Within the hs-CRP group, the presence of periodontitis was associated with a significantly increased prevalence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and stroke. In the hs-CRP risk group, periodontitis significantly increased the risk of hypertension and diabetes mellitus by 2.1 and 2.4 times, respectively.
    Conclusions: The presence of periodontitis significantly increases the prevalence of systemic diseases and more so in individuals with higher hs-CRP levels. This indicates the significance of maintaining oral health in reducing the risk of systemic diseases.

    Abstract This study evaluated the effects of the light intensity of curing and the post-curing duration on the mechanical properties and accuracy of the interim dental material. After designing the specimen, 3D printing was performed, and the light intensity was divided into groups G20, G60, G80, and G120 (corresponding to 1.4−1.6, 2.2−3.0, 3.8−4.4, and 6.4−7.0 mW/cm2, respectively), with no post-curing or 5, 10, or 20 min of post-curing being performed. The flexural properties, Vickers microhardness, degree of conversion (DC), and 3D accuracy were then evaluated. The flexural properties and Vickers microhardness showed a sharp increase at the beginning of the post-curing and then tended to increase gradually as the light intensity and post-curing time increased (p < 0.001). On the other hand, there was no significant difference between groups in the accuracy analysis of a 3D-printed three-unit bridge. These results indicate that the light intensity of the post-curing equipment influences the final mechanical properties of 3D-printed resin and that post-curing can be made more efficient by optimizing the light intensity and post-curing time.

    Abstract Facial massages are frequently performed to achieve a feeling of freshness, rejuvenation, skin tightening, and delayed onset of wrinkles. However, vigorous massages can induce unexpected symptoms. Here, we present a case of a woman who complained of an asymmetric facial appearance and a mass-like lesion following a long-term facial massage intervention. A facelift incision was performed. Platysma muscle rupture was observed intraoperatively, which was then repaired. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a vigorous facial massage-induced ipsilateral platysma rupture.

    Abstract This study examined cultural differences in advance care planning (ACP) and various strategies that social workers use to initiate conversations on ACP. We conducted qualitative interviews with 12 social workers in South Korea and the US and a thematic content analysis of the transcribed data. Our findings show that different cultural norms and generational viewpoints surrounding death and health-related decision-making influence how people prepare for end-of-life care (EOLC). Whereas principles of self-determination and autonomy guide ACP practices in the US, decisions regarding EOLC are more often made in consultation with family members in Korean and Korean-American communities. Nevertheless, social workers in both countries identified relationship-building, empowerment, and individualized approaches as common strategies in initiating discussions on ACP.

    Abstract Objectives: This study evaluated the repairability of three-dimensional printed (3DP) denture bases based on different conventional relining materials and aging.
    Material and methods: The groups for surface characterization (surface-roughness and contact-angle measurements) were divided based on the denture base and surface treatment. Shear bond strength test and failure-mode analysis were conducted by a combination of three variables: denture base, relining materials, and hydrothermal aging (HA). The initial characterization involved quantifying the surface roughness (n = 10) and contact angle (n = 10) of denture base specimens with and without sandblasting (SB) treatment. Four relining materials (Kooliner [K], Vertex Self-Curing [V], Tokuyama Rebase II (Normal) [T], and Ufi Gel Hard [U]) were applied to 3DP, heat-cured (HC), and self-cured (SC) denture-base resin specimens. Shear bond strength (n = 15) and failure-mode analyses (n = 15) were performed before and after HA, along with evaluations of the fractured surfaces (n = 4). Statistical analyses were performed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for surface characterization, and a three-way ANOVA was conducted for shear bond strength.
    Results: The surface roughness peaked in HC groups and increased after SB. The 3DP group displayed significantly lower contact angles, which increased after treatment, similar to the surface roughness. The shear bond strength was significantly lower for 3DP and HC denture bases than for SC denture bases, and peaked for U at 10.65 ± 1.88 MPa (mean ± SD). HA decreased the shear bond strength relative to untreated samples. Furthermore, 3DP, HC, and SC mainly showed mixed or cohesive failures with V, T, and U. K, on the other hand, trended toward adhesive failures when bonded with HC and SC.
    Conclusion: This study has validated the repairability of 3DP dentures through relining them with common materials used in clinical practice. The repairability of the 3DP denture base was on par with that of conventional materials, but it decreased after aging. Notably, U, which had a postadhesive application, proved to be the most effective material for repairing 3DP dentures.

    Abstract Introduction: Serum activin A has been reported to contribute to vascular calcification and kidney fibrosis in chronic kidney disease. We aimed to investigate whether higher serum activin levels were associated with poor allograft outcomes in patients with kidney transplantation (KT).
    Methods: A total of 860 KT patients from KNOW-KT (Korean Cohort Study for Outcome in Patients with Kidney Transplantation) were analyzed. We measured serum activin levels pre-KT and 1 year after KT. The primary outcome was the composite of a ≥50% decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate and graft failure. Multivariable cause-specific hazard model was used to analyze association of 1-year activin levels with the primary outcome. The secondary outcome was coronary artery calcification score (CACS) at 5 years after KT.
    Results: During the median follow-up of 6.7 years, the primary outcome occurred in 109 (12.7%) patients. The serum activin levels at 1 year were significantly lower than those at pre-KT (488.2 ± 247.3 vs. 704.0 ± 349.6). When patients were grouped based on the median activin level at 1 year, the high-activin group had a 1.91-fold higher risk (95% CI, 1.25-2.91) for the primary outcome compared to the low-activin group. A one-standard deviation increase in activin levels as a continuous variable was associated with a 1.36-fold higher risk (95% CI, 1.16-1.60) for the primary outcome. Moreover, high activin levels were significantly associated with 1.56-fold higher CACS (95% CI, 1.12-2.18).
    Conclusion: Post-transplant activin levels were independently associated with allograft functions as well as coronary artery calcification in KT patients.

    Abstract Species-based approaches to the analysis of changes in successional community assemblages are limited in the ability to reflect long-term evolutionary and functional trait responses of organisms to environment change. Recent advances in concepts and analyses of community phylogenetics and functional traits have improved the interpretation and understanding of community assembly processes. Here, we examined phylogenetic signals of four functional traits such as maximum height, leaf size, seed mass and wood density in woody plant species and temporal changes in species, phylogenetic, and functional diversity among forest strata (i.e., whole, overstory, and understory strata) at four forest long term ecological research sites in South Korea.
