Abstract Forest biomass is an important variable for calculating carbon stocks and greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest fires in Brazilian Amazonia. Its spatial distribution has caused controversy due to disagreements over the application of different calculation methodologies. Standardized networks of forest surveys provide an alternative to solve this problem. This study models the spatial distribution and original total stock of forest biomass (Aboveground+Belowground+Fine and coarse litter) in Brazil’s state of Roraima, taking advantage of data from georeferenced forest surveys in the region. Commercial volume (bole volume) from surveys was expanded to total biomass. Kriging techniques were used to model the spatial distribution of biomass stocks and generate a benchmark map. All results were associated with phytophysiognomic groups, climatic regions and land uses (protected areas; agricultural use). We estimate forest in the state of Roraima to have an original biomass stock of 6.32×109Mg. Forest biomasses in areas with shorter dry seasons were higher as compared to forests in regions with longer dry seasons. The original vegetation in protected areas, independent of phytophysiognomic group, has higher biomass compared to areas currently under agricultural use. Protected areas support 65.8% of Roraima’s stock of forest biomass, indicating an important potential role in REDD projects for conservation of forest carbon. Information on spatial distribution of biomass stocks at a more refined scale is needed to reduce uncertainties about the regional character of carbon pools in Amazonia.

Abstract Reconstruction of Highway BR-319 (Manaus-Porto Velho) would allow for access from the “arc of deforestation” in the southern part of Brazil’s Amazon region to vast blocks of forests in central and northern Amazonia. Building roads is known to be a major driver of deforestation, allowing entry of squatters, and other actors. Rather than deforestation along the highway route, here we consider the road’s potential for stimulating deforestation in a separate location, approximately 550 km north of BR-319’s endpoint in Manaus. Reconstructing BR-319 has great potential impact to start a new wave of migration to this remote region. The southern portion of the state of Roraima, the focus of our study, is already connected to Manaus by Highway BR-174. We modeled deforestation in southern Roraima and simulated carbon emissions between 2007 and 2030 under four scenarios. Simulations used the AGROECO model in DINAMICA-EGO © software. Two scenarios were considered with reconstruction of BR-319 and two without this road connection. For each of the two possibilities regarding BR-319, simulations were developed for (1) a “conservation” (CONSERV) scenario that assumes the creation of a series of protected areas, and (2) a “business-as-usual” (BAU) scenario that assumes no additional protected areas. Results show that by 2030, with BR-319 rebuilt, deforestation carbon emissions would increase between 19 % (CONSERV) and 42 % (BAU) over and above those corresponding to no-road scenarios.

The crisis in the cultural sector generated by the Covid-19 pandemic gives evidence to some strong limitations that have affected the sector for years: fragmentation among the main cultural players; focus mostly on the major cultural and touristic attractors (not on their surroundings) as far as investments are concerned and, consequently, large numbers of tourists as first aim and international digital biggest players to depend upon; delay in the carrying out of innovative projects where technology dominates regardless of social purposes. All these elements clearly show sector’s weakness and its predictable unsustainability in the future. We face a crucial choice: if we are able to assume a new systemic paradigm in line with the European one, we will be able to provide the cultural sector with new generative impulses, otherwise there will be no conditions for an economic, social and cultural new start. For the sector by itself, but also for territories and communities. In order to address rightly, first of all we have to abandon the sectoral (and bordering) vision of the cultural enterprise. It will be also necessary to implement structural reforms that provide enabling settings and limit bureaucracy; activate smart partnerships able to engage public and private actors on the implementation of territorial integrated strategies, sharing responsibilities and tasks; invest on either technological innovation or human capital, training the new generations on all those hybrid skills required, so that, after the emergency, cultural work can finally gain in respect and dignity. If we succeed, we will have put the bases for a key-revolution that will definitely allow future generations to live by working in the cultural sector.

Abstract Physical inactivity and sedentary habits are among the major risk factors for decreased physical and mental well-being. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, normal daily routines changed, including physical activity (PA) habits. The aim of this manuscript is to review the literature according to the PRISMA guidelines in order to analyze the changes in PA and exercise practice after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the well-being of adolescents. A PubMed search was performed using the keywords "Exercise" [Mesh]) AND "COVID-19" [Mesh], and filters to limit the research to pertain to adolescents (13-18 years) and English reports. Out of the search, 15 reports met the criteria for inclusion in the study. The main findings outlined a global decrease in PA levels associated with decreased well-being levels, modified eating habits and leisure time activity, and increased obesity, anxiety, and depression among adolescents. PA is a significant health determinant and should be improved through the awareness of the benefits of regular PA and of the risks of sedentary behavior, as well as through support from family, friends, and teachers. Providing PA at school, as a part of the academic program, increasing the availability of equipment and facilities, and promoting at-home PA options are suggested as support for increasing PA in all countries and settings.

Abstract Disordered photonic structures are promising for the realization of physical unclonable functions-physical objects that can overcome the limitations of conventional digital security and can enable cryptographic protocols immune against attacks by future quantum computers. The physical configuration of traditional physical unclonable functions is either fixed or can only be permanently modified, allowing one token per device and limiting their practicality. Here we overcome this limitation by creating reconfigurable structures made by light-transformable polymers in which the physical structure of the unclonable function can be reconfigured reversibly. Our approach allows the simultaneous coexistence of multiple physical unclonable functions within one device. The physical transformation is done all-optically in a reversible and spatially controlled fashion, allowing the generation of more complex keys. At the same time, as a set of switchable individual physical unclonable functions, it enables the authentication of multiple clients and allows for the practical implementations of quantum secure authentication and nonlinear generators of cryptographic keys.
